Abstract

Aspects of a method and system for managing quality of service via a broadband gateway are provided. In this regard, a broadband gateway that supports one or more first QoS protocols may determine, based on communications with a plurality of communication devices, whether each of the plurality of communication devices supports the one or more first QoS protocols. The gateway may communicate a result of the determination to a content provider and/or service provider. In this manner, the content provider and/or service provider may determine whether to utilize one or more second QoS protocols to deliver content to a particular one of said plurality of communication devices based on whether said particular of communication devices based on whether said particular one of said plurality of communication devices supports the one or more first QoS protocols. The gateway may be operable to map between QoS protocols.

Claims

1. A method for networking, the method comprising:

in a broadband gateway that enables communication with a plurality of communication devices, wherein said broadband gateway is operable to handle at least one physical layer connection to at least one corresponding network access service provider;

determining, based on communications with said plurality of communication devices, whether each of said plurality of communication devices supports one or more first quality of service (QoS) protocols that are supported by said broadband gateway; and

communicating a result of said determining to a content provider and/or service provider, wherein said content provider and/or service provider;

determines whether to utilize one or more second QoS protocols to deliver content to a particular one of said plurality of communication devices based on whether said particular one of said plurality of communication devices supports said one or more first QoS protocols.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said one or more first QoS protocols and/or said one or more second QoS protocols comprise one or more of:

IEEE 802.1AS, IEEE 802.1Qat, IEEE 802.1Qav, and IEEE 802.1BA.

3. The method according to claim 1, comprising mapping between said one or more first QoS protocols and said one or more second QoS protocols in instances that said one or more first QoS protocols are different than said one or more second QoS protocols.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said one or more first QoS protocols and said one or more second QoS protocols enable delivering content with guaranteed latency.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein central office equipment of said provider is configured based on said results of said determining.

6. The method according to claim 1, comprising communicating said result of said determining to said provider upon receiving a request for content from one of said plurality of communication devices.

7. The method according to claim 1, comprising storing said results of said determining in memory within said broadband gateway.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said broadband gateway handles a plurality of concurrent physical layer connections to one or more network access service providers.

9. The method according to claim 8, comprising selecting which one or ones of said physical layer connections are utilized to handle particular traffic based on QoS metrics required for said traffic.

10. The method according to claim 8, wherein each one of said plurality of physical layer connections utilizes a different physical layer technology than other ones of said plurality of physical layer connections.

11. A system for networking, the system comprising:

one or more circuits for use a broadband gateway that enables communication with a plurality of communication devices, said one or more circuits being operable to;

handle at least one physical layer connection to at least one corresponding network access service provider;

determine, based on communications with said plurality of communication devices, whether each of said plurality of communication devices supports one or more first Quality of Service (QoS) protocols that are supported by said broadband gateway; and

communicate a result of said determining to a content provider and/or service provider, wherein said content provider and/or service provider;

determines whether to utilize one or more second QoS protocols to deliver content to a particular one of said plurality of communication devices based on whether said particular one of said plurality of communication devices supports said one or more first QoS protocols.

12. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more first QoS protocols and/or said one or more second QoS protocols comprise one or more of:

IEEE 802.1AS, IEEE 802.1Qat, IEEE 802.1Qav, and IEEE 802.1BA.

13. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits are operable to map between said one or more first QoS protocols and said one or more second QoS protocols in instances that said one or more first QoS protocols are different than said one or more second QoS protocols.

14. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more first QoS protocols and said one or more second QoS protocols enable delivering content with guaranteed latency.

15. The system according to claim 11, wherein central office equipment of said provider is configured based on said results of said determining.

16. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits are operable to communicate said result of said determining to said provider upon receiving a request for content from one of said plurality of communication devices.

17. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits are operable to store said results of said determining in memory within said broadband gateway.

18. The system according to claim 18, wherein said broadband gateway handles a plurality of concurrent physical layer connections to one or more network access service providers.

19. The system according to claim 18, wherein said one or more circuits are operable to select which one or ones of said physical layer connections are utilized to handle particular traffic based on QoS metrics required for said traffic.

20. The system according to claim 18, wherein each one of said plurality of physical layer connections utilizes a different physical layer technology than other ones of said plurality of physical layer connections.
