Abstract

The described principles provide a method and system for enabling a telematic operator to determine that an outbound call has been placed to a non-telematic mobile directory number by the telematic operator in error. In one aspect, the invention allows the telematic operator to create an identification of all non-telematic MDN'"'"'s stored by the wireless carrier which the telematic operator continues to believe are active and are associated with a pending transaction. Improved synchronization of records between the wireless carrier and telematic operator is provided to minimize incidents involving transactional differences between MDN values stored by the wireless carrier and telematic operator when an assigned MDN is processed in error between the two entities. The use of unique modem telephone numbers by the telematic operator allows identification of the affected MDN (by the telematic operator) while providing the customer data privacy needed for the wireless carrier.

Claims

1. A method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset comprising:

identifying a telematics unit to which a call is to be placed from the telematic operator;

identifying a first MDN associated with the telematics unit at the telematic operator;

dialing first MDN from the telematic operator via a first modem, wherein the dialed call is directed from the modem through a wireless provider;

determining at the wireless provider that the first modem is associated with the telematic operator, and in response to determining at the wireless provider that the first modem is associated with the telematic operator, identifying one or more ESNs recorded with the wireless provider as being associated with the first MDN; and

returning an identification of the one or more ESNs to the telematic operator.

The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 1, wherein the first modem is one of a plurality of modems in a modem bank, and wherein determining at the wireless provider that the first modem is associated with the telematic operator comprises determining that the first modem is within the modem bank.

The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 1, wherein determining at the wireless provider that the first modem is associated with the telematic operator comprises recognizing a CPN associated with the call as belonging to a modem of the telematic operator.

The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 1, wherein dialing the first MDN from the telematic operator via a first modem, wherein the dialed call is directed from the modem through a wireless provider, further comprises transmitting an ESN associated with the telematics unit to the wireless provider.

5. The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 4, wherein the ESN associated with the telematics unit is distinct from each of the one or more ESNs recorded with the wireless provider as being associated with the first MDN.

6. The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 5, further comprising the telematic operator disassociating the first MDN from the telematics unit and associating a second MDN with the telematics unit.

The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 5, further comprising the telematic operator, in response to receiving the identification of the one or more ESNs, converting each of the one or more ESNs to corresponding MDNs, STIDs, and YIN values.

8. The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 7, further comprising identifying based on the corresponding MDNs, STIDs, and VIN values one or more telematics devices that have been assigned new respective MDNs.

9. The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 8, further comprising correcting records associated with a transaction processing system of the telematic operator.

10. The method of identifying a mistaken call from a telematic operator to a handset according to claim 9, wherein correcting records associated with the transaction processing system of the telematic operator comprises modifying an MDN associated with the dialed call.

11. A method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider, the method comprising:

receiving at the wireless operator from a calling party a dialing of an MDN, wherein the dialing of the MDN further includes an associated ESN;

determining that the MDN and ESN are not associated in records of the wireless operator;

identifying the calling party as the telematic operator; and

in response to determining that the MDN and ESN are not associated in records of the wireless operator and that the calling party is the telematic operator, generating a listing of one or more ESNs recorded with the wireless provider as being associated with the MDN and returning the generated listing to the telematic operator.

The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 11, wherein identifying the calling party as the telematic operator comprises determining that the call originated from a modem associated with the telematic operator.

13. The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 11, wherein the originating modem is one of a plurality of modems in a modem bank.

The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 11, wherein determining that the call originated from a modem associated with the telematic operator comprises recognizing a CPN associated with the call as belonging to a modem of the telematic operator.

15. The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 11, further comprising the telematic operator disassociating the first MDN from the telematics unit and associating a second MDN with the telematics unit.

The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 11, further comprising the telematic operator, in response to receiving the identification of the one or more ESNs, converting each of the one or more ESNs to corresponding MDNs, STIDs, and VIN values.

The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 16, further comprising identifying based on the corresponding MDNs, STIDs, and VIN values one or more telematics devices that have been assigned new respective MDNs.

18. The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 17, further comprising correcting records associated with a transaction processing system of the telematic operator.

19. The method of identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider according to claim 18, wherein correcting records associated with the transaction processing system of the telematic operator comprises modifying an MDN associated with the dialed call.

20. A computer-readable medium having thereon computer-executable instructions for identifying an inconsistency between records of a telematic operator and records of a wireless provider, the computer-executable instructions comprising:

instructions for receiving at the wireless operator from a calling party a dialing of an MDN, wherein the dialing of the MDN further includes an associated ESN;

instructions for determining that the MDN and ESN are not associated in records of the wireless operator;

instructions for identifying the calling party as the telematic operator;

instructions for generating a listing of one or more ESNs recorded with the wireless provider as being associated with the MDN in response to determining that the MDN and ESN are not associated in records of the wireless operator and that the calling party is the telematic operator; and

instructions for returning the generated listing to the telematic operator.
