Abstract

A method for deploying a wireless network in accordance with particular embodiments includes deploying one or more base stations configured to provide wireless connections between the one or more base stations and one or more endpoints. The method also includes deploying one or more remote transceivers configured to provide wireless connections between the one or more remote transceivers and one or more endpoints. The method further includes modifying at least one base station of the one or more base stations. The modified base station is configured to control the one or more remote transceivers. The method additionally includes modifying at least one remote transceiver of the one or more remote transceivers. The modified remote transceiver is configured to control the at least one remote transceiver without receiving control information from the at least one base station.

Claims

1. A method for deploying a wireless network, comprising:

deploying one or more base stations configured to provide wireless connections between the one or more base stations and one or more endpoints;

deploying one or more remote transceivers configured to provide wireless connections between the one or more remote transceivers and one or more endpoints;

modifying at least one base station of the one or more base stations, the modified base station configured to control the one or more remote transceivers; and

modifying at least one remote transceiver of the one or more remote transceivers, the at least one remote transceiver modified to control the at least one remote transceiver without receiving control information from the at least one base station.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising establishing a wired connection between the at least one base station and the one or more remote transceivers.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein establishing the wired connection comprises establishing a wired Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) connection.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising establishing a wired connection between the at least one remote transceiver and a network.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein establishing the wired connection comprises establishing a wired Internet Protocol connection.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein modifying the at least one base station of the one or more base stations comprises converting the base station from a macro base station to a remote transceiver controller.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein modifying the at least one remote transceiver of the one or more remote transceivers comprises converting the at least one remote transceiver to at least one pico base station.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising, prior to modifying the at least one base station of the one or more base stations, determining that a traffic load of the one or more wireless connections provided by the one or more base stations has exceeded a threshold.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising, prior to modifying the at least one remote transceiver of the one or more remote transceivers, determining that a traffic load of the one or more wireless connections provided by the one or more remote transceivers exceeds a threshold.

10. A method for deploying a wireless network, comprising:

deploying one or more remote transceivers configured to provide wireless connections between the one or more remote transceivers and one or more endpoints;

establishing a first wired connection between at least one base station and the one or more remote transceivers;

installing a module in at least one remote transceiver of the one or more remote transceivers, the module configured to control the at least one remote transceiver without receiving control information from the at least one base station; and

converting the first wired connection between the at least one remote transceiver to a second wired connection between the at least one remote transceiver and a network, the second wired connection comprising an Internet Protocol connection.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein establishing a first wired connection comprises establishing a wired Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) connection.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein installing a module in at least one remote transceiver of the one or more remote transceivers comprises converting the at least one remote transceiver to at least one pico base station.

13. The method of claim 10, further comprising, prior to installing the module in the at least one remote transceiver of the one or more remote transceivers, determining that a traffic load of the one or more wireless connections provided by the one or more remote transceivers exceeds a threshold.

14. An apparatus for deploying a wireless network, comprising:

a module configured to be installed in a macro base station configured to provide one or more wireless connections between the macro base station and one or more endpoints, the module comprising;

an interface configured to establish one or more wired Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) connections between the macro base station in which the module is installed and one or more remote transceivers, the one or more remote transceivers configured to provide one or more wireless connections between the one or more remote transceivers and one or more endpoints; and

a processor configured to generate control commands to provide one or more parameters associated with the one or more remote transceivers, the control commands sent to the remote transceivers via the CPRI connections.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the control commands specify a non-uniform power distribution for the one or more wireless connections between the one or more remote transceivers and the one or more endpoints.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the module is further configured to convert the macro base station to a remote transceiver controller.

17. An apparatus for deploying a wireless network, comprising:

a module configured to be installed in a remote transceiver, the remote transceiver one of a plurality of remote transceivers configured to provide one or more wireless connections between the remote transceivers and one or more endpoints, the module comprising;

an interface configured to establish one or more wired Internet Protocol connections configured to provide a backhaul connection for the remote transceiver in which the module is installed; and

a processor configured to generate control commands to provide one or more parameters associated with one or more wireless connections between the remote transceiver in which the module is installed and one or more endpoints.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the module is further configured to convert the remote transceiver to a pico base station.

19. An apparatus for deploying a wireless network, comprising:

a wireless interface configured to establish one or more wireless connections with one or more endpoints; and

a wired interface configured to receive a module, the module configured to;

establish one or more wired Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) connections with one or more remote transceivers, the one or more remote transceivers configured to provide one or more wireless connections between the one or more remote transceivers and one or more endpoints; and

generate control commands to provide one or more parameters associated with the one or more remote transceivers, the control commands sent to the remote transceivers via the CPRI connections.

20. An apparatus for deploying a wireless network, comprising:

a wireless interface configured to establish one or more wireless connections with one or more endpoints; and

a wired interface configured to receive a module, the module configured to;

convert one or more wired Common Public Radio Interface (CPRI) connections to one or more Internet Protocol connections; and

generate control commands to provide one or more parameters associated with one or more wireless connections between the remote transceiver in which the module is installed and one or more endpoints.
