Abstract

The present application is directed to a novel composition which acts as a barrier to noxious agents while adding self-detoxifying catalytic treatments to neutralize the noxious and harmful warfare agents when applied for example on a fabric, or other solid support.

Claims

1. A composition for protection against harmful or noxious agents comprising:

a) from 1 to 95% by weight of a porous media;

b) from 2 to 60% by weight of an aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer or monomer; and

,

c) from 10 to 90% by weight of water.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said composition is further used to neutralize or decontaminate said harmful or noxious agents coming in contact with said composition.

3. The composition of claim 2, further comprising:

a) from 0 to 10% by weight of a surfactant agent;

b) from 0 to 10% by weight of an epoxy resin or of a crosslinking agent;

c) from 0 to 90% by weight of a polyvinyl acetate polymer or copolymer;

d) from 0 to 20% by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer or copolymer;

e) from 0 to 60% by weight of a polyurethane polymer;

f) from 0 to 60% by weight of an acrylic polymer;

g) from 0 to 5% by weight of one or more metal salts or oxides; and

,

h) from 0 to 10% by weight of a defoamer agent.

4. The composition of claim 1, wherein said porous media is activated carbon particles or zeolite.

5. The composition of claim 4, wherein said activated particles are in the form of powder, beads, granules or nanotubes.

6. The composition of claim 1, wherein said porous media is a carbon fabric.

7. The composition of claim 6, wherein said carbon fabric is in the form of a fiber, woven cloth, non-woven cloth, knit cloth or filter.

8. The composition of claim 1, wherein said porous media is a combination of activated carbon and zeolite.

9. The composition of claim 1, wherein said aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer or monomer is polyethylenimine.

10. The composition of claim 3, wherein said polyvinyl acetate polymer or copolymer is ethylene vinyl acetate.

11. The composition of claim 3, wherein said surfactant agent is present in an amount of 0.1 to 10% by weight.

12. The composition of claim 3, wherein said epoxy resin or said crosslinking agent is present in an amount of 0.1 to 10% by weight.

13. The composition of claim 3, wherein said polyvinyl acetate polymer or copolymer is present in an amount of 5 to 20% by weight.

14. The composition of claim 1, wherein said aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer is replaced by a vinyl amine and polyvinyl alcohol copolymer.

15. A method of preparing a laminated support using a laminate composition of claim 1.

38. A laminated support comprising one or more layers of the composition of claim 1.

39. The laminated support of claim 38 combined with one or more layers of the composition comprising:

a) from 2 to 60% by weight of an aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer or monomer;

b) from 0 to 10% by weight of a surfactant agent;

c) from o to 10% by weight of an epoxy resin or of a crosslinking agent;

d) from 0 to 90% by weight of a polyvinyl acetate polymer or copolymer;

e) from 0 to 20% by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer or copolymer;

f) from 0 to 60% by weight of a polyurethane polymer;

g) from 0 to 60% by weight of an acrylic polymer;

h) from 0 to 5% by weight of one or more metal salts or metal oxides;

i) from 0 to 10% by weight of a defoamer agent; and

j) from 10 to 90% by weight of water.

40. The laminated support of claim 39, wherein said aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer is replaced by a vinyl amine and polyvinyl alcohol copolymer.

41. The laminated support of claim 38, wherein said porous media used is a combination of activated carbon and zeolite.

16. A method of preparing a laminated support comprising the steps of:

a) mixing together from 1 to 95% by weight of a porous media, from 2 to 60% by weight of an aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer or monomer, from 0 to 90% by weight of a polyvinyl acetate polymer or copolymer, from 0 to 20% by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer or copolymer, from 0 to 60% by weight of a polyurethane polymer, from 0 to 60% by weight of an acrylic polymer, and from 10 to 90% by weight of water at a temperature between 20 to 100°

C.;

b) adding from 0 to 10% by weight of a surfactant agent, from 0 to 10% by weight of an epoxy resin or of a crosslinking agent, from 0 to 5% by weight of one or more metal salts or oxides, and from 0 to 10% by weight of a defoamer agent to yield a laminate composition;

c) casting said laminate composition on a solid support to yield said laminated support; and

d) curing said laminated support at a temperature in the range of 100 and 220°

C.

17. The process of claim 16, wherein, in step a), from 2 to 60% by weight of said aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer or monomer is premixed with 1 to 90% by weight of said porous media to form a premix composition before adding from 0 to 90% by weight of said polyvinyl acetate polymer or copolymer, from 0 to 20% by weight of said polyvinyl alcohol polymer or copolymer, from 0 to 60% by weight of said polyurethane polymer, from 0 to 60% by weight of said acrylic polymer, and from 10 to 90% by weight of said water.

18. The process of claim 17, wherein said porous media is activated carbon particles or zeolite.

19. The process of claim 18, wherein said activated particles are in the form of powder, beads, granules or nanotubes.

20. The process of claim 17, wherein said porous media is a combination of activated carbon and zeolite.

21. The process of claim 17, wherein said laminate composition is heated at a temperature in the range of between 35 to 90°

C.

22. The process of claim 21, wherein said laminate composition is heated at a temperature in the range of between 50 to 60°

C.

23. The process of claim 17, wherein said laminated support is cured at a temperature in the range of 130 and 200°

C.

24. The process of claim 23, wherein said laminated support is cured at a temperature in the range of 140 to 160°

C.

25. The process of claim 17, wherein said solid support is selected from the group consisting of ePTFE, polyurethane, polyamide polyester, and a blend of two or more thereof.

26. The process of claim 17, further comprising the step of:

e) securing said laminated support to a second solid support.

27. The process of claim 26, wherein said second solid support is selected from the group consisting of ePTFE, polyurethane, polyamide polyester, and a blend of two or more thereof.

28. The process of claim 27, wherein said second solid support is secured to the laminated support by adhesive means.

29. The process of claim 17, wherein said aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer is replaced by a vinyl amine and polyvinyl alcohol copolymer.

30. A method of preparing a laminated support comprising a carbon fabric, wherein said method comprises the steps:

a) mixing together from 1 to 95% by weight of said carbon fabric, from 2 to 60% by weight of an aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer or monomer, from 0 to 90% by weight of a polyvinyl acetate polymer or copolymer, from 0 to 20% by weight of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer or copolymer, from 0 to 60% by weight of a polyurethane polymer, from 0 to 60% by weight of an acrylic polymer, and from 10 to 90% by weight of water at a temperature between 25 to 50°

C.;

b) adding from 0 to 10% by weight of a surfactant agent, from 0 to 10% by weight of an epoxy resin or of a crosslinking agent, from 0 to 5% by weight of one or more metal salts or oxides, and from 0 to 10% by weight of a defoamer agent to yield a laminated support; and

,

c) curing said laminated support at a temperature in the range of 100 and 220°

C.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein said laminated support is cured at a temperature in the range of 130 and 200°

C.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein said laminated support is cured at a temperature in the range of 140 to 160°

C.

33. The method of claim 30, wherein said solid support is selected from the group consisting of ePTFE, polyurethane, polyamide polyester, and a blend of two or more thereof.

34. The method of claim 30 further comprising the step of:

d) securing said laminated support to a second solid support.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein said second solid support is selected from the group consisting of ePTFE, polyurethane, polyamide polyester, and a blend of two or more thereof.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein said second solid support is secured to said laminated support by adhesive means.

37. The method of claim 30, wherein said aliphatic amine or hydrophilic amine polymer is replaced by a vinyl amine and polyvinyl alcohol copolymer.
