Abstract

Infusion sets for insertion into an insertion site for preventing misalignment of the base and cap or fluid connector by providing one or more alignment features between each, and in alternative embodiments, provide one or more features to secure the cap or fluid connector to the base in anyone of a number of rotational positions and having release features to allow the cap or fluid connector to be rotatable with respect to the base portion of the infusion set, and yet easily removed and inserted. Further embodiments provide infusion sets wherein the user can easily see the insertion site of the catheter and the skin, to determine if infections have occurred at an earlier stage than was possible using prior art infusion sets and with substantially less difficulty.

Claims

1. An infusion set connecting apparatus, for an infusion set comprising at least one of a cap and a base, wherein the cap is configured to be rotatable about the base so an extension tube can be rotated to a desired orientation, comprising:

a cap having a deflectable coupling member; and

a base having a post with at least one shouldered surface,

wherein the deflectable coupling member is configured to releasably couple the cap to the base in a desired rotational position about the post.

2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the post comprises an inclined upper surface configured to align with and receive the deflectable coupling member of the cap.

3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the cap comprises an opening upon a lower surface having an inclined surface surrounding the opening and configured to align with and receive the post of the base.

An apparatus as claimed in claim 2, wherein the deflectable coupling member of the cap comprises an inclined lower surface configured to be displaced by engagement with the inclined upper surface of the post, and upon release by the inclined upper surface of the post, engage the shouldered surface of the post in any one of a 360 degree rotational position about the post.

5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the post comprises a plurality of ribs upon an outer circumference.

6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 5, wherein the deflectable coupling member of the cap comprises a plurality of ribs upon an inner circumference configured to engage the plurality of ribs upon the outer circumference of the post.

7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 6, wherein the deflectable coupling member of the cap is configured to deflect between,

at least one position wherein the deflectable coupling member of the cap releases the post of the base,

at least one position wherein the deflectable coupling member of the cap engages the shouldered surface of the post to secure the base and cap together while permitting rotation, and

at least one position wherein the deflectable coupling member of the cap engages the shouldered surface of the post to secure the base and cap together and engage the plurality of ribs of the deflectable coupling member with the plurality of ribs upon the post to resist rotation.

8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising an insertion needle comprising at least one opening adjacent to an input of the infusion set to prime the set.

9. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, further comprising:

at least one septum; and

at least one septum securing wedge to secure the at least one septum to the base.

10. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1, wherein the base comprises at least one window for viewing an insertion site beneath the base.

11. An infusion set connecting apparatus, for an infusion set comprising at least one of a cap and a base, wherein the cap is configured to be rotatable about the base once the two are attached together so an extension tube can be rotated to a desired orientation, comprising:

a cap having a rotatable coupling member and an alignment opening; and

a base having a post configured to slidably engage the alignment opening of the cap,

wherein the rotatable coupling member is configured to rotate the cap relative to the base.

12. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11, further comprising an infusion set tube extending from the rotatable coupling member parallel to the base.

13. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11, further comprising an infusion set tube extending from the cap perpendicular to the base.

14. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein the base comprises at least one mechanism to secure the cap at a point opposite to the rotatable coupling member.

15. An apparatus as claimed in claim 11, wherein the base comprises at least one window for viewing an insertion site beneath the base.

16. A cap for an infusion set, wherein the cap is configured to be rotatable about a base once the two are attached together so an extension tube can be rotated to a desired orientation, comprising:

a member configured to substantially encircle a post of an infusion set base, having,

at least one user deflectable side,

at least one side configured to deflect in response to movement of the user deflectable side, and

at least one projection disposed upon an inner surface of the side configured to deflect in response to movement of the user deflectable side such that the projection engages and disengages the post of the infusion set base in response to movement of the user deflectable side.

17. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 16, wherein at least one side further comprises a relief to target and ease bending of the member.

18. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 16, wherein the user deflectable side comprises a top surface of the cap.

19. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 16, further comprising at least one member extending from said top surface.

20. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 16, further comprising at least one side comprising an inclined surface to engage and displace outwardly the at least one side configured to deflect in response to movement of the user deflectable side.

21. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 16, wherein the member further comprises:

the least one user accessible side configured to slidably move relative to the post; and

at least one opposite side configured to slidably move with the user accessible side and engage a shoulder of the post in a first slidable position and release the shoulder of the post in a second slidable position.

22. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 21, further comprising a spring member to urge the second member into the first slidable position.

23. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 16, wherein the user deflectable side comprises:

at least a first and second arm configured to bisect a portion of the post of the infusion set base, wherein the first and second arm are configured to rotate about a pivot point and engage a shoulder of the post in a first rotatable position and release the shoulder of the post in a second rotatable position.

24. A cap for an infusion set as claimed in claim 23, further comprising a spring member to urge the first and second arms into the first rotatable position.

25. An infusion set connecting apparatus, for an infusion set comprising at least one of a cap and a base, wherein the cap is configured to be rotatable about the base once the two are attached together so an extension tube can be rotated to a desired orientation, comprising:

a cap having a deflectable coupling member; and

a base comprising at least one cap retaining wall with at least one shouldered surface,

wherein the deflectable coupling member is configured to releasably couple the cap to the base in a desired rotational position.

26. An apparatus as claimed in claim 25, wherein the deflectable coupling member comprises at least one projection to deflect in response to movement of the deflectable coupling member such that the projection engages and disengages the shouldered surface of the cap retaining wall.
