Abstract

In one aspect, a system includes a transaction handler to process transactions, a data warehouse to store transaction data recording the transactions, a portal configured to receive a request specifying a spending pattern distribution across more than one merchant, and at least one processor coupled with the data warehouse and the portal and configured to determine, based on the transaction data, whether or not transactions of a user satisfy the spending pattern distribution.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, in a computing device, a request specifying a spending pattern distribution across more than one merchant; and

determining, by the computing device, whether or not transactions of a user satisfy the spending pattern distribution, based on transaction data recording transactions processed by a transaction handler.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

presenting a user interface to receive the spending pattern distribution across more than one merchant.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the spending pattern distribution includes a plurality threshold values, each of the threshold value indicating a level of spending with one or more merchants.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein each of the threshold value indicates a spending volume.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein each of the threshold value indicates a transaction volume.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the more than one merchant includes a first merchant and one or more peers of the merchant.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

in response to the request, identifying the one or more peers of the merchant using transaction data recorded for transactions processed by the transaction handler;

wherein the one or more peers of the merchant are implicitly identified in the request.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the request is received from the first merchant;

and the spending pattern distribution includes a first threshold of a parameter for spending with the first merchant and a second threshold of the parameter for spending with a peer group of the merchant.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the parameter is one of:

an aggregated spending volume; and

an aggregated transaction volume.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the identifying of the one or more peers of the merchant includes:

identifying a merchant cluster in which the first merchant is; and

selecting one or more peers of the merchant from the merchant cluster.

11. The method of claim 6, wherein the request includes an identification of the user.

12. The method of claim 6, wherein the request comprises an identification of a browser cookie to identify the user;

and the method further comprises;

identifying an account identifier of the user based on the browser cookie, wherein each transaction of the user is processed by the transaction handler to make a payment from an issuer to an acquirer via the transaction handler in response to the account identifier of an account of the user, as issued by the issuer, being submitted by a respective merchant to the acquirer, the issuer to make the payment on behalf of the user, the acquirer to receive the payment on behalf of the respective merchant.

13. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

determining a list of users each satisfying requirements specified in the request, the requirements including the spending pattern distribution.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the requirements further include a zip code of primary spending geographic region of each respective user.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

providing an advertisement to the list of users in accordance with the request.

16. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

generating a profile from the transactions of the user, the profile comprising an aggregated spending summary of the data about the transactions recorded at the transaction handler;

wherein the determining is based at least in part on the profile.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the determining is based on a factor value of the profile, the factor value determined based on a factor analysis of transactions processed by the transaction handler.

18. A tangible computer-readable storage medium storing instructions which, when executed on a computer, cause the computer to perform a method comprising:

receiving, in the computer, a request specifying a spending pattern distribution across more than one merchant; and

determining, by the computer, whether or not transactions of a user satisfy the spending pattern distribution, based on transaction data recording transactions processed by a transaction handler.

19. A computing apparatus, comprising:

a transaction handler to process transactions, each of the transactions being processed to make a payment from an issuer to an acquirer via the transaction handler in response to an account identifier of a customer, as issued by the issuer, being submitted by a merchant to the acquirer, the issuer to make the payment on behalf of the customer, the acquirer to receive the payment on behalf of the merchant;

a data warehouse to store transaction data recording the transactions;

a portal configured to receive a request specifying a spending pattern distribution across more than one merchant; and

at least one processor coupled with the data warehouse and the portal and configured to determine whether or not transactions of a user satisfy the spending pattern distribution, based on the transaction data.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising:

a profile generator coupled with the data warehouse to generate an aggregated spending profile of the user, wherein the user is selected in accordance with the request based at least in part on the aggregated spending profile.
