Abstract

A system, method, and apparatus are disclosed for dressing a wound. The apparatus comprises a liquid and gas permeable transmission layer, an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer overlying the transmission layer, a gas impermeable cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising a first orifice, wherein the cover layer is moisture vapor permeable.

Claims

1. A wound treatment apparatus comprising:

a wound dressing comprising;

a transmission layer comprising a 3D knitted or fabric material configured to remain open upon application of negative pressure to the wound dressing;

an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer overlying the transmission layer;

a cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising an orifice, wherein the cover layer is moisture vapor permeable;

a pump; and

a suction port for applying negative pressure to the wound dressing for the application of topical negative pressure at a wound site, the suction port comprising;

a connector portion for connecting the suction port to the pump;

a sealing surface for sealing the suction port to the cover layer of the wound dressing; and

a liquid impermeable gas permeable filter element arranged to prevent a liquid from entering the connector portion.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a wound contact layer underlying the transmission layer.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transmission layer comprises a 3D polyester fabric layer.

4. The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the 3D polyester fabric layer comprises a top textured polyester layer, a bottom flat polyester layer and a third fiber layer sandwiched therebetween.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the transmission layer comprises a first fabric layer and a second fabric layer and a plurality of spacer elements extending therebetween.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the absorbent layer has an aperture configured to permit the suction port to contact the transmission layer.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction port further comprises spacer elements configured to prevent the suction port from contacting the transmission layer.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction port comprises a wound facing portion, and the absorbent layer further comprises an aperture sized to be at least as large as the diameter of the wound facing portion of the suction port.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one baffle element.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the baffle element has a depth greater than the depth of the transmission layer.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising one additional suction port.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a fluid communication passage joining the suction port to the one additional suction port.

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the suction port is positioned over an aperture in the absorbent layer, the suction port and the aperture being positioned closer to one side of the dressing than to an opposite side of the dressing.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the absorbent layer comprises a superabsorber.

15. A method for the treatment of a wound, comprising:

providing a wound dressing comprising;

a transmission layer comprising a 3D knitted or fabric material;

an absorbent layer for absorbing wound exudate, the absorbent layer overlying the transmission layer;

a cover layer overlying the absorbent layer and comprising an orifice, wherein the cover layer is moisture vapor permeable;

positioning the dressing over a wound site to form a sealed cavity over the wound site; and

applying negative pressure to the wound site to draw fluid through the transmission layer into the absorbent layer.

The method of claim 15, wherein applying negative pressure to the wound site comprises applying negative pressure to the wound dressing from a pump through a suction port applied to an orifice in the cover layer, the suction port comprising a filter element arranged to prevent liquid from entering the pump.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the wound dressing further comprises a wound contact layer underlying the transmission layer, and applying negative pressure to the wound site draws fluid through the wound contact layer, through the transmission layer and into the absorbent material.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the transmission layer remains open upon application of negative pressure in the range of −

20 mm Hg to −

200 mm Hg.

19. The method of claim 15, further comprising packing the wound site with foam or gauze prior to positioning the wound dressing over the wound site.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein the absorbent material absorbs more than 15 times its own weight in liquid.
