Abstract

A replacement device for resurfacing a joint surface of a femur and a method of making and installing such a device is provided. The custom replacement device is designed to substantially fit the trochlear groove surface, of an individual femur. Thereby creating a “customized” replacement device for that individual femur and maintaining the original kinematics of the joint. The replacement device may be defined by four boundary points, and a first and a second surface. The first of four points is 3 to 5 mm from the point of attachment of the anterior cruciate ligament to the femur. The second point is near the bottom edge of the end of the natural articulatar cartilage. The third point is at the top ridge of the right condyle and the fourth point at the top ridge of the left condyle of the femur. The top surface is designed so as to maintain centrally directed tracking of the patella perpendicular to the plane established by the distal end of the femoral condyles and aligned with the center of the femoral head.

Claims

1. A marking template for assisting in the resurfacing of an articulating or joint surface of a bone of a patient and the placement of a prosthesis into said articulating or joint surface, comprising a solid body having:

a top surface;

a bottom surface, the bottom surface having a shape custom formed to substantially match and fit, with no or minimal removal of existing bone, the natural contour of the articulating or joint surface;

the solid body having an opening extending therethrough from the top surface to the bottom surface, the bottom surface configured to be complimentary to the articulating or joint surface and the opening adapted to guide an instrument through the body at a predetermined location along the articulating or joint surface following placement of the bottom surface thereon.

2. A system for installing a replacement device into an articulating or joint surface of an individual patient'"'"'s bone, the system comprising:

a marking template having a top surface and a bottom surface, the bottom surface having a shape custom formed to substantially match and fit, with no or minimal removal of existing bone, the natural contour of the articulating or joint surface, the marking template having an opening extending therethrough from the top to the bottom surface, the opening adapted to guide an instrument through the marking template at a predetermined location along the articulating or joint surface following placement of the bottom surface in complementary relation against the articulating or joint surface;

an apparatus to prepare the articulating or joint surface to receive a replacement device when guided by said marking template; and

a replacement device, wherein the replacement device has a bottom surface having a shape substantially matching the articulating or joint surface, said replacement device capable of being installed into the patient'"'"'s articulating or joint surface when said surface has been prepared by said apparatus.

3. A system according to claim 2, wherein the replacement device has a top side substantially tracking the articulating portion of an opposing side of the articulating or joint surface.

4. A system according to claim 3, further including bone cement between the replacement device and the articulating or joint surface to bond the replacement device to said surface.

5. A system according to claim 4, further including a bone ingrowth surface between the replacement device and the articulating or joint surface to bond the replacement device to said surface.

6. A device for facilitating the implantation of a prosthesis into a femur of an individual patient, comprising:

a body having a top surface and a bottom surface, said bottom surface having a shape custom-formed to substantially match and fit a non-resected natural contour of an individual patient'"'"'s femur;

said body having one or more openings extending between said top and bottom surfaces, said openings adapted to guide an apparatus through said body at a predetermined location along the distal end of the femur when said template'"'"'s bottom surface is positioned in complementary relation against the distal end of the patient'"'"'s femur, said apparatus capable of preparing the distal end of said femur to receive a prosthesis.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein said apparatus is capable of forming openings on the distal end of said femur which receive complimentary pins on said prosthesis when said prosthesis is implanted into said femur.

8. A system for implanting a prosthesis into the distal end of an individual patient'"'"'s femur, the system comprising:

a device having a top surface and a bottom surface, the bottom surface having a shape custom-formed to substantially match and fit a non resected natural contour of an individual patient'"'"'s femur, said marking template having one or more holes and/or slots extending between said top and bottom surfaces, said holes and/or slots adapted to guide an apparatus through the device at a predetermined location along the distal end of the femur when said bottom surface is positioned in complementary relation against the distal end of the patient'"'"'s femur;

an apparatus capable of preparing the distal end of said femur to receive a prosthesis when guided by said holes and/or slots in said device; and

a prosthesis capable of being implanted into the distal end of said femur when said distal end has been prepared by said apparatus.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein said apparatus is capable of forming openings on the distal end of said femur.

10. The system of claim 9, where said prosthesis has a bottom surface and one or more pins protruding therefrom, said pins adapted to be inserted into said openings on the distal end of the patient'"'"'s femur formed by said apparatus.
