Abstract
A goniometer comprises a first arm (2), a second arm (4) and a connecting portion (6) pivotally connecting the first arm (2) to the second arm (4) about a pivot axis (7). An instrument connector (8) is coupled to the first arm (2) arranged to couple to a surgical instrument (10). A method of aligning a surgical instrument (10) using the goniometer is also disclosed.

a first arm; a second arm; a connecting portion pivotally connecting the first arm to the second arm about a pivot axis; and an instrument connector coupled to the first arm for coupling to a surgical instrument;

setting an angle subtended at a pivot axis between first and second arms of a goniometer to a predetermined angle, the first and second arms being pivotally connected at a connecting portion, the connecting portion incorporating an aperture aligned with the pivot axis, the goniometer comprising an instrument connector coupled to the first arm; coupling the instrument connector to a surgical instrument; observing an anatomical feature through the aperture; adjusting the position of the connecting portion until the pivot axis passes through an anatomical feature; and rotating the goniometer about the pivot axis until the second arm is aligned with the anatomical axis. - View Dependent Claims (39, 40)

38. A method of aligning a surgical instrument with an anatomical axis of an anatomical feature, the method comprising steps of:

setting an angle subtended at a pivot axis between first and second arms of a goniometer to a predetermined angle, the first and second arms being pivotally connected at a connecting portion, the connecting portion incorporating an aperture aligned with the pivot axis, the goniometer comprising a rod having a central portion received within the aperture, the central portion being slidable within the aperture and thereby aligned with the pivot axis, and an instrument connector coupled to the first arm; coupling the instrument connector to a surgical instrument; adjusting the position of the connecting portion until the rod extends toward the anatomical feature; and rotating the goniometer about the pivot axis until the second arm is aligned with the anatomical axis.
