Abstract

An autonomous floor cleaning robot includes a transport drive and control system arranged for autonomous movement of the robot over a floor for performing cleaning operations. The robot chassis carries a first cleaning zone comprising cleaning elements arranged to suction loose particulates up from the cleaning surface and a second cleaning zone comprising cleaning elements arraigned to apply a cleaning fluid onto the surface and to thereafter collect the cleaning fluid up from the surface after it has been used to clean the surface. The robot chassis carries a supply of cleaning fluid and a waste container for storing waste materials collected up from the cleaning surface.

13. A surface treatment robot comprising:

a robot body having a forward and a rear end, and a fore-aft axis defined therebetween;

right and left drive modules, each drive module comprising

a cup-shaped wheel having an outer diameter,

an annular tire having an outer diameter and an inner diameter, the inner diameter fitting over the outer diameter of the cup-shaped wheel; and

a scrubbing element disposed along a cleaning width;

wherein the right and left drive modules are disposed aft of the scrubbing element as the robot travels along the cleaning surface in a forward direction and the cleaning robot has a mass of less than about 10 kg.

14. The surface treatment robot of claim 13, wherein the each tire has a coefficient of traction between 0.25 to 0.47.

15. The surface treatment robot of claim 13, wherein each tire has a radial thickness of about 1.5 mm to about 4.5 mm.

16. A surface treatment robot comprising:

a robot body having a forward and a rear end, and a fore-aft axis defined therebetween;

right and left drive modules, each drive module comprising

a wheel having an outer diameter,

an annular tire having an outer diameter and an inner diameter, the inner diameter fitting over the outer diameter of the wheel; and

a scrubbing element disposed along a cleaning width;

wherein the right and left drive modules are disposed aft of the scrubbing element as the robot travels along the cleaning surface in a forward direction and the cleaning robot has a mass of less than about 10 kg.

17. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein the scrubbing element is configured to support a wipe cloth in contact with the cleaning surface as the robot moves across the cleaning surface.

18. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein the scrubbing element is in contact with the cleaning surface.

19. The surface treatment robot of claim 18, wherein the scrubbing element creates an average drag force along the cleaning surface of up to about 40% of the weight of the robot.

20. The surface treatment robot of claim 19, wherein each tire supports no more than 4 kg and the diameter of each wheel is about 3 cm to 20 cm.

21. The surface treatment robot of claim 19, wherein the drive modules provide a thrust of about 150% or more of the average drag force on the robot.

22. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein at least a portion of the cleaning width is proximate to a circumferential edge of the robot body.

23. The surface treatment robot of claim 22, wherein each wheel is proximate to a circumferential edge of the robot body.

24. The surface treatment robot of claim 22, wherein the cleaning width extends substantially parallel to an axis transverse to the fore-aft axis, the right and left wheels supported to rotate about a common drive axis substantially parallel to the transverse axis.

25. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein each tire is bonded to the outer diameter of each respective wheel.

26. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein each tire is a closed cell foam tire having cell sizes of about 20 microns to about 400 microns.

27. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein the outer diameter of each tire defines a pattern of thin grooves.

28. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein the each tire has a coefficient of traction between 0.25 to 0.47.

29. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein each tire has a radial thickness of about 1.5 mm to about 4.5 mm.

30. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein the scrubbing element is movable with respect to the cleaning surface and with respect to the robot body.

31. The surface treatment robot of claim 30, wherein the relative motion between the scrubbing element and the robot body is linear.

32. The surface treatment robot of claim 16, wherein each wheel is biased to move toward the cleaning surface when the wheel is lifted from the cleaning surface.

33. A surface treatment robot comprising:

a robot body having a forward and a rear end, and a fore-aft axis defined therebetween;

right and left drive modules, each drive module comprising

a wheel having an outer diameter,

an annular tire having an outer diameter and an inner diameter, the inner diameter fitting over the outer diameter of the wheel, and the annular tire having a Shore hardness less than the wheel; and

a scrubbing element disposed along a cleaning width;

wherein the right and left drive modules are disposed aft of the scrubbing element as the robot travels along the cleaning surface in a forward direction and the cleaning robot has a mass of less than about 10 kg.

34. The surface treatment robot of claim 33, wherein the wheel is plastic and the tire has a post-foamed hardness of about 69 to 75 Shore 00.
