Abstract

A method for establishing a support environment for a program may include identifying one or more support environment features depended upon by the program to run on one or more nodes, selecting one or more support software components indicated to provide the features, loading the selected support components on the one or more nodes, automatically configuring the selected support components based on the program, and causing the program and the selected support components to be executed one or more nodes.

Claims

1. A method in a computing system for establishing a support environment for a program, comprising:

identifying one or more support environment features depended upon by the program to run on one or more nodes;

selecting one or more support software components indicated to provide the features;

loading the selected support components on the one or more nodes;

automatically configuring the selected support components based on the program; and

causing the program and the selected support components to be executed one or more nodes.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising, for each of at least one of the selected support components:

identifying one or more support environment features depended upon by the selected support component;

for each of the features identified for the selected support component, identifying one or more support components indicated to provide the feature; and

applying business logic to the identified support components in order to select one of the identified support components.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the support environment features are identified using dependency declarations explicitly constructed for the program.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the identifying comprises analyzing the application'"'"'s code to infer the identified support environment features.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the program is coded in an interpreted or compiled language, and one of the identified support environment features is a runtime for the interpreted or compiled language.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the program is a web application, and the identified support environment features include static web server services and dynamic web server services.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the program is a web application, and the identified support environment features include middleware services.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the program is a web application, and the identified support environment features include framework services.

9. A method in a computing system for maintaining a support environment for a program, the method comprising:

after a support environment has been established for the program by loading one or more support software components each indicated to provide a support environment feature identified as being depended upon by the program, detecting an event relating to the availability of a support component indicated to provide a selected one of the identified features;

in response to the event, unloading a loaded support component indicated to provide the selected feature; and

loading a support component indicated to provide the selected feature other than the unloaded support component.

10. The method of claim 9 further comprising:

prior to the unloading, pausing execution of the program; and

subsequent to the loading, resuming execution of the program.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the detected event is an indication that a loaded support component indicated to provide the selected feature has become unavailable.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the detected event is an indication that a new support component indicated to provide the selected feature has become available.

13. A computer readable storage medium including instructions that, when executed by a processing system, cause the processing system to perform a method for establishing a support environment for a program, the method comprising:

identifying one or more support environment features depended upon by the program to run on one or more nodes;

selecting one or more support software components indicated to provide the features;

loading the selected support components on the one or more nodes;

automatically configuring the selected support components based on the program; and

causing the program and the selected support components to be executed one or more nodes.

14. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13, wherein the method further comprises:

for each of at least one of the selected support components, identifying one or more support environment features depended upon by the selected support component;

for each of the features identified for the selected support component, identifying one or more support components indicated to provide the feature; and

applying business logic to the identified support components in order to select one of the identified support components.

15. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the support environment features are identified using dependency declarations explicitly constructed for the program.

16. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the identifying comprises analyzing the application'"'"'s code to infer the identified support environment features.

17. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the program is coded in an interpreted or compiled language, and one of the identified support environment features is a runtime for the interpreted or compiled language.

18. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the program is a web application, and the identified support environment features include static web server services and dynamic web server services.

19. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the program is a web application, and the identified support environment features include middleware services.

20. The computer readable storage medium of claim 13 wherein the program is a web application, and the identified support environment features include framework services.

21. A system for maintaining a support environment for a program, the system comprising:

a memory; and

a processor, coupled to the memory, wherein the processor is to;

detect, after a support environment has been established for the program by loading one or more support software components each indicated to provide a support environment feature identified as being depended upon by the program, an event relating to the availability of a support component indicated to provide a selected one of the identified features;

in response to the event, unload a loaded support component indicated to provide the selected feature; and

load a support component indicated to provide the selected feature other than the unloaded support component.

22. The system of claim 21 wherein the processor is further to:

prior to the unloading, pause execution of the program; and

subsequent to the loading, resume execution of the program.

23. The system of claim 21 wherein the detected event is an indication that a loaded support component indicated to provide the selected feature has become unavailable.

24. The system of claim 21 wherein the detected event is an indication that a new support component indicated to provide the selected feature has become available.
