Abstract

A method of gesture based authentication for wireless payment by a mobile electronic device is disclosed. In one aspect, the method includes determining that an applied gesture above a touch receptive area of a target device is associated with a user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the mobile electronic device. The method may include comparing the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of a mobile electronic device with a user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the mobile electronic device. If the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of a mobile electronic device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the mobile electronic device, the method includes permitting the wireless transfer of protected payment data resident on the mobile electronic device to an external reader using near-field communication technology.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

determining that an applied gesture above a touch receptive input area of a target device is associated with a user-defined payment gesture;

comparing the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device with the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device;

permitting the wireless transmission of protected payment data resident on the target device to an initiator device if the applied gesture on the touch receptive input area of the target device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device; and

denying the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device if the applied gesture on the touch receptive input area of the target device does not match the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device by magnetic induction between a loop antenna located within an electromagnetic field of the target device and an another loop antenna located within an another electromagnetic field of the initiator device such that a strong inductive effect and a strong capacitive effect are present in a near field region of an electromagnetic radiation that emanates from the loop antenna and the another loop antenna forming an air-core transformer.

The method of claim 2 further comprising the target device operating in a passive communication state such that the initiator device provides the electromagnetic field and the target device answers by modulating the another electromagnetic field during which the target device draws its operating power from the electromagnetic field provided by the initiator device.

The method of claim 3 further comprising the target device operating in a battery-assisted passive communication state such that the initiator device provides the electromagnetic field and the target devices answers by creating its own electromagnetic field during which the target device draws its operating power from a battery.

The method of claim 4 further comprising the target device operating in an active communication state such that both the target device and the initiator device are self-powered and communicate by alternatively generating their own electromagnetic fields and deactivating their radio frequency fields before the target device transmits the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device.

The method of claim 5 further comprising the target device operating in an emulation state such that the target device permits the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device if the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising the target device operating in a reader state such that the target device reads a request from the initiator device for the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device.

The method of claim 7 further comprising the target device operating in a peer-to-peer state such that the target device reads a request from the initiator device for the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device and permits the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device if the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device.

The method of claim 8 further comprising the target device operating in a state wherein the user is permitted to select and wirelessly transmit one of a plurality of sets of protected payment data resident on the target device in response to interrogation by the initiator device if the applied gesture on the touch receptive input area of the target device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device.

The method of claim 1 wherein the target device permits entry of the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device prior to and in anticipation of a request from the initiator device for the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the initiator device is a remote computer server operating through a wide area network.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the target device is a mobile electronic device.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the initiator device is a mobile electronic device.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein an another user-defined payment gesture permits the wireless transmission of an another protected payment data to the initiator device if the applied gesture on the touch receptive input area of a target device matches an another user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device.

15. The method of claim 1 further comprising the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device, wherein the protected payment data are in the form of an encoded optical emission.

16. A method comprising:

accepting a user-defined payment gesture as an input above a touch receptive input area of a target device;

storing the user-defined payment gesture locally within the target device;

comparing an applied gesture above a touch receptive input area of the target device to the user-defined payment gesture;

permitting the wireless transmission of protected payment data resident on the target device to an initiator device if the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device; and

denying the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device to the initiator device if the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device does not match the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the user-defined payment gesture is entered above the target device prior to and in anticipation of interrogation by the initiator device.

The method of claim 16 further comprising the target device configured under a user setting such that the user is required to enter the user-defined payment gesture above the target device in response to interrogation by the initiator device for one set of parameters, while entry of the user-defined payment gesture in response to interrogation by the initiator device is not required for another set of parameters for the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device.

The method of claim 18 further comprising the target device configured under a user setting wherein the one set of parameters and the another set of parameters are a plurality of transaction amount, an application resident on the target device, the nature of the initiator device, and the identity of the initiator device.

The method of claim 16 further comprising the target device configured under a user setting such that an application resident on the target device is required to prompt the user to enter the user-defined payment gesture prior to enabling the wireless transmission of the protected payment data in response to interrogation by the initiator device while an another application resident on the target device is permitted to wirelessly transmit the protected payment data in response to interrogation by the initiator device without requiring entry of a payment gesture.

21. The method of claim 16 wherein the target device enters a state that permits a finite number of wireless transmissions of the protected payment data resident on the target device in response to interrogation by the initiator device if the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device before entering a secure state.

The method of claim 16 wherein the target device enters a state that permits for a finite time period for the wireless transmission of the protected payment data resident on the target device in response to interrogation by the initiator device if the applied gesture above the touch receptive input area of the target device matches the user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device before entering a secure state.

23. The method of claim 16 wherein a remote computer server sends a deactivating signal to the target device preventing transmission of the protected payment data in response interrogation by the initiator device if the target device is reported at least one of being lost, stolen, cloned, and otherwise compromised.

24. The method of claim 16 wherein the target device wirelessly transmits an another protected payment data to the initiator device if the applied gesture on the touch receptive input area of the target device matches an another user-defined payment gesture stored locally within the target device.
