Abstract

Sensing a force and/or a change of motion proximate to a person'"'"'s head via one or more sensing elements (e.g., a pressure sensor, an accelerometer) disposed on a flexible substrate having a sufficient mechanical coupling to the person'"'"'s head. The conformality of the sensing element facilitates intimate proximity to the surface of the person'"'"'s head to ensure accurate sensing. A processor receiving one or more signals from the sensing element may provide information relating to possible injury to a body part (e.g., head trauma) resulting from sensed forces and/or changes in motion. Such information may be conveyed by one or more output devices that provide indications of possible degrees of injury/trauma. A conformal sensing apparatus may be integrated with a protective garment or accessory, such as a helmet, wherein the conformality of the sensing apparatus also ensures sufficient comfort for the wearer.

Claims

1. An apparatus for sensing a force and/or a change in motion proximate to a person'"'"'s head and providing information relating to possible head trauma of the person, the apparatus comprising:

a flexible substrate to substantially conform to a surface of the person'"'"'s head so as to facilitate comfortable and safe intimate proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head;

at least one sensing element disposed on the flexible substrate to sense the force and/or the change in motion proximate to the person'"'"'s head and provide at least one output signal representing the sensed force and/or change in motion; and

a processor communicatively coupled to the at least one sensing element to receive the at least one output signal and provide information relating to the possible head trauma of the person based at least in part on the at least one output signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to compare the sensed force and/or the change in motion represented by the at least one output signal to at least one trigger value to provide the information relating to the possible head trauma.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to identify a significant blast event based at least in part on the at least one trigger value.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the processor is configured to determine a blast exposure of the person based at least in part on the at least one trigger value.

5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein:

the at least one sensing element senses at least the force;

the at least one output signal represents the sensed force; and

the at least one trigger value is 40 pounds/square inch (PSI).

6. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein:

the at least one sensing element senses at least the change in motion;

the change in motion includes an acceleration;

the at least one output signal represents the sensed acceleration; and

the at least one trigger value is 25 g.

7. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising a memory communicatively coupled to the processor.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the at least one trigger value is stored in the memory.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising at least one communication interface communicatively coupled to the processor, wherein the at least one communication interface includes a programming port to receive the at least one trigger value.

10. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the processor controls the memory such that the information relating to the possible head trauma constitutes at least a portion of data stored in the memory.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the processor controls the memory so as to log and maintain in the memory the information relating to the possible head trauma if the sensed force and/or the change in motion represented by the at least one output signal exceeds the at least one trigger value.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the processor logs the information into the memory for a predetermined time period after the sensed force and/or change in motion exceeds the at least one trigger value.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the at least one sensing element senses at least the change in motion;

the change in motion includes an acceleration;

the at least one output signal represents the sensed acceleration; and

the processor determines the information relating to the possible head trauma based at least in part on an acceleration curve associated with the at least one output signal.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the processor analyzes the acceleration curve based at least in part on an automotive algorithm so as to determine the information relating to the possible head trauma.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a communication interface communicatively coupled to at least the processor to upload the information relating to the possible head trauma to an external device.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one light source coupled to the processor to provide at least one visual cue representing the information relating to the possible head trauma.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the at least one light source includes a plurality of LEDs having different colors respectively corresponding to a degree of the possible head trauma.

18. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a coupling mechanism to mechanically couple the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head.

19. A helmet to be worn on the person'"'"'s head, the helmet comprising:

the apparatus of claim 18,

wherein the helmet constitutes at least a portion of the coupling mechanism.

20. A method, comprising:

A) sensing a force and/or a change of motion proximate to a person'"'"'s head via at least one sensing element disposed on a flexible substrate having a sufficient mechanical coupling to the person'"'"'s head; and

B) electronically providing information relating to possible head trauma of the person based at least in part on A).

21. The method of claim 20, wherein B) comprises:

B1) comparing the sensed force and/or the sensed change in motion from A) to at least one trigger value; and

B2) providing the information relating to possible head trauma of the person based on B1).

22. The method of claim 21, wherein B) further comprises:

identifying a significant blast event based at least in part on B1).

23. The method of claim 21, wherein B) further comprises:

determining a blast exposure of the person based at least in part on B1).

24. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

C) logging and maintaining in memory the information relating to the possible head trauma if, in B1), the sensed force and/or the change in motion exceeds the at least one trigger value.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein C) comprises:

logging the information into the memory for a predetermined time period after the sensed force and/or change in motion exceeds the at least one trigger value.

26. The method of claim 20, wherein:

the at least one sensing element senses at least the change in motion;

the change in motion includes an acceleration; and

B) comprises;

determining the information relating to the possible head trauma based at least in part on an acceleration curve associated with the acceleration.

27. The method of claim 26, further comprising:

analyzing the acceleration curve based at least in part on an automotive algorithm so as to determine the information relating to the possible head trauma.

28. The method of claim 20, wherein B) comprises:

uploading the information relating to the possible head trauma to an external device.

29. The method of claim 20, wherein B) comprises:

B1) providing at least one visual cue representing the possible head trauma.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein B1) comprises:

providing the at least one visual cue as a plurality visual color light cues, wherein different color light cures of the plurality of visual color light cues respectively correspond to a degree of the possible head trauma.

31. A system, comprising:

an apparatus for sensing an acceleration proximate to a person'"'"'s head and providing information relating to possible head trauma of the person, the apparatus comprising;

a flexible substrate to substantially conform to a surface of the person'"'"'s head so as to facilitate comfortable and safe intimate proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head;

at least one accelerometer disposed on the flexible substrate to sense the acceleration proximate to the person'"'"'s head and provide at least one output signal representing the sensed acceleration; and

a processor communicatively coupled to the at least one accelerometer to receive the at least one output signal and provide information relating to the possible head trauma of the person based at least in part on an acceleration curve associated with the at least one output signal; and

at least one light source coupled to the processor to provide at least one visual cue representing the information relating to the possible head trauma, wherein the at least one light source includes a plurality of LEDs having different colors respectively corresponding to a degree of the possible head trauma.
