Abstract

A method for storing a video summary for a digital video sequence captured with a digital video capture device, comprising: capturing a digital video sequence with the digital video capture device, wherein the digital video sequence includes a plurality of video frames; storing the digital video sequence in a processor-accessible memory; identifying one or more key video snippets, each key video snippet corresponding to a set of video frames from the stored digital video sequence; assembling the key video snippets to form a video summary; and storing the video summary in a processor-accessible memory by storing metadata associated with the stored digital video sequence, wherein the metadata provides an indication of the video frames corresponding to the video summary.

Claims

1. A method for storing a video summary for a digital video sequence captured with a digital video capture device, comprising:

capturing a digital video sequence with the digital video capture device, wherein the digital video sequence includes a plurality of video frames;

storing the digital video sequence in a processor-accessible memory;

identifying one or more key video snippets, each key video snippet corresponding to a set of video frames from the stored digital video sequence;

assembling the key video snippets to form a video summary; and

storing the video summary in a processor-accessible memory by storing metadata associated with the stored digital video sequence, wherein the metadata provides an indication of the video frames corresponding to the video summary.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the stored metadata also provides an indication of the audio samples corresponding to the video summary.

3. The method of claim 1 further including storing metadata providing an indication of video transition effects applied at boundaries between the key video snippets.

4. The method of claim 1 further including storing metadata providing an indication of audio transition effects applied at boundaries between the key video snippets.

5. A system for displaying video frames corresponding to a video summary, comprising:

A softcopy display for viewing video frames; and

a processor for performing the steps of

reading data associated with a stored digital video sequence, wherein the data provides an indication of the video frames corresponding to a video summary;

extracting from the stored digital video sequence said video frames corresponding to the video summary;

displaying said video frames corresponding to the video summary on said softcopy display.

6. The system according to claim 5 wherein the step of reading data further provides an indication of the audio samples corresponding to the video summary.

7. The system according to claim 6 further including extracting from the stored digital video sequence said audio samples corresponding to the video summary.

8. The system according to claim 5 wherein the step of reading data further provides an indication of video transition effects for the video summary.

9. The system according to claim 8 wherein the step of displaying said video frames corresponding to the video summary on said softcopy display further includes applying video transition effects to the video frames prior to display.

10. The system according to claim 5 wherein the data associated with a stored digital video sequence is metadata associated with the stored digital video sequence.

11. The system according to claim 5 wherein the data associated with a stored digital video sequence is contained in a separate file.
