Abstract

A game to be modified in accordance with the invention involves a first random outcome and a second random outcome that are combined according to game rules to produce a game outcome. The game is administered by receiving a player request for a specific entry, the specific entry replacing one of the random outcomes and being selected from a finite set of possibilities not determined by chance. The requested specific entry affects the probable outcome of the game. The specific entry is combined with the remaining one of the random outcomes according to the game rules to determine the game outcome. According to one embodiment, the specific entry may be a score such as 18 which replaces the player'"'"'s hand in the game of blackjack.

Claims

1. A gaming system comprising:

a display device;

an input device;

a processor; and

a memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to operate with the display device and the input device to, for a play of a game;

(a) cause at least two, but less than all, of a plurality of reels to each display one of a plurality of symbols to form a partial symbol combination;

(b) determine a wager amount based, at least in part, on an evaluation of the displayed partial symbol combination;

(c) enable a player to place the determined wager amount; and

(d) after the player places the determined wager amount;

(i) for each of the remaining reels not displaying one of the plurality of symbols to form the partial symbol combination, cause said remaining reel to display a randomly generated symbol of the plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said displayed partial symbol combination forming a complete symbol combination,

(ii) determine any awards associated with the formed complete symbol combination, said determination based, at least on part, on an evaluation of the formed complete symbol combination, and

(iii) cause any determined awards to be provided to the player.

2. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein:

(i) if a first partial symbol combination associated with a first average expected payout is displayed, the plurality of instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to determine a first wager amount based, at least on part, on said evaluation of the first partial symbol combination, and

(ii) if a second, different partial symbol combination associated with a second, greater average expected payout is displayed, the plurality of instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to determine a second, greater wager amount based, at least in part, on said evaluation of the second, different partial symbol combination.

3. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to modify a probability of at least one of the remaining reels displaying at least one symbol of the plurality of symbols.

4. The gaming system of claim 1, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to modify a payout associated with the formed complete symbol combination.

5. A gaming system comprising:

a display device;

an input device;

a processor; and

a memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to operate with the display device and the input device to, for a play of a game;

(a) for each of at least one first reel of a plurality of reels, cause said first reel to display one of a plurality of symbols along a payline;

(b) determine a wager amount associated with said payline, said determined wager amount being based, at least in part, on an evaluation of the at least one symbol displayed by the at least one first reel along said payline;

(c) enable a player to place the determined wager amount; and

(d) after the player places the determined wager amount;

(i) for each of at least one second reel of the plurality of reels, cause said second reel to display a randomly generated symbol along said payline,

(ii) determine any awards associated with the symbols displayed along said payline, said determination based, at least in part, on an evaluation of the symbols displayed along said payline, and

(iii) cause any determined awards to be provided to the player.

6. The gaming system of claim 5, wherein:

(i) if at least a first symbol associated with a first average expected payout is displayed along said payline, the plurality of instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to determine a first wager amount based, at least on part, on said evaluation of the first symbol displayed along said payline, and

(ii) if a second, different symbol associated with a second, greater average expected payout is displayed along said payline, the plurality of instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to determine a second, greater wager amount based, at least on part, on said evaluation of the second, different symbol displayed along the payline.

7. The gaming system of claim 5, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to modify a probability of said at least one second reel displaying at least one symbol of the plurality of symbols.

8. The gaming system of claim 5, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to modify a payout associated with a plurality of displayed symbols.

9. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising:

(a) causing at least two, but less than all, of a plurality of reels to each display one of a plurality of symbols to form a partial symbol combination;

(b) causing at least one processor to execute a plurality of instructions to determine a wager amount based, at least in part, on an evaluation of the displayed partial symbol combination;

(c) enabling a player to place the determined wager amount; and

(d) after the player places the determined wager amount;

(i) for each of the remaining reels not displaying one of the plurality of symbols to form the partial symbol combination, causing said remaining reel to display a randomly generated symbol of the plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said displayed partial symbol combination forming a complete symbol combination,

(ii) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine any awards associated with the formed complete symbol combination, said determination based, at least on part, on an evaluation of the formed complete symbol combination, and

(iii) causing any determined awards to be provided to the player.

10. The method of claim 9, which includes:

(i) if a first partial symbol combination associated with a first average expected payout is displayed, causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine a first wager amount based, at least on part, on said evaluation of the first partial symbol combination, and

(ii) if a second, different partial symbol combination associated with a second, greater average expected payout is displayed, causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to determine a second, greater wager amount based, at least in part, on said evaluation of the second, different partial symbol combination.

11. The method of claim 9, which includes causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to modify a probability of at least one of the remaining reels displaying at least one symbol of the plurality of symbols.

12. The method of claim 9, which includes causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to modify a payout associated with the formed complete symbol combination.

13. The method of claim 9, which is provided through a data network.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the data network is the internet.

15. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising:

(a) for each of at least one first reel of a plurality of reels, causing said first reel to display one of a plurality of symbols along a payline;

(b) causing at least one processor to execute a plurality of instructions to determine a wager amount associated with said payline, said determined wager amount being based, at least in part, on an evaluation of the at least one symbol displayed by the at least one first reel along said payline;

(c) enabling a player to place the determined wager amount; and

(d) after the player places the determined wager amount;

(i) for each of at least one second reel of the plurality of reels, causing said second reel to display a randomly generated symbol along said payline,

(ii) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine any awards associated with the symbols displayed along said payline, said determination based, at least in part, on an evaluation of the symbols displayed along said payline, and

(iii) causing any determined awards to be provided to the player.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein:

(i) if at least a first symbol associated with a first average expected payout is displayed along said payline, causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine a first wager amount based, at least on part, on said evaluation of the first symbol displayed along said payline, and

(ii) if a second, different symbol associated with a second, greater average expected payout is displayed along said payline, causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine a second, greater wager amount based, at least on part, on said evaluation of the second, different symbol displayed along the payline.

17. The method of claim 15, which includes causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to modify a probability of said at least one second reel displaying at least one symbol of the plurality of symbols.

18. The method of claim 15, which includes causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to modify a payout associated with a plurality of displayed symbols.

19. The method of claim 15, which is provided through a data network.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the data network is the internet.

21. A gaming system comprising:

a display device;

an input device;

a processor; and

a memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to operate with the display device and the input device to;

(a) enable a player to place one of;

(i) a first wager amount, said first wager amount associated with a first partial symbol combination including at least two of a plurality of symbols and having a first average expected payout, and

(ii) a second, greater wager amount, said second wager amount associated with a second, different partial symbol combination including at least a different two of the plurality of symbols and having a second, greater average expected payout;

(b) if the player placed the first wager amount;

(i) cause at least two, but less than all, of a plurality of reels to display the at least two symbols of the first partial symbol combination,

(ii) cause at least another one of the plurality of reels to each display a randomly generated symbol of a plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said at least two symbols of the first partial symbol combination forming a first symbol combination,

(iii) determine any awards associated with the formed first symbol combination, and

(iv) cause any determined awards associated with the formed first symbol combination to be provided to the player; and

(c) if the player placed the second, different wager amount;

(i) cause at least two, but less than all, of the plurality of reels to display the at least two symbols of the second partial symbol combination,

(ii) cause said at least another one of the plurality of reels to each display a randomly generated symbol of the plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said at least two symbols of the second partial symbol combination forming a second, different symbol combination,

(iii) determine any awards associated with the formed second symbol combination, and

(iv) cause any determined awards associated with the formed second symbol combination to be provided to the player.

22. The gaming system of claim 21, wherein when executed by the processor, the plurality of instructions cause the processor to enable the player to place a third wager amount, said third wager amount being greater than the first and second wager amounts and being associated with a third partial symbol combination including at least another two symbols of the plurality of symbols and having a third average expected payout greater than the first and second average expected payouts, and if the player placed the third wager amount:

(i) cause at least two, but less than all, of the plurality of reels to display the at least two symbols of the third partial symbol combination,

(ii) cause said at least another one of the plurality of reels to each display a randomly generated symbol of the plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said at least two symbols of the third partial symbol combination forming a third symbol combination different than the first and second symbol combinations,

(iii) determine any awards associated with the formed third symbol combination, and

(iv) cause any determined awards associated with the formed third symbol combination to be provided to the player.

23. A gaming system comprising:

a display device;

an input device;

a processor; and

a memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to operate with the display device and the input device to;

(a) accept a wager from a player to start a play of a game;

(b) before any symbols which are usable in the play of the game are displayed in the play of the game;

(i) display a plurality of different selectable target symbol combinations to the player; and

(ii) enable the player to select one of said different selectable target symbol combinations;

(c) after the player has selected one of said different selectable target symbol combinations, display an initial plurality of symbols associated with the selected target symbol combination;

(d) cause at least one reel to display at least one randomly generated additional symbol, said displayed at least one additional symbol and the displayed initial plurality of symbols forming a complete symbol combination;

(e) determine if the complete symbol combination matches said selected target symbol combination; and

(f) cause an award to be provided to the player if said complete symbol combination matches said selected target symbol combination.

24. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising:

(a) enabling a player to place one of;

(i) a first wager amount, said first wager amount associated with a first partial symbol combination including at least two of a plurality of symbols and having a first average expected payout, and

(ii) a second, greater wager amount, said second wager amount associated with a second, different partial symbol combination including at least a different two of the plurality of symbols and having a second, greater average expected payout;

(b) if the player placed the first wager amount;

(i) causing at least two, but less than all, of a plurality of reels to display the at least two symbols of the first partial symbol combination,

(ii) causing at least another one of the plurality of reels to each display a randomly generated symbol of a plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said at least two symbols of the first partial symbol combination forming a first symbol combination,

(iii) causing at least one processor to execute a plurality of instructions to determine any awards associated with the formed first symbol combination, and

(iv) causing any determined awards associated with the formed first symbol combination to be provided to the player; and

(c) if the player placed the second, different wager amount;

(i) causing at least two, but less than all, of the plurality of reels to display the at least two symbols of the second partial symbol combination,

(ii) causing said at least another one of the plurality of reels to each display a randomly generated symbol of the plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said at least two symbols of the second partial symbol combination forming a second, different symbol combination,

(iii) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine any awards associated with the formed second symbol combination, and

(iv) causing any determined awards associated with the formed second symbol combination to be provided to the player.

25. The method of claim 24, which includes:

enabling the player to place a third wager amount, said third wager amount being greater than the first and second wager amounts and being associated with a third partial symbol combination including at least another two symbols of the plurality of symbols and having a third average expected payout greater than the first and second average expected payouts, and

if the player placed the third wager amount;

(i) causing at least two, but less than all, of the plurality of reels to display the at least two symbols of the third partial symbol combination,

(ii) causing said at least another one of the plurality of reels to each display a randomly generated symbol of the plurality of symbols, said displayed randomly generated symbol and said at least two symbols of the third partial symbol combination forming a third symbol combination different than the first and second symbol combinations,

(iii) causing the at least one processor to execute the plurality of instructions to determine any awards associated with the formed third symbol combination, and

(iv) causing any determined awards associated with the formed third symbol combination to be provided to the player.

26. The method of claim 24, which is provided through a data network.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the data network is the internet.

28. A method of operating a gaming system, said method comprising:

(a) accepting a wager from a player to start a play of a game;

(b) before any symbols which are usable in the play of the game are displayed in the play of the game;

(i) causing at least one display device to display a plurality of different selectable target symbol combinations to the player; and

(ii) enabling the player to select one of said different selectable target symbol combinations;

(c) after the player has selected one of said different selectable target symbol combinations, causing the at least one display device to display an initial plurality of symbols associated with the selected target symbol combination;

(d) causing at least one reel to display at least one randomly generated additional symbol, said displayed at least one additional symbol and the displayed initial plurality of symbols forming a complete symbol combination;

(e) causing at least one processor to execute a plurality of instructions to determine if the complete symbol combination matches said selected target symbol combination; and

(f) causing an award to be provided to the player if said complete symbol combination matches said selected target symbol combination.

29. The method of claim 28, which is provided through a data network.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the data network is the internet.
