Abstract

A hemodialysis system includes: (i) a dialyzer; (ii) a dialysate source; a dialysate pump; (iii) a dialysate cassette operatively connected to the dialysate pump such that the dialysate pump can pump dialysate through the dialysate cassette when the dialysate cassette is in fluid communication with the dialysate source, the dialysate cassette in fluid communication with the dialyzer; (iv) a blood pump; and (v) a blood cassette separate from the dialysate cassette, the blood cassette operatively connected to the blood pump such that the blood pump can pump blood through the blood cassette, the blood cassette including a housing, the housing including a from-patient tube connector, a to-patient tube connector, a saline/priming tube connector, a to-dialyzer tube connector, a from-dialyzer tube connector, and an internal air separation chamber.

Claims

1. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a dialysate source;

a dialysate pump;

a dialysate cassette operatively connected to the dialysate pump such that the dialysate pump can pump dialysate through the dialysate cassette when the dialysate cassette is in fluid communication with the dialysate source, the dialysate cassette in fluid communication with the dialyzer;

a blood pump; and

a blood cassette separate from the dialysate cassette, the blood cassette operatively connected to the blood pump such that the blood pump can pump blood through the blood cassette, the blood cassette including a housing, the housing including a from-patient tube connector, a to-patient tube connector, a saline/priming tube connnector, a to-dialyzer tube connector, a from-dialyzer tube connector, and an internal air separation chamber.

2. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the internal air separation chamber is connected fluidly to the from-dialyzer tube connector and the to-patient tube connector.

3. The hemodialysis system of claim 2, wherein the from-dialyzer tube connector is in operation located elevationally above the to-patient tube connector.

4. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the blood cassette is operably connected to the blood pump via a blood pumping tube extending outside of the rigid housing, the blood pumping tube connected fluidly to the from-patient tube connector and the to-dialyzer tube connector.

5. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the to-dialyzer tube connector is in operation located elevationally above the from-dialyzer tube connector.

6. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the to-dialyzer tube connector is in operation located elevationally above the to-patient tube connector.

7. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the to-dialyzer tube connector is in operation located elevationally above the from-patient tube connector.

8. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the to-dialyzer tube connector is in operation located elevationally at the top of the blood cassette.

9. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the from-patient tube connector, to-patient tube connector, saline/priming tube connnector, to-dialyzer tube connector, and from-dialyzer tube connector extends outwardly from an outer wall of the housing to accept the respective tube.

10. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein the blood cassette further includes a pumping tube for operable connection to the blood pump.

12. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, which includes at least one pressure sensor, and wherein the blood cassette further includes at least one pressure sensing area positioned and arranged for operable engagement with the at least one pressure sensor.

13. The hemodialysis system of claim 12, which includes arterial and venous pressure sensors and mating arterial and venous pressure sensing areas on the blood cassette.

14. The hemodialysis system of claim 1, wherein lines internal to the housing of the blood cassette are valved.

11. The hemodialysis system of claim 11, wherein the blood tube, at an end that carries blood from the blood pump, meets the housing in operation horizontally across from the to-dialyzer tube connector.

15. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a blood pump; and

a blood cassette including a housing, the housing including a pumping tube operatively connected to the blood pump for pumping blood through the blood cassette, the housing further including a from-patient tube connector, a to-patient tube connector, a saline/priming tube connnector, a to-dialyzer tube connector, a from-dialyzer tube connector, and an air separation chamber.

16. The hemodialysis system of claim 15, which further includes a dialysate pump operable with a dialysate cassette separate from the blood cassette, the dialysate cassette in fluid communication with the dialyzer.

17. The hemodialysis system of claim 15, wherein the blood cassette further includes a vent to vent air removed from blood within the blood cassette.

18. The hemodialysis system of claim 15, wherein the air separation chamber is formed within the housing.

19. A hemodialysis system comprising:

a dialyzer;

a blood pump; and

a blood cassette including a housing, the housing including a pumping tube extending along a first side of the housing, the pumping tube operatively connected to the blood pump for pumping blood through the blood cassette, the housing, further including a from-patient tube connector, a to-patient tube connector, a saline/priming tube connnector, a to-dialyzer tube connector, a from-dialyzer tube connector, and wherein each of the connectors extends along a side of the housing different from the first side of the housing.

20. The hemodialysis system of claim 19, wherein each of the connectors extends along a side of the housing opposing the first side of the housing.
