Abstract

A prosthesis retaining assembly for securing an implantable prosthesis to a catheter assembly can include a first member including a prosthesis retaining slot configured to retain a portion of the prosthesis. The retaining slot can have a first portion with a first width and a second portion with a second width. The first portion can be distal to the second portion. The second width can be larger than the first width, and the retaining slot can have an opening at a first surface of the first member. The prosthesis retaining assembly can also include a second member configured to be move relative to the first member. The second member can be configured to move to a position that obstructs a portion of the opening of the retaining slot.

Claims

1. A prosthesis retaining assembly for securing an implantable prosthesis to a catheter assembly, the prosthesis retaining assembly comprising:

a first member including a prosthesis retaining slot configured to retain a portion of the prosthesis, the retaining slot having a first portion with a first width and a second portion with a second width, the first portion being distal to the second portion, the second width being larger than the first width, the retaining slot having an opening at a first surface of the first member;

a second member configured to be move relative to the first member, the second member being configured to move to a position that obstructs a portion of the opening of the retaining slot.

2. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 1, wherein the second member is an outer tube surrounding the first member.

The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 2, wherein the first member further comprises a second prosthesis retaining slot and at least two walls extending from an inner portion of a top surface of the first member, spaces between the walls each defining a channel that opens to one of the prosthesis retaining slots, the at least two walls defining a shoulder on an outer portion of the top surface, the walls being configured to prevent a second portion of the prosthesis adjacent the first portion of the prosthesis from moving inward.

4. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 2, wherein the outer tube is configured to rotate relative to the first member, and wherein the outer tube includes a notch at a top surface of the outer tube.

5. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 1,

wherein the first member includes a hollow chamber, and wherein the surface of the first member is an interior surface defining the hollow chamber, and

wherein second member comprises a blocking member positioned within the chamber.

6. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 5, wherein the blocking member includes a central lumen.

7. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 5 further comprising a biasing member coupled to the blocking member, wherein the biasing member applies a biasing force to the blocking member.

8. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 7, wherein the biasing member moves the blocking member to a second position that does not obstruct the portion of the opening of the retaining slot.

9. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 7, wherein the biasing member is configured to rotationally bias the blocking member to the position that obstructs a portion of the opening of the retaining slot.

10. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 5, wherein the first member further comprises a central lumen configured to receive a catheter shaft.

11. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 10, wherein a base portion of the blocking member extends from a bottom surface of the first member, and wherein the base portion has a width greater than a width of the chamber.

12. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 10 further comprising a biasing member coupled to the blocking member, wherein the biasing member biases the blocking member to the position that obstructs a portion of the opening of the retaining slot.

13. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 12, wherein the biasing member comprises a resilient disk.

14. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 5

further comprising a third member configured to be move relative to the first member,

wherein the retaining slot has a second opening at a second surface of the first member, and

wherein the third member is configured to move to a position that obstructs a portion of the second opening of the retaining slot.

15. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 14, wherein the third member is an outer tube surrounding the second member.

16. The prosthesis retaining assembly of claim 1 further comprising second and third prosthesis retaining slots.

17. A method of using a catheter assembly to implant a prosthesis, the method comprising:

inserting a fixation portion of the prosthesis in a prosthesis retaining slot of a valve retainer coupled to a distal end portion of the catheter assembly, the retaining slot having a first portion with a first width and a second portion with a second width, the first portion being distal to the second portion, the second width being larger than the first width, the retaining slot having an opening at a first surface of the first member; and

moving a second member to a position that obstructs a portion of the opening at the first surface to secure the prosthesis to the valve retainer.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein moving the second member to the position that obstructs the portion of the opening comprises biasing the second portion with a biasing member.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein biasing the second portion with the biasing member comprises applying a rotational bias.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein biasing the second portion with the biasing member comprises applying an axial bias.

21. The method of claim 17 further comprising moving the second member to a second position that does not obstruct the opening at the first surface before inserting the fixation portion of the prosthesis in the prosthesis retaining slot.

22. The method of claim 17 further comprising moving a third member to a position that obstructs a second opening at a second surface of the first member.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the third member is an outer tube that surrounds the first member.

24. The method of claim 23 further comprising advancing the outer tube over the prosthesis.

25. The method of claim 22 further comprising moving the third member to a second position that does not obstruct the second opening at the second surface of the first member to release the prosthesis from the catheter assembly.
