Abstract

A method of shutting down a message routing component that has stored thereon outgoing messages that are destined for a communications device, the shutting down method including storing selected messages from the outgoing messages to a persistent storage. Also a system for routing messages, including: a persistent storage; and a message routing component having a memory for storing outgoing messages that are destined for a communications device, the message routing component being configured to store selected messages from the outgoing messages to the persistent storage when shutting down.

Claims

1. A method of shutting down a message routing component that has stored thereon outgoing messages that are destined for a communications device, the shutting down method comprising storing selected messages from the outgoing messages to a persistent storage.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the message routing component has stored thereon incoming messages from the communications device that are destined for a further device, the shutting down method comprising storing selected messages from the incoming messages to the persistent storage.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the outgoing messages include email messages.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the outgoing messages include one or more status messages indicating statuses of one or more email messages previously sent from the communications device.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the outgoing messages include data packets.

6. The method of claim 1 comprising, prior to storing the selected messages, selecting the selected messages from the outgoing messages based on predetermined criteria.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the predetermined criteria are biased to select messages required to be sent by the message routing component to avoid an incorrect determination by the communications device of the status of a message sent therefrom.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the predetermined criteria includes that the outgoing message is a status message.

9. The method of claim 6 comprising, prior to selecting the selected messages, monitoring for one or more conditions indicating an impending failure of the message routing component and then selecting the selected messages if the one or more conditions indicate an impending failure.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the one or more conditions includes a level of memory usage by the message routing component.

11. The method of claim 6 comprising, prior to selecting the selected messages, receiving an instruction to shut down the message routing component and then selecting the selected messages once the instruction is received.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the persistent storage is connected to the message routing component by a network.

13. A system for routing messages, comprising:

a persistent storage; and

a message routing component having a memory for storing outgoing messages that are destined for a communications device, the message routing component being configured to store selected messages from the outgoing messages to the persistent storage when shutting down.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the message routing component has stored thereon incoming messages from the communications device that are destined for a further device, the message routing component being configured to store selected messages from the incoming messages to the persistent storage when shutting down.

15. The system of claim 13 wherein the message routing component is configured to select the selected messages from the outgoing messages based on predetermined criteria.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the predetermined criteria are biased to select messages required to be sent by the message routing component to avoid an incorrect determination by the communications device of the status of a message sent therefrom.

17. The system of claim 15 wherein the message routing component is configured to monitor for one or more conditions indicating an impending failure of the message routing component and then select and store the selected messages after the one or more conditions indicate an impending failure.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the one or more conditions includes a level of memory usage by the message routing component.

19. The system of claim 13 including a network connecting the persistent storage to the message routing component.

20. The system of claim 13 wherein the persistent storage and the message routing component are implemented by a common computer.
