Abstract

Deterioration of a cable, that connects a battery to an industrial vehicle, is detected by an electronic controller. An electrical parameter, such as voltage, is measured proximate to a connection of the cable to the battery, thereby producing a first measurement. The same electrical parameter also is measured proximate to a connection of the cable to the industrial vehicle, thereby producing a second measurement. The first and second measurements are received at the electronic controller which uses those measurements to produce an indication of deterioration of the cable.

Claims

1. A method for detecting deterioration of a cable that connects a battery to an industrial vehicle, wherein one of the industrial vehicle and the battery includes an electronic controller, said method comprising:

measuring an electrical parameter proximate to a first connection of the cable to the battery, thereby producing a first measurement;

measuring the electrical parameter proximate to a second connection of the cable to the industrial vehicle, thereby producing a second measurement;

receiving the first and second measurements at the electronic controller; and

in response to the first measurement and the second measurement, the electronic controller producing an indication of deterioration of the cable.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the electrical parameter is electric current flowing through the cable.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 wherein the electrical parameter is voltage across two conductors of the cable.

4. The method as recited in claim 3 further comprising:

measuring electric current flowing through the cable; and

determining resistance of the cable in response to measurements of the voltage and the electric current.

5. The method as recited in claim 3 further comprising:

measuring electric current flowing through the cable; and

determining power loss in the cable in response to measurements of the voltage and the electric current.

The method as recited in claim 1 wherein receiving the first and second measurements at the electronic controller comprises transmitting one of the first measurement and second measurement through a wire of the cable through which electric current from the battery flows to operate a motor on the industrial vehicle.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 altering operation of the industrial vehicle in response to the an indication of deterioration of the cable.

8. A method for detecting deterioration of a cable that has a first end connected to a battery and a second end connected to an industrial vehicle, wherein one of the industrial vehicle and the battery includes an electronic controller, the method comprising:

measuring voltage across two conductors of the cable proximate to the first end of the cable, thereby producing a first voltage measurement;

measuring voltage across two conductors of the cable proximate to the second end of the cable, thereby producing a second voltage measurement;

measuring electric current flowing through the cable, thereby producing a current measurement; and

in response to the first voltage measurement, the second voltage measurement, and the current measurement, the electronic controller producing an indication of deterioration of the cable.

9. The method as recited in claim 8 further comprising determining resistance of the cable in response to measurements of the voltage and the electric current.

10. The method as recited in claim 8 further comprising determining power loss in the cable in response to measurements of the voltage and the electric current.

11. The method as recited in claim 8 further comprising transmitting one of the first voltage measurement and second voltage measurement through a wire of the cable through which electric current from the battery flows to operate a motor on the industrial vehicle.
