Abstract

In accordance with embodiments, there are provided mechanisms and methods for creating a plurality of cnames for a website. These mechanisms and methods for creating a plurality of cnames for a website can provide multiple DNS entries for a single website. The ability to provide multiple DNS entries for a single website can enable websites to be accessible from multiple locations.

Claims

1. A computer program product, comprising a non-transitory computer usable medium having a computer readable program code embodied therein, the computer readable program code adapted to be executed to implement a method for creating a plurality of cnames for a website, the method comprising:

receiving a request to create a website on a subdomain;

creating a first cname pointing to a first location on a network, utilizing an identifier of the subdomain;

creating a second cname pointing to a second location on the network, utilizing the identifier of the subdomain; and

providing access to the website via the first cname and the second cname.

2. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the website includes a first website to be created on the subdomain.

3. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the subdomain is of a multi-tenant on-demand database system.

4. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the first location is on the subdomain.

5. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the second location is on a domain separate from the subdomain.

6. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the first location includes a server on which a publisher of the website stores the website.

7. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the second location includes a server on which a service caches a copy of the website.

8. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein the request includes parameters for creating the first cname and the second cname.

9. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein the parameters include a first subset and a second subset.

10. The computer program product of claim 9, wherein the first subset of the parameters include a domain name pointing to the first location, a suffix of the website, an identifier of the subdomain, and an identifier of a previous subdomain.

11. The computer program product of claim 9, wherein the second subset of the parameters include a domain name pointing to the second location, a suffix of the website, an identifier of the subdomain, and an identifier of a previous subdomain.

12. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein the first cname is created based on a first subset of the parameters.

13. The computer program product of claim 8, wherein the second cname is created based on a second subset of the parameters.

14. The computer program product of claim 1, further comprising determining whether a previous first cname and a previous second cname exist for the subdomain.

15. The computer program product of claim 14, further comprising deleting the previous first cname and the previous second cname prior to creating the first cname and the second cname, in response to a determination that the previous first cname and the previous second cname exist for the subdomain.

16. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein providing access to the website via the first cname and the second cname includes storing the first cname and the second cname as domain name service (DNS) entries.

17. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein secure network traffic is provided access to the website via the first cname.

18. The computer program product of claim 1, wherein unsecure network traffic is provided access to the website via the second cname.

19. A method, comprising:

receiving a request to create a website on a subdomain;

creating a first cname pointing to a first location on a network, utilizing an identifier of the subdomain;

creating a second cname pointing to a second location on the network, utilizing the identifier of the subdomain; and

providing access to the website via the first cname and the second cname, utilizing a processor.

20. An apparatus, comprising:

a processor for;

receiving a request to create a website on a subdomain;

creating a first cname pointing to a first location on a network, utilizing an identifier of the subdomain;

creating a second cname pointing to a second location on the network, utilizing the identifier of the subdomain; and

providing access to the website via the first cname and the second cname.

21. The apparatus if claim 20, wherein the processor is in a multi-tenant on-demand database system.

22. A method for transmitting code, comprising:

transmitting code to receive a request to create a website on a subdomain;

transmitting code to create a first cname pointing to a first location on a network, utilizing an identifier of the subdomain;

transmitting code to create a second cname pointing to a second location on the network, utilizing the identifier of the subdomain; and

transmitting code to provide access to the website via the first cname and the second cname, utilizing a processor.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the method is performed by a multi-tenant on-demand database system.
