Abstract

A liquid crystal display includes a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other, a first spacer and a second spacer on the first substrate and have different heights, and a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate and including a plurality of a liquid crystal molecule. The first spacer and the second spacer include a photosensitive material defining a maximum height of a spacer with respect to a predetermined a cross-section width dimension of the spacer, and heights less than the maximum height with respect to cross-section width dimensions larger than the predetermined cross-section width dimension. The first spacer and the second spacer can include a black pigment.

Claims

1. A liquid crystal display, comprising:

a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other;

a first spacer and a second spacer on the first substrate, and having different heights; and

a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate, and including a plurality of a liquid crystal molecule,

wherein the first spacer and the second spacer include a photosensitive material defining a maximum height of a spacer with respect to a predetermined a cross-section width dimension of the spacer, and heights less than the maximum height with respect to cross-section width dimensions larger than the predetermined cross-section width dimension.

2. The liquid crystal display of claim 1, wherein:

the first spacer and the second spacer include a black pigment.

3. The liquid crystal display of claim 2, wherein:

the first spacer and the second spacer include the same material.

4. The liquid crystal display of claim 3, wherein:

a difference between the heights of the first spacer and the second spacer is about 0.4 micrometer or more.

5. The liquid crystal display of claim 4, further comprising:

a light blocking member on the first substrate,

wherein the first spacer and the second spacer include a same material as the light blocking member.

6. The liquid crystal display of claim 5, wherein:

the spacer which has a larger height of the first spacer and the second spacer, has a cross-section width dimension of about 30 micrometers to about 35 micrometers.

7. The liquid crystal display of claim 6, further comprising:

a third spacer on the first substrate and having a height which is different from the height of the first spacer and the second spacer,

wherein the third spacer includes the photosensitive material.

8. The liquid crystal display of claim 7, wherein:

the photosensitive material has a positive photosensitivity.

9. The liquid crystal display of claim 1, wherein:

the first spacer and the second spacer include the same material.

10. The liquid crystal display of claim 9, wherein:

a difference between the heights of the first spacer and the second spacer is about 0.4 micrometer or more.

11. The liquid crystal display of claim 10, further comprising:

a light blocking member on the first substrate,

wherein the first spacer and the second spacer include a same material as the light blocking member.

12. The liquid crystal display of claim 11, wherein:

the spacer which has a larger height of the first spacer and the second spacer, has a cross-section width dimension of about 30 micrometers to about 35 micrometers.

13. The liquid crystal display of claim 12, further comprising:

a third spacer on the first substrate and having a height which is different from the height of the first spacer and the second spacer,

wherein the third spacer includes the photosensitive material.

14. The liquid crystal display of claim 13, wherein:

the photosensitive material has a positive photosensitivity.

15. The liquid crystal display of claim 1, wherein:

a difference between the heights of the first spacer and the second spacer is about 0.4 micrometer or more.

16. The liquid crystal display of claim 15, wherein:

the spacer which has a larger height of the first spacer and the second spacer, has a cross-section width dimension of about 30 micrometers to about 35 micrometers.

17. The liquid crystal display of claim 16, further comprising:

a third spacer on the first substrate and having a height which is different from the height of the first spacer and the second spacer,

wherein the third spacer includes the photosensitive material.

18. The liquid crystal display of claim 17, wherein:

the photosensitive material has a positive photosensitivity.

19. The liquid crystal display of claim 1, further comprising:

a light blocking member on the first substrate,

wherein the first spacer and the second spacer include a same material as the light blocking member.

20. The liquid crystal display of claim 19, wherein:

the spacer which has a larger height of the first spacer and the second spacer, has a cross-section width dimension of about 30 micrometers to about 35 micrometers.

21. The liquid crystal display of claim 20, further comprising:

a third spacer on the first substrate and having a height which is different from the height of the first spacer and the second spacer,

wherein the third spacer includes the photosensitive material.

22. The liquid crystal display of claim 20, wherein:

the photosensitive material has a positive photosensitivity.

23. The liquid crystal display of claim 10, wherein:

the spacer which has a larger height of the first spacer and the second spacer, has a cross-section width dimension of about 30 micrometers to about 35 micrometers.

24. The liquid crystal display of claim 23, further comprising:

a third spacer on the first substrate and having a height which is different from the height of the first spacer and the second spacer,

wherein the third spacer includes the photosensitive material.

25. The liquid crystal display of claim 24, wherein:

the photosensitive material has a positive photosensitivity.

26. The liquid crystal display of claim 1, further comprising:

a third spacer on the first substrate and having a height which is different from the height of the first spacer and the second spacer,

wherein the third spacer includes the photosensitive material.

27. The liquid crystal display of claim 26, wherein:

the photosensitive material has a positive photosensitivity.

28. The liquid crystal display of claim 1, wherein:

the photosensitive material has a positive photosensitivity. 29. A method of forming a liquid crystal display, the method including;

disposing a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other;

forming a first spacer and a second spacer on the first substrate and from a photosensitive material, the first and second spacers having different heights; and

disposing a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates;

wherein the photosensitive material has a material characteristic of defining a maximum height of a spacer with respect to a predetermined a cross-section width dimension of the spacer, and defining heights less than the maximum height with respect to cross-section width dimensions larger than the predetermined cross-section width dimension.
