1. A method comprising:
- inducing distortions on one or more communication signals traversing multiple segments of a network, wherein a unique signal distortion is induced for each of the multiple segments;
detecting the distortions on the one or more communication signals; and
determining on which of the multiple segments each of the one or more communication signals traversed based on the detected distortions.

Abstract
Methods and systems are provided in which a network induces different distortions in signals traversing different segments of the network. The distortions may be used to identify locations on the network of devices that transmit and receive the signals. The distortions may be reflected in equalization coefficients programmed into transmitting or receiving devices, which may be used to pre or post filter the signals to compensate for the distortions.

8. A system comprising:
-
a network comprising multiple segments configured to convey communication signals between two points along the network; and electrical circuits configured to induce distortions in the communication signals traversing the network such that the distortions uniquely identify which of the multiple segments the communication signals have traversed. - View Dependent Claims (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)

15. A method comprising:
-
inducing a signal distortion on a particular path of multiple paths of a network; receiving baseline values and subsequent values of adaptive equalization parameters of a device connected to the network, wherein the baseline values were adapted to the network before the inducing of the signal distortion and the subsequent values were adapted to the network during the inducing of the signal distortion; and determining that the device exchanges communication signals over the particular path on which the signal distortion is induced based on changes between the baseline and subsequent values. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24)
