Abstract

A digital image capture device for use in capturing underwater digital images, comprising: a watertight housing; an image sensor for capturing a digital image; an optical system for imaging a scene onto the image sensor; a means for setting the digital image capture device to operate in an underwater photography mode or a normal photography mode; and a processor. The processor performs the steps of: capturing a digital image of a scene using the image sensor; controlling a color reproduction of the captured digital image responsive to whether the digital image capture device is operating in an underwater photography mode or a normal photography mode; and storing the captured digital image in a processor accessible memory.

Claims

1. A digital image capture device for use in capturing underwater digital images, comprising:

a watertight housing;

an image sensor for capturing a digital image;

an optical system for imaging a scene onto the image sensor;

a means for determining an object distance between the digital image capture device and a main subject in the scene; and

a processor for performing the following steps when the digital image capture device is in an underwater capture mode;

determining the object distance for a particular underwater scene;

capturing a digital image of the particular underwater scene using the image sensor; and

controlling a color reproduction of the captured digital image responsive to the determined object distance.

2. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the color reproduction is controlled by applying a color balance adjustment to the captured digital image, wherein the amount of color balance adjustment is responsive to the determined object distance.

3. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the color reproduction is controlled by adjusting one or more color controls associated with the image sensor.

4. The digital image capture device of claim 3 wherein the image sensor has a plurality of color channels, and wherein the color controls are used to control integration times for one or more of the color channels.

5. The digital image capture device of claim 3 wherein the image sensor has a plurality of color channels, and wherein the color controls are used to control gain factors applied to one or more of the color channels.

The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the color reproduction is controlled by applying an object distance dependent color transform that applies one or more of a color balance adjustment, a flare correction, a contrast adjustment, a saturation adjustment or a tone scale adjustment.

7. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the means for determining the object distance is an auto focus system which determines a focus distance to an object in the scene.

8. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein, capture mode metadata is associated with the captured digital image indicating whether the image was captured in the underwater mode.

9. The digital image capture device of claim 8 wherein the color reproduction is adjusted on a host computer responsive to the capture mode metadata.

The digital image capture device of claim 1 further including a means for sensing whether the digital image capture device is underwater, and wherein the underwater capture mode is automatically selected when the digital image capture device is sensed to be underwater, and a normal picture taking mode is automatically selected when the digital image capture device is sensed to not be underwater.

11. The digital image capture device of claim 10 wherein the means for sensing whether the digital image capture device is underwater is a pressure sensor.

12. The digital image capture device of claim 10 wherein the means for sensing whether the digital image capture device is underwater is a moisture sensor.

13. The digital image capture device of claim 1 further including a means for sensing a depth between the digital image capture device and the surface of the water.

14. The digital image capture device of claim 13 wherein the color reproduction is also controlled responsive to a sensed depth.

15. The digital image capture device of claim 13 wherein the depth is sensed by a pressure sensor

16. The digital image capture device of claim 15 wherein the underwater mode is activated responsive to a pressure sensed by the pressure sensor.

17. The digital image capture device of claim 1 further including a tilt sensor for sensing an orientation of the digital image capture device, and wherein the color reproduction is also controlled responsive to a sensed orientation.

18. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein different underwater modes are provided for a plurality of different water classifications.

19. The digital image capture device of claim 18 wherein the different underwater modes include a fresh water mode, a salt water mode or a swimming pool mode.

20. The digital image capture device of claim 1 further including a geographic location sensing means, and wherein the color reproduction is also controlled responsive to a sensed geographic location.

21. The digital image capture device of claim 20 wherein the sensed geographic location is compared to a geographic database to identify a body of water and wherein an underwater mode is selected responsive to the identified body of water.

22. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the digital image capture device is a digital still camera.

23. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the digital image capture device is a digital video camera.

24. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the processor further applies an digital image sharpening algorithms, and wherein a degree of sharpening applied to the captured digital image by the digital image sharpening algorithm is adjusted responsive to whether the digital image capture device is in an underwater capture mode.

25. The digital image capture device of claim 24 wherein the degree of sharpening applied to a red color channel of the captured digital image is reduced for the underwater capture mode.

26. The digital image capture device of claim 1 wherein the processor further applies a noise reduction algorithm, and wherein a degree of noise reduction applied to the captured digital image by the noise reduction algorithm is adjusted responsive to whether the digital image capture device is in an underwater capture mode.
