Abstract

A device obtains a geographic position of a mobile telephone. The device retrieves geographic locations associated with multiple different civic addresses from memory, and determines if the geographic position is within a certain proximity of one of the geographic locations. The device retrieves a civic address of the multiple different civic addresses, that is associated with the one of the geographic locations, from the memory for use in identifying the civic address at which the mobile telephone is located.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

obtaining a geographic position of a mobile device;

retrieving geographic locations associated with multiple different civic addresses from memory;

determining if the geographic position is within a certain proximity of one of the geographic locations; and

retrieving a civic address of the multiple different civic addresses, that is associated with the one of the geographic locations, from the memory for use in identifying the civic address at which the mobile device is located.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein each of the multiple different civic addresses comprises a street address.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein each of the multiple different civic addresses further comprises building, floor and/or room designations associated with buildings located at the street address.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the mobile device comprises a mobile appliance that includes a radio frequency wireless transceiver.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the geographic position comprises a latitude and longitude associated with a geographic location of the mobile device.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

supplying the retrieved civic address to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) for dispatching an emergency service to the retrieved civic address.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the geographic position of the mobile device is performed by, or with the assistance of, Positioning Determining Equipment (PDE) residing in a network.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the geographic position of the mobile device is performed by the mobile device.

9. A device, comprising:

a memory configured to store multiple geographic locations and corresponding civic addresses;

a processing unit configured to;

obtain a geographic position of a mobile telephone engaged in an emergency call to a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP),

determine if the geographic position is within a certain proximity to one of the multiple geographic locations,

retrieve a civic address from the memory that corresponds to one of the multiple geographic locations determined to be within the certain proximity to the geographic position of the mobile telephone, and

provide the retrieved civic address to the PSAP.

10. The device of claim 9, wherein the processor is further configured to:

provide the retrieved civic address to the PSAP via a Short Message Service (SMS) text message, an Instant Message (IM), an email, a Multimedia Message Service (MMS) message, or a pre-recorded audio recording.

11. The device of claim 10, wherein the processor is further configured to:

supply a map image, or a link to a map image, associated with the retrieved civic address to the PSAP.

12. The device of claim 9, wherein the memory is further configured to store each of the multiple geographic locations with a corresponding one of the civic addresses in a table.

13. The device of claim 9, wherein, when determining if the geographic position is within the certain proximity to the one of the multiple geographic locations, the processing unit is further configured to:

determine if the geographic position is within a distance corresponding to a proximity parameter of the one of the multiple geographic locations.

14. The device of claim 9, wherein the mobile telephone is the device.

15. The device of claim 9, wherein the device comprises a Mobile Positioning Center (MPC).

16. The device of claim 9, wherein the geographic position comprises a latitude and longitude associated with a geographic location of the mobile telephone.

17. The device of claim 9, wherein the retrieved civic address comprises a street address.

18. The device of claim 17, wherein the retrieved civic address further comprises a building, a floor and/or a room designation associated with buildings located at the street address.

19. A computer-readable medium containing instructions executable by at least one processing unit, the computer-readable medium comprising:

one or more instructions for obtaining a geographic position of a mobile device engaged in an emergency call with a Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP);

one or more instructions for determining if the geographic position is within a certain proximity to one of multiple geographic locations stored in a data table; and

one or more instructions for retrieving a street address from the data table that corresponds to one of the multiple geographic locations determined to be close to the geographic position of the mobile device; and

one or more instructions for providing the retrieved civic address to the PSAP.

20. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the one or more instructions for retrieving a street address from the data table further comprise:

one or more instructions for retrieving a building designation, a floor designation, and/or a room designation, within buildings located at the street address.

21. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, where the one or more instructions for providing the retrieved civic address to the PSAP further comprise:

one or more instructions for supplying the retrieved civic address to the PSAP via a Short Message Service (SMS) text message, an Instant Message (IM), an email, Multimedia Message Service (MMS) message, or a pre-recorded audio recording.

22. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the mobile device comprises a mobile appliance that includes a radio frequency wireless transceiver.

23. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the geographic position comprises a latitude and longitude associated with a geographic location of the mobile device.

24. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the geographic position of the mobile device is obtained from, or with the assistance of, Positioning Determining Equipment (PDE) residing in a network.

25. The computer-readable medium of claim 19, wherein the geographic position of the mobile device is obtained using a Global Positioning System (GPS) device of the mobile device.
