Abstract

The present invention provides systems and methods to realize the potential benefit of portable storage devices by taking advantage of standard PCs including an optical disk drive capable of reading an optical disk, such as a CD or a DVD, cost effective optical disks, and the Internet.

In a preferred embodiment, an individual patient provides personal data to a healthcare service center. The healthcare service center then creates a portable optical disk for the patient to carry, if he/she so desires. The personal data that is written onto the portable optical disk is stored on a database management server database and is readable and updateable by the individual patient using his/her PC with an optical disk drive and connected to the Internet. The individual patient can choose to update his/her personal data on the portable optical disk and can receive a new portable optical disk that includes the update. The new portable optical disk containing the latest update is created and delivered to the patient by the database management server.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method for personal health data management, executing on one or more computers, said method comprising:

receiving, from a requestor, at a first computer associated with a first personal health data database a request to direct updates of first personal health data associated with a particular identity to a second computer associated with a second personal health data database, wherein the first personal health data is stored in the first personal health data database associated with the first computer;

verifying permissions, for the requestor, to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the particular identity based on first electronic permissions input;

receiving at the first computer associated with the first personal health data database, updates to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity;

verifying permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity based on second electronic permissions input,

wherein said verification of permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity is distinct from the verification of permissions to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the particular identity;

when the permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity have been verified, updating the first personal health data with the updates to the first personal health data; and

when the first personal health data has been updated and the permissions to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the first particular identity have been verified, sending the updates to the first personal health data to the second computer associated with the second personal health data database.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving updates to the first personal health data comprises receiving updates to the first personal health data from a second requestor, wherein the requestor and the second requestor are distinct.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the updates to the first personal health data comprises receiving the updates to the first personal health data, said updates having been retrieved from a third personal health data database, wherein said third personal health data database is distinct from said first personal health data database and said second personal health data database.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the updates to the first personal health data is received from the second computer based at least in part on a request sent from the first computer to the second computer.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving an electronic request from a second requestor for the first personal health data associated with the particular identity stored in the first personal health data database;

verifying that the second requestor has permission to access to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity; and

when the second requestor has permission to access the first personal health data associated with the patent identity, providing access to the first personal health data stored in the first personal health data database to the second requestor.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the method further comprises, when the second requestor has permission to access the first personal health data associated with the patent identity, providing advertising with the first personal health data.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a request to access the first personal health data from a second requestor; and

when the first personal health data has been updated and the second requestor has permission to access the first personal health data, providing access to the updated first personal health data.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving the updates to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity health data comprises receiving the updates to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity at least in part based on a polling procedure.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a request to store second personal health data associated with the particular identity from a second requestor; and

when the second requestor has permissions to store the second personal health data associated with the particular identity, storing the second personal health data in the first personal health data database associated with the first computer.

10. A system, comprising one or more computers, for personal health data management, said system comprising:

a first computer associated with a first personal health data database, said first computer configured to;

receive, from a requestor, a request to direct updates of first personal health data associated with a particular identity to a second computer associated with a second personal health data database, wherein the first personal health data is stored in the first personal health data database;

verify permissions, for the requestor, to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the particular identity based on first electronic permissions input;

receive updates to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity;

verify permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity based on second electronic permissions input,

wherein said verification of permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity is distinct from the verification of permissions to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the particular identity;

when the permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity have been verified, update the first personal health data with the updates to the first personal health data; and

when the first personal health data has been updated and the permissions to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the first particular identity have been verified, send the updates to the first personal health data to the second computer associated with the second personal health data database.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein receiving updates to the first personal health data comprises receiving updates to the first personal health data from a second requestor, wherein the requestor and the second requestor are distinct.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the updates to the first personal health data is received from the second computer based at least in part on a request sent from the first computer to the second computer.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the first computer is a database management server and the second computer is a health care service center server.

14. The system of claim 10, wherein the system is further configured to:

receive an electronic request from a second requestor for the first personal health data associated with the particular identity stored in the first personal health data database;

verify that the second requestor has permission to access to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity; and

when the second requestor has permission to access the first personal health data associated with the patent identity, provide access to the first personal health data stored in the first personal health data database to the second requestor.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the system is further configured to:

receive a request to access the first personal health data from a second requestor; and

when the first personal health data has been updated and the second requestor has permission to access the first personal health data, provide access to the updated first personal health data.

16. The system of claim 10, wherein receiving the updates to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity health data comprises receiving the updates to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity at least in part based on a polling procedure.

17. The system of claim 10, wherein the system is further configured to:

receive a request to store second personal health data associated with the particular identity from a second requestor; and

when the second requestor has permissions to store the second personal health data associated with the particular identity, store the second personal health data in the first personal health data database associated with the first computer.

18. A non-transient computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions for personal health data management, said computer-executable instructions, when running on one or more computers, performing a method comprising:

receiving, from a requestor, at a first computer associated with a first personal health data database a request to direct updates of first personal health data associated with a particular identity to a second computer associated with a second personal health data database, wherein the first personal health data is stored in the first personal health data database associated with the first computer;

verifying permissions, for the requestor, to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the particular identity based on first electronic permissions input;

receiving at the first computer associated with the first personal health data database, updates to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity;

verifying permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity based on second electronic permissions input,

wherein said verification of permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity is distinct from the verification of permissions to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the particular identity;

when the permissions to update the first personal health data associated with the particular identity have been verified, updating the first personal health data with the updates to the first personal health data; and

when the first personal health data has been updated and the permissions to direct updates of the first personal health data associated with the first particular identity have been verified, sending the updates to the first personal health data to the second computer associated with the second personal health data database.

19. The non-transient computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein receiving updates to the first personal health data comprises receiving updates to the first personal health data from a second requestor, wherein the requestor and the second requestor are distinct.

20. The non-transient computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving an electronic request from a second requestor for the first personal health data associated with the particular identity stored in the first personal health data database;

verifying that the second requestor has permission to access to the first personal health data associated with the particular identity; and

when the second requestor has permission to access the first personal health data associated with the patent identity, providing access to the first personal health data stored in the first personal health data database to the second requestor.

21. The non-transient computer-readable medium of claim 18, wherein the method further comprises:

receiving a request to store second personal health data associated with the particular identity from a second requestor; and

when the second requestor has permissions to store the second personal health data associated with the particular identity, storing the second personal health data in the first personal health data database associated with the first computer.
