Abstract

A first and/or a second communications system may provide communications service over a geographic area. A method of operating the first and/or the second communications systems may include generating a measure of aggregate interference reaching a satellite of the second communications system substantially from devices of the first communications system. The measure of aggregate interference reaching the satellite of the second communications system may be transmitted to an element of the first communications system.

59. A method of operating first and second radioterminal communications systems including respective first and second elements providing communications service to a plurality of radioterminals over a geographic area, the method comprising:

providing communications between a radioterminal and the second element of the second radioterminal communications system;

generating a measure of interference from the first radioterminal communications system including the first element to the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system including the second element, wherein the first radioterminal communications system is a source of the interference to the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system;

transmitting the measure of interference to an element of the second radioterminal communications system via the second element; and

transmitting the measure of interference from the second radioterminal communications system including the second element to the first radioterminal communications system including the first element.

60. A method according to claim 59 wherein the measure of interference comprises a bit error rate.

61. A method according to claim 59 further comprising:

increasing a power of transmission from an element of the second radioterminal communications system to the radioterminal when the measure of interference exceeds a threshold.

62. A method according to claim 59 further comprising:

changing a frequency for communications between the radioterminal and an element of the second radioterminal communications system when the measure of interference exceeds a threshold.

63. A method according to claim 59 wherein the first and second radioterminal communications systems are operated by different entities.

64. A method according to claim 59 wherein the first and second radioterminal communications systems are operated by a same entity.

65. A method according to claim 59 wherein the second radioterminal communications system comprises at least one element and wherein the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system is configured to communicate with the at least one element of the second radioterminal communications system.

A method according to claim 59 wherein the first radioterminal communications system comprises at least one element and/or at least one terrestrial component, wherein the at least one element and/or the at least one terrestrial component of the first radioterminal communications system is/are configured to communicate with at least one radioterminal.

67. A method according to claim 59 wherein the first and second radioterminal communications systems are both configured for communication using L band and/or S band frequencies.

68. A method according to claim 59 wherein transmitting the measure of interference from the second radioterminal communications system including the second element to the first radioterminal communications system including the first element comprises transmitting the measure of interference via ground based infrastructure.

69. A method according to claim 68 wherein the measure of interference from the first radioterminal communications system to the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system comprises a measure of interference from the first element of the first radioterminal communications system and/or from a terrestrial infrastructure component of the first radioterminal communications system.

A method according to claim 68 wherein transmitting the measure of interference comprises transmitting the measure of interference via an element gateway of the second radioterminal communications system, via the ground based infrastructure, and via an element gateway of the first radioterminal communications system.

71. A method according to claim 59 wherein the radioterminal comprises a mobile radioterminal.

72. A method according to claim 59 wherein transmitting the measure of interference to an element of the second radioterminal communications system via the second element comprises transmitting the measure of interference to a ground based element of the second radioterminal communications system.

73. A method of operating first and second radioterminal communications systems including respective first and second elements providing communications service to a plurality of radioterminals over a geographic area, the method comprising:

providing communications between a radioterminal and the second element of the second radioterminal communications system;

generating a measure of interference from the first radioterminal communications system including the first element to the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system including the second element, wherein the first radioterminal communications system is a source of the interference to the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system; and

transmitting the measure of interference to a ground based element of the second radioterminal communications system via the second element.

74. A method according to claim 73 wherein the measure of interference comprises a bit error rate.

75. A method according to claim 73 further comprising:

increasing a power of transmission from an element of the second radioterminal communications system to the radioterminal when the measure of interference exceeds a threshold.

76. A method according to claim 73 further comprising:

changing a frequency for communications between the radioterminal and an element of the second radioterminal communications system when the measure of interference exceeds a threshold.

77. A method according to claim 73 wherein the first and second radioterminal communications systems are operated by different entities.

78. A method according to claim 73 wherein the first and second radioterminal communications systems are operated by a same entity.

79. A method according to claim 73 wherein the second radioterminal communications system comprises at least one element and wherein the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system is configured to communicate with the at least one element of the second radioterminal communications system.

A method according to claim 73 wherein the first radioterminal communications system comprises at least one element and/or at least one terrestrial component, wherein the at least one element and/or the at least one terrestrial component of the first radioterminal communications system is/are configured to communicate with at least one radioterminal.

81. A method according to claim 73 wherein the first and second radioterminal communications systems are both configured for communication using L band and/or S band frequencies.

82. A method according to claim 73 further comprising:

transmitting the measure of interference from the second radioterminal communications system including the second element to the first radioterminal communications system including the first element.

A method according to claim 82 wherein transmitting the measure of interference from the second radioterminal communications system including the second element to the first radioterminal communications system including the first element comprises transmitting the measure of interference via ground based infrastructure.

84. A method according to claim 83 wherein the measure of interference from the first radioterminal communications system to the radioterminal of the second radioterminal communications system comprises a measure of interference from the first element of the first radioterminal communications system and/or from a terrestrial infrastructure component of the first radioterminal communications system.

A method according to claim 83 wherein transmitting the measure of interference comprises transmitting the measure of interference via an element gateway of the second radioterminal communications system, via the ground based infrastructure, and via an element gateway of the first radioterminal communications system.

86. A method according to claim 73 wherein the radioterminal comprises a mobile radioterminal.
