Abstract

A system and method for providing energy demand management. The system and method may comprise at least one network element communicatively coupled to at least one equipment, wherein the at least one equipment consumes energy or generates energy. The system and method may also comprise a master control unit communicatively coupled to the at least one network element, wherein the master control unit is configured to monitor and manage energy use at the at least one equipment via the at least one network element. The system and method may also comprise a server communicatively coupled to the master control unit over a network, wherein the server is configured to process a variety of information useful for the master control unit.

Claims

1. A system for providing automated energy demand management, comprising:

at least one network element communicatively coupled to at least one equipment, wherein the at least one equipment consumes energy or generates energy;

a master control unit communicatively coupled to the at least one network element, wherein the master control unit is configured to monitor and manage energy use at the at least one equipment via the at least one network element; and

a server communicatively coupled to the master control unit over a network, wherein the server is configured to process a variety of information useful for the master control unit.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one network element comprises one or more inputs and outputs and is configured to collect energy data at the at least one equipment.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one network element communicates with the master control unit using wireless communications comprising at least one of 802.11, RS485, RS232, XBEE radio, Zigbee, 802.15.4, GPRS, and low-rate wireless personal area network (LR-WPAN).

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the master control unit comprises a programmable logic controller, a plurality of communication interfaces, a plurality of equipment interfaces, and one or more data storage units.

6. The system of claim 5, wherein the programmable logic controller is configured to perform the following:

load control, load communications, system communications and data-logging, and self-refining control.

The system of claim 6, wherein the self-refining control comprises optimizing and managing overall energy demand using at least data collected from the at least one network elements to assess energy demand and create one or more target values for the load control matrix, wherein the load control matrix comprises a cluster of simple functions that operate together with information about the value of load and operating performance at each network element, current consumption and demand data, and predefined targets and tolerances as set by the processor module.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising one or more sensors communicatively coupled to at least the one or more network elements and the master control unit.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the one or more sensors comprises at least one of a temperature sensor, a power failure detector, a humidity sensor, and a motion detector.

10. The system of claim 1, further comprising a monitoring system communicatively coupled to the master control unit.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the monitoring system comprises a meter device for obtain energy consumption readings useful for additional operation and monitoring functions.

12. A system for providing automated energy demand management, comprising:

at least one network element communicatively coupled to at least one equipment and configured to collect energy data at the at least one equipment, wherein the at least one equipment comprises at least one of a thermostat, an HVAC unit, air conditioning unit, a heating unit, a lighting element, an environmental condition sensor, a motorized equipment, and an appliance;

a master control unit communicatively coupled to the at least one network element, wherein the master control unit comprises a programmable logic controller, a plurality of communication interfaces, a plurality of equipment interfaces, and one or more data storage units, and is configured to monitor and manage energy use at the at least one equipment via the at least one network element, wherein the programmable logic controller is configured to perform at least one of the following;

load control, load communications, system communications and data-logging, and self-refining control;

one or more sensors communicatively coupled to at least the one or more network elements and the master control unit, wherein the one or more sensors comprises at least one of a temperature sensor, a power failure detector, a humidity sensor, and a motion detector.

a server communicatively coupled to the master control unit over a network, wherein the server is configured to process a variety of information useful for the master control unit; and

a monitoring system communicatively coupled to the master control unit, wherein the monitoring system comprises a meter device for obtain energy consumption readings useful for additional operation and monitoring functions.

12-1. A system for providing automated energy demand management, comprising:

a network element interface communicatively coupled to at least one network element, wherein the at least one network element is communicatively coupled to at least one equipment that consumes energy or generates energy;

a data storage interface communicatively coupled to at least one data storage unit;

a network interface communicatively coupled to at least one web server over a network;

at least one processor comprising a programmable logic controller configured to perform at least the following;

load control, load communications, system communications and data-logging, and self-refining control.

13. A non-transitory computer-implemented method for providing automated energy demand management at a site, comprising:

determining, at a computer processor, initial demand targets and tolerances;

monitoring power usage at equipment using at least one network element communicatively coupled to the equipment;

processing, using the computer, information from the equipment to determine efficient power management of the equipment; and

transmitting control data to manage power efficiently at the equipment.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the initial demand targets and tolerances are obtained from at least one of user input of known information at the site and information received from the at least one network element.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein monitoring power usage comprises performing continuous scans using the at least one network at predetermined intervals.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein information collected from the continuous scans are used immediately or stored in at least one data storage unit.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein processing the information comprises performing at least the following:

load control, load communications, system communications and data-logging, and self-refining control.

18. A computer readable medium comprising code which when executed causes a computer to perform the method of claim 13.

19. A non-transitory computer-implemented method for providing automated energy demand management at a site, comprising:

receiving, at a computer processor, a starting demand value;

setting, at the computer processor, a limit demand target value based on the starting demand value;

analyzing, at the computer processor, actual demand values at a plurality of equipment at a site based on operating a master control unit that seeks to maintain demand values at less than or equal to the limit demand target value;

storing, in one or more data storage units, load values for each of a plurality of equipment communicatively coupled to the master control unit; and

maintaining, by the computer processor, a priority list for the plurality of equipment based on the load values, wherein the priority list is used to provide efficient automated energy demand management at a site.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the at least one equipment comprises at least one of a thermostat, an HVAC unit, air conditioning unit, a heating unit, a lighting element, an environmental condition sensor, a motorized equipment, and an appliance.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the starting demand value is received from a configuration file or manual input.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the limit demand target value is less than the starting demand value.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein analyzing actual demand values comprises cycling on and off each of the plurality of equipment in a structured manner in the event the actual demand approaches the limit demand target value.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein a priority value is assigned to each of the plurality of equipment based on ability to reach and perform at the limit demand target value.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein a lower priority is assigned to equipment that more easily reach and perform at the limit demand target value and a higher priority is assigned to equipment that have more difficulty in reaching and performing at the limit demand target value.

25. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

activating, at the master control unit, a demand control system in the event demand at the site reaches a low-level threshold; and

cycling on and off each of the plurality of equipment based on assigned priority on the priority list, wherein each of the plurality of equipment is cycled for periods of time proportionate to its assigned priority.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein lower priority equipment is cycled for longer periods of time and higher priority equipment is cycled for shorter periods of time to ensure efficient energy demand management at the site.

27. A computer readable medium comprising code which when executed causes a computer to perform the method of claim 19.

26-2. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

automatically adjusting cycling of the plurality of equipment based on changes in the priority list and changes in performance of each of the plurality of equipment.
