Abstract

An adapter for providing a source of power to a mobile device through an industry standard port is provided. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, the adapter comprises a plug unit, a power converter, a primary connector, and an identification subsystem. The plug unit is operative to couple the adapter to a power socket and operative to receive energy from the power socket. The power converter is electrically coupled to the plug unit and is operable to regulate the received energy from the power socket and to output a power requirement to the mobile device. The primary connector is electrically coupled to the power converter and is operative to couple to the mobile device and to deliver the outputted power requirement to the mobile device. The identification subsystem is electrically coupled to the primary connector and is operative to provide an identification signal.

11. A mobile communication device, comprising:

a USB VBUS line and a USB communication path,

said device configured to draw current from the VBUS line without regard to any associated conditions specified in a USB specification.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein said associated conditions comprises a current limit.

13. The device of claim 11, wherein said current is drawn without USB enumeration.

14. The device of claim 11, wherein said current is drawn in response to an abnormal data condition on said USB communication path.

15. The device of claim 14, wherein said communication path comprises a D+ line and a D-I line.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein said abnormal data condition comprises an abnormal data line condition on said D+ line and said D−

line.

17. The device of claim 16, wherein said abnormal data line condition comprises logic high signals on said D+ and D−

lines.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein said logic high signals are greater than 2V.

19. The device of claim 12, wherein said current limit is 500 mA.

27. The device of claim 16, wherein said logic high signals are greater than 2V.

20. A mobile communication device, comprising:

a USB VBUS line and a USB communication path,

said device configured to draw power from the VBUS line without regard to any associated condition specified in USB specification.

21. The device of claim 20, wherein said associated condition comprises a current limit.

22. The device of claim 20, wherein said power is drawn without USB enumeration.

23. The device of claim 20, wherein said power is drawn in response to an abnormal data condition on said USB communication path.

24. The device of claim 23, wherein said communication path comprises a D+ line and a D−

line.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein said abnormal data condition comprises an abnormal data line condition on said D+ line and said D−

line.

26. The device of claim 25, wherein said abnormal data line condition comprises logic high signals on said D+ and D−

lines.

28. The device of claim 21, wherein said current limit is 500 mA.
