Abstract

A broadband gateway may provision services requested in a home network managed and/or serviced by the broadband gateway by a user associated with the broadband gateway, based on determination of criteria related to the requested service. The requested service may comprise obtaining and/or delivering content for consumption by one or more of a plurality of devices serviced by the broadband gateway in the home network. The criteria may comprise device related data, user preference related information, service performance related parameters, payment related information, and/or energy use related information. The broadband gateway may store information associated with the determined criteria. Provisioning requested services may comprise negotiating with at least one remote resource that may support at least a portion of the requested service. The negotiation may comprise brokering and/or arbitrating a plurality of options of remote resources utilized for providing the at least a portion of the requested service.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

in a broadband gateway communicatively coupled to a plurality of devices, wherein said broadband gateway is operable to handle at least one physical layer connection to at least one corresponding network access service provider;

receiving a request from a user associated with said broadband gateway, wherein said request comprises information related to delivery of a service to said user via said broadband gateway;

determining criteria related to providing said requested service; and

provisioning said requested service based on said determined criteria, wherein;

said provisioning comprises negotiating with at least one remote resource that supports at least a portion of said requested service; and

said remote resource is accessed via said at least one physical layer connection.

The method according to claim 1, wherein said at least one physical layer connection comprises a plurality of physical layer connections and said at least one corresponding network access service provider comprises a plurality of corresponding access service providers, and wherein each of said plurality of physical layer connections corresponds to a respective one of said plurality of corresponding access service providers.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said requested service comprises obtaining and/or delivering content for consumption by one or more of said plurality of devices.

4. The method according to claim 1, comprising brokering and/or arbitrating among a plurality of options for said remote resource for providing said at least portion of said requested service during said negotiation.

The method according to claim 1, wherein said criteria comprises capabilities associated with at least one of said plurality of devices that is used in conjunction with said requested service, one or more service performance related parameters, user preference related information, pricing related information, and/or energy use related information.

6. The method according to claim 5, wherein said one or more service performance related parameters comprise quality of service, channel coding, and/or content formatting.

7. The method according to claim 5, wherein said one or more user preference related information comprise use related information, energy related parameters, performance related information, payment related information, and/or device related information.

8. The method according to claim 1, comprising storing information associated with said criteria.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein said stored information comprises provider related information, one or more device profiles corresponding to one or more of said plurality of devices, and/or a user profile associated with said user.

10. The method according to claim 8, wherein at least a portion of said stored information is configurable by said user.

11. A system, comprising:

one or more circuits and/or processors for use in a broadband gateway communicatively coupled to a plurality of devices, wherein said broadband gateway is operable to handle at least one physical layer connection to at least one corresponding network access service provider, said one or more circuits and/or processors being operable to;

receive a request from a user associated with said broadband gateway, wherein said request comprises information related to delivery of a service to said user via said broadband gateway;

determine a criteria related to providing said requested service; and

provision said requested service based on said determined criteria, wherein;

said provisioning comprises negotiating with at least one remote resource that supports at least a portion of said requested service; and

said remote resource is accessed via said at least one physical layer connection.

The system according to claim 11, wherein said at least one physical layer connection comprises a plurality of physical layer connections and said at least one corresponding network access service provider comprises a plurality of corresponding access service providers, and wherein each of said plurality of physical layer connections corresponds to a respective one of said plurality of corresponding access service providers.

13. The system according to claim 11, wherein said requested service comprises obtaining and/or delivering content for consumption by one or more of said plurality of devices.

14. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits and/or processors are operable to broker and/or arbitrate among a plurality of options for said remote resource for providing said at least portion of said requested service during said negotiation.

The system according to claim 11, wherein said criteria comprises capabilities associated with at least one of said plurality of devices that is used in conjunction with said requested service, one or more service performance related parameters, user preference related information, pricing related information, and/or energy use related information.

16. The system according to claim 15, wherein said one or more service performance related parameters comprise quality of service, channel coding, and/or content formatting.

17. The system according to claim 15, wherein said one or more user preference related information comprise use related information, energy related parameters, performance related information, payment related information, and/or device related information.

18. The system according to claim 11, wherein said one or more circuits and/or processors are operable to store information associated with said criteria.

19. The system according to claim 18, wherein said stored information comprises provider related information, one or more device profiles corresponding to one or more of said plurality of devices, and/or a user profile associated with said user.

20. The system according to claim 18, wherein at least a portion of said stored information is configurable by said user.
