Abstract

A method of measuring an analyte in a biological fluid comprises applying an excitation signal having a DC component and an AC component. The AC and DC responses are measured; a corrected DC response is determined using the AC response; and a concentration of the analyte is determined based upon the corrected DC response. Other methods and devices are disclosed.

Claims

1. A method for detecting an abused sensor adapted for determining a concentration of a medically significant component of a biological fluid, comprising the steps of:

a) applying a signal having an AC component to the sensor;

b) measuring an AC response to the signal; and

c) using the AC response to determine if the sensor is abused.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein steps (a), (b) and (c) are performed before application of the biological fluid to the sensor.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the AC response comprises an admittance.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the signal is an AC signal.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the AC response comprises magnitude information.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the AC component of the signal has a frequency not less than 1 Hz and not greater than 20 kHz.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the biological fluid is blood.

8. A method for detecting an abused sensor adapted for determining a concentration of a medically significant component of a biological fluid, the sensor comprising a reagent layer, the method comprising the steps of:

a) applying a signal having an AC component to the sensor;

b) measuring an AC response to the signal; and

c) using the AC response to determine if the reagent layer of the sensor is abused.

9. A method for detecting an abused sensor adapted for determining a concentration of a medically significant component of a biological fluid, the sensor comprising a reagent layer, the method comprising the steps of:

a) applying a signal having an AC component across the reagent layer on the sensor;

b) measuring an AC response to the signal; and

c) using the AC response to determine if the reagent layer of the sensor is abused.

10. A method for detecting an abused sensor adapted for determining a concentration of a medically significant component of a biological fluid, comprising the steps of:

d) applying a signal having an AC component to the sensor;

e) measuring an AC response to the signal; and

f) using the AC response to determine if the sensor has been mis-dosed, has been previously used, or has degraded enzymes.

11. A method for detecting an abused sensor adapted for determining a concentration of a medically significant component of a biological fluid, comprising the steps of:

g) applying a signal having an AC component to the sensor;

h) measuring an AC response to the signal; and

i) using the AC response to conduct a test that is operative to determine if the sensor has been mis-dosed, has been previously used, or has degraded enzymes.
