Abstract

Sensing a force and/or a change in motion proximate to an arbitrarily-shaped surface via a conformal sensing element (e.g., a pressure sensor, an accelerometer) disposed on a flexible substrate and having a sufficient mechanical coupling to the surface. The conformality of the sensing element facilitates intimate proximity to the surface to ensure accurate sensing. Examples of arbitrarily-shaped surfaces include body parts of a person (e.g., a head). A processor receiving one or more signals from the sensing element may provide information relating to possible injury to a body part (e.g., head trauma) resulting from sensed forces and/or changes in motion. Such information may be conveyed by one or more output devices that provide indications of possible degrees of injury/trauma. A conformal sensing apparatus may be integrated with a protective garment or accessory, such as a helmet, wherein the conformality of the sensing apparatus also ensures sufficient comfort for the wearer.

Claims

1. An apparatus for sensing force and/or acceleration proximate to a person'"'"'s head, the apparatus comprising:

a flexible substrate to substantially conform to a surface of the person'"'"'s head so as to facilitate comfortable and safe intimate proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head;

at least one sensing element disposed on the flexible substrate, the at least one sensing element including at least one of a pressure sensor and an accelerometer and generating at least one output signal;

a processor, disposed on the flexible substrate and communicatively coupled to the at least one sensing element, to receive and process the at least one output signal; and

a memory, disposed on the flexible substrate and communicatively coupled to the processor, to store data relating to the at least one output signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensing element includes the pressure sensor.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the pressure sensor is an omni-directional air pressure sensor.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the at least one output signal represents air pressures in a range of from approximately 4 PSI to 100 PSI.

5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the pressure sensor is a dynamic transducer, and wherein the at least one output signal has a signal level range of approximately 60 dB to 170 dB.

6. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the at least one sensing element includes pressure sensor circuitry coupled to the pressure sensor, and wherein the pressure sensor circuitry includes:

an automatic gain control (AGC) amplifier;

an analog-digital converter; and

an adjustable resister to adjust a gain of the AGC amplifier.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensing element includes the accelerometer.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the accelerometer is rated for g-forces of approximately 50 g or less.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the memory stores processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to sample the at least one output signal of the accelerometer at a frequency of up to 1 MHz.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensing element includes the pressure sensor and the accelerometer.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a coupling mechanism to mechanically couple the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head.

12. A helmet to be worn on the person'"'"'s head, the helmet comprising:

the apparatus of claim 11,

wherein the helmet constitutes at least a portion of the coupling mechanism.

13. The helmet of claim 12, wherein the helmet includes at least one suspension pad, and wherein:

the apparatus is integrated with the at least one suspension pad of the helmet.

14. The helmet of claim 13, wherein the helmet further includes at least one pad coupling mechanism to detachably couple the at least one suspension pad to the helmet so as to facilitate flexible placement of the at least one suspension pad on the helmet.

15. The helmet of claim 13, wherein the helmet is a combat helmet.

16. The helmet of claim 15, wherein the combat helmet is an Army Modular Integrated Communication Helmet (MICH).

17. The helmet of claim 15, wherein the combat helmet is a Marine Corp Lightweight Helmet (LW).

18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the apparatus is configured as a flexible tape.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein a thickness of the flexible tape is less than five millimeters.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the flexible tape is sticky on at least a portion of at least one tape surface of the flexible tape.

21. The apparatus of claim 1, further including at least one flexible and/or stretchable interconnect disposed on the flexible substrate to couple the at least one sensing element to at least the processor.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the at least one flexible and/or stretchable interconnect is stretchable up to at least 300%.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the at least one flexible and/or stretchable interconnect includes at least one of:

a wavy interconnect;

a bent interconnect;

a buckled interconnect;

an encapsulated interconnect; and

a serpentine pattern of conductive metal.

24. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flexible substrate comprises at least one of a plastic material and an elastomeric material.

25. The apparatus of claim 24, wherein the flexible substrate comprises at least one of a PDMS, a polyimide, a photopatternable silicone, an SU8 polymer, a PDS polydustrene, a parylene, a parylene-N, an ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene, a poly ether ketone, a polyurethane, a polyactic acid, a polyglycolic acid, a polymer composite, a silicone/siloxane, a polytetrafluoroethylene, a polyamic acid, and a polymethyl acrylate.

26. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an encapsulant, wherein at least the at least one sensing element is encapsulated by the encapsulant.

27. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the flexible substrate is configured such that the apparatus has a bending radius in a range of approximately 1 centimeter to 4 centimeters.

28. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the at least one sensing element and the at least one processor are commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) electronic components.

29. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a battery to provide power to the apparatus.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein the battery has a capacity of at least 660 mAh.

31. The apparatus of claim 29, further comprising switching circuitry, disposed on the flexible substrate and electrically coupled to the battery, to detect the proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head and to couple and/or decouple the battery to at least the processor based at least in part on the detected proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, wherein the switching circuitry comprises:

at least one capacitive probe to detect a change in an electric field so as to detect the proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the at least one capacitive probe detects an electrical conductivity of skin at the surface of the person'"'"'s head so as to detect the proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head.

34. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the processor is configured to provide information relating to possible head trauma of the person based at least in part on the at least one output signal.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the processor controls the memory such that the information relating to possible head trauma constitutes at least a portion of the data stored in the memory.

36. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the information constituting at least a portion of the data stored in the memory relates to a blast event.

37. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the processor is configured to identify if a pressure and/or an acceleration represented by the at least one output signal exceeds at least one trigger value.

38. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the processor is configured to identify a significant blast event based at least in part on the at least one trigger value.

39. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the processor is configured to determine a blast exposure of the person based at least in part on the at least one trigger value.

40. The apparatus of claim 37, wherein the at least one trigger value is stored in the memory.

41. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a communication interface communicatively coupled to at least the processor, to communicate information to and/or from the apparatus.

42. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one light source coupled to the processor to provide at least one visual cue representing impact or trauma based at least in part on the at least one output signal generated by the at least one sensing element.

43. The apparatus of claim 42, wherein the at least one light source includes a plurality of LEDs having different colors respectively corresponding to a degree of the impact or trauma.

44. A method, comprising:

A) sensing force and/or acceleration proximate to a person'"'"'s head via at least one sensing element disposed on a flexible substrate in sufficient contact with the person'"'"'s head, the flexible substrate substantially conforming to a surface of the person'"'"'s head so as to facilitate comfortable and safe intimate proximity of the at least one sensing element to the person'"'"'s head, the at least one sensing element including at least one of a pressure sensor and an accelerometer.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein the at least one sensing element includes the pressure sensor, and wherein A) comprises:

sensing a pressure proximate to the person'"'"'s head.

46. The method of claim 44, wherein the at least one sensing element includes the accelerometer, and wherein A) comprises:

sensing the acceleration proximate to the person'"'"'s head.

47. The method of claim 44, wherein the at least one sensing element includes the pressure sensor and the accelerometer, and wherein A) comprises:

sensing both a pressure and the acceleration proximate to the person'"'"'s head.

48. The method of claim 44, further comprising:

B) detecting the proximity of the at least one sensing element to the person'"'"'s head; and

C) coupling and/or decoupling power to and/or from the at least one sensing element based at least in part on B).

49. The method of claim 48, wherein B) comprises:

detecting an electrical conductivity of skin at the surface of the person'"'"'s head so as to detect the proximity of the at least one sensing element to the person'"'"'s head.

50. The method of claim 44, further comprising:

B) providing information relating to possible head trauma of the person based at least in part on A).

51. The method of claim 50, wherein B) comprises:

B1) identifying if the force and/or the acceleration sensed in A) exceeds at least one trigger value.

52. The method of claim 51, wherein B1) comprises:

identifying a significant blast event based at least in part on the at least one trigger value.

53. The method of claim 51, wherein B1) comprises:

determining a blast exposure of the person based at least in part on the at least one trigger value.

54. The method of claim 50, wherein B) comprises:

B1) providing at least one audible cue and/or at least one visual cue representing impact or trauma.

55. The method of claim 54, wherein B1) comprises:

providing the at least one visual cue as a plurality visual color light cues, wherein different color light cues of the plurality of visual color light cues respectively correspond to a degree of the impact or trauma.

56. A helmet comprising:

at least one suspension pad; and

an apparatus, integrated with the at least one suspension pad, to sense a force and an acceleration proximate to a head of a person wearing the helmet, the apparatus comprising;

a flexible substrate to substantially conform to a surface of the person'"'"'s head so as to facilitate comfortable and safe intimate proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head;

a pressure sensor and an accelerometer disposed on the flexible substrate and generating at least one output signal;

a processor communicatively coupled to the pressure sensor and the accelerometer to receive and process the at least one output signal so as to provide information relating to a blast exposure;

a power source; and

switching circuitry, disposed on the flexible substrate and electrically coupled to the power source, to detect the proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head and to couple and/or decouple the power source and at least the processor based at least in part on the detected proximity of the apparatus to the person'"'"'s head.

57. A system comprising the helmet of claim 56, the system further comprising:

at least one light source communicatively coupled to the processor to provide at least one visual cue representing impact or trauma relating to the blast exposure based at least in part on the at least one output signal.

58. The system of claim 57, wherein the at least one light source includes a plurality of LEDs having different colors respectively corresponding to a degree of the impact or trauma.
