Abstract

The invention comprises a charged particle cancer therapy system or synchrotron system using one or more switches to introduce a corresponding one or more resistors into a circuit linking a power supply to a magnet or an inductor during an applied power recovery phase between acceleration cycles of the synchrotron, which reduces time of reduction in power from an active applied power to a power suitable for use with a subsequent injection of charged particles into the synchrotron.

Claims

1. A method for use of a charged particle accelerator, comprising the steps of:

providing a synchrotron;

applying a first acceleration voltage to an inductor via an electrical circuit during an acceleration period of said synchrotron, said inductor configured to generate a magnetic field through a portion of said synchrotron;

opening a first switch in said electrical circuit to add a first resistor to said electrical circuit during a recovery time period after said acceleration period, wherein said first resistor results in a decrease of said voltage to said inductor.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

delivering at least one kilo ampere to said first resistor, wherein said first resistor comprises a resistance of at least one-tenth of an Ohm.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

opening a second switch in said electrical circuit to add a second resistor to said electrical circuit during a recovery time period after said step of opening said first switch, wherein said second resistor results in a decrease of said voltage to said inductor.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said first resistor comprises a resistance of at least one-tenth of an Ohm, wherein said second resistor comprises a resistance of at least two-tenths of an Ohm.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein electrical resistance of said second resistor is greater than electrical resistance of said first resistor.

6. The method of claim 3, said step of opening said second switch performed after a decrease in said first acceleration voltage of at least thirty percent.

7. The method of claim 3, further comprising the steps of:

closing said first switch;

closing said second switch; and

repeating, at least ten different charged particle velocities, said steps of;

said step of applying said first acceleration voltage;

said step of opening said first switch;

said step of opening said second switch;

said step of closing said first switch; and

said step of closing said second switch.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein said second resistor comprises an electrical resistance at least one hundred fifty percent of said first resistor.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

extracting a circulating charged particle beam from said synchrotron, said step of extracting comprising the steps of;

transmitting the circulating charged particle beam through an extraction material, said extraction material yielding a reduced energy charged particle beam;

applying at least five hundred volts across a first pair of blades; and

passing the reduced energy charged particle beam between said first pair of blades,

wherein said first pair of blades redirect the reduced energy charged particle beam to a deflector,

wherein said deflector yields an extracted charged particle beam.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

providing a rotatable platform, wherein charged particles extracted from said synchrotron run above said rotatable platform;

delivering the charged particles beam to a tumor;

during an irradiation period, rotating said rotatable platform to at least five irradiation positions covering at least ninety degrees of rotation of said rotatable platform; and

irradiating the tumor with the charged particles during each of said at least five irradiation positions.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising sequential steps of:

generating charged particles in an injector;

injecting the charged particles into said synchrotron;

accelerating the charged particles in said synchrotron yielding accelerated charged particles;

inducing oscillation of the accelerated charged particles yielding oscillating charged particles;

extracting the oscillating charged particles from said synchrotron using an extraction foil yielding reduced energy charged particles; and

transporting the reduced energy charged particles to a tumor.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising the steps of:

extracting charged particles from said synchrotron;

controlling an energy of the charged particles; and

controlling an intensity of the charged particles,

wherein said step of controlling said energy and said step of controlling said intensity both occur prior to the charged particles passing through an extraction magnet in said synchrotron.

13. An apparatus, comprising:

a synchrotron;

an inductor wrapped about a portion of said synchrotron;

a power supply; and

an electric circuit configured to link said power supply to said inductor, said power supply configured to deliver a first voltage at a terminus of an acceleration period to said inductor about said synchrotron,

wherein said electric circuit comprises;

at least one electric switch alternately configurable in an open position and in a closed position;

at least one resistor, said switch configured in said open position to direct current through said resistor during a recovery period following the terminus of the acceleration period.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said at least one electric switch comprises:

a first electric switch and a second electric switch, wherein said at least one resistor comprises a first resistor and a second resistor, said first electric switch configured to switch on and off current through said first resistor, said second electric switch configured to switch on and off current through said second resistor.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, said first resistor and said second resistor electrically in series.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein said at least one resistor comprises a first resistor and a second resistor, said first resistor and said second resistor electrically in parallel when said electric switch is configured in an open position.

17. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said resistor comprises a resistance in a range of one-tenth to four-tenths of an Ohm.

18. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein said synchrotron comprises multi-axis control of charged particles, said multi-axis control comprising control of:

an energy; and

an intensity,

wherein said control of said energy and said control of said intensity occurs during extraction of the charged particles from said synchrotron.

19. The apparatus of claim 13, said synchrotron comprising:

a center; and

a charged particle circulation beam path running;

about said center;

through straight sections; and

through turning sections,

wherein each of said turning sections comprises a plurality of bending magnets,

wherein said circulation beam path comprises a length of less than sixty meters, and

wherein a number of said straight sections equals a number of said turning sections.

20. The apparatus of claim 13, said synchrotron further comprising:

an extraction material;

at least a one kilovolt direct current field applied across a pair of extraction blades; and

a deflector,

said synchrotron configured to pass circulating charged particles through said extraction material resulting in a reduced energy charged particle beam,

wherein the reduced energy charged particle beam passes between said pair of extraction blades, and

wherein the direct current field redirects the reduced energy charged particle beam through said deflector,

wherein said deflector yields an extracted charged particle beam.
