Abstract

Implementations are directed to predicting signal degradation at receivers used to display a programming service. The receivers capture signal strength data that is then transmitted to a processing location, which may be associated with a provider of the programming service. A signal degradation detector at the provider operates to predict whether or not a future unacceptable signal quality will occur within a time interval. The prediction may be based on a test quantity calculated from signals captured at the receiver and based on a figure of merit for the geographic locale in which the receiver is located. A maintenance call may be initiated for those receivers that have such a poor signal quality.

Claims

1. A method for providing maintenance to a receiver, comprising:

determining a time series of test quantities for a receiver, the test quantities based on signal strength measurements collected at the receiver at plurality of time instances;

receiving a figure of merit for the receiver, the figure of merit indicating an expected signal quality for the receiver;

determining a failure prediction for the receiver based on the time series of test quantities and the figure of merit; and

identifying the receiver for maintenance if the failure prediction indicates a future unacceptable signal strength for the receiver.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

eliminating the receiver as a candidate for failure prediction if the time series of test quantities does not trend downward for a predetermined number of time instances; and

eliminating the receiver as a candidate for failure prediction if the time series of test quantities is not below the figure of merit for a predetermined number of time instances;

wherein the operation of determining a failure prediction is performed only if the receiver is not eliminated as a candidate for failure prediction.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

applying linear regression to the time series of test quantities and the figure of merit to produce a linear function, wherein the linear function is used to determine the failure prediction for the receiver.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the linear regression is recursive.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

rejecting a particular test quantity from the linear regression if the particular test quantity indicates a transient condition.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising:

calculating a first error for a linear function based on the particular test condition, the first error corresponding to a predicted signal strength for a first time instance subsequent to a time instance of the particular test quantity;

if the first error is greater than a predetermined error threshold, calculating a second error for the linear function based on the particular test condition, the second error corresponding to a predicted signal strength for a second time instance subsequent to the time instance of the particular test quantity; and

if the second error is less than a predetermined error threshold, determining that the particular test quantity indicates a transient condition.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the figure of merit indicates an expected signal quality for receivers in a geographic region in which the receiver is located.

8. A method for providing maintenance to a plurality of receivers, comprising:

receiving signal histories for a first group of receivers;

identifying a second group of receivers from the first group of receivers, the second group of receivers having a downward trending signal strength and a signal strength below a predetermined level for at least one time instance;

creating a linear signal strength function for each of the second group of receivers, the linear signal strength function based on the signal history for the receiver and the predetermined level;

identifying a third group of receivers by selecting, from the second group of receivers, those receivers whose linear function has a slope and an intercept that indicate a future unacceptable signal strength; and

flagging the third group of receivers for maintenance.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein each signal history is a series of signal strength measurements taken at the corresponding receiver at a series of time instances, the method further comprising:

defining an integer W as a window size;

determining a test quantity for each receiver in the first group for each of a last W time instances; and

determining a figure of merit for each of a number of geographic locals, wherein each receiver in the first group of receivers belongs to one of the geographic locals;

wherein the operations of identifying the second group of receiver, creating a linear function, and identifying a third group of receivers are performed for each of the last W time instances using test quantities for each receiver and the figure of merit for each geographic locale.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein determining the test quantity for each receiver in the first group of receivers for the last W time instances includes:

receiving a plurality of signal strength measurements for each of the receivers in the first group for each of the last of W time instances, each signal strength measurement in a particular plurality of signal strength measurements being measured on a particular channel used by the corresponding receiver; and

calculating a geometric mean of the plurality of signal strength measurements for each of the receivers for each of the last W time instances.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein determining the figure of merit for each of the geographic locations includes:

determining a strong channel and a weak channel for the geographic locale;

defining a minimum value of acceptable signal reception for the strong channel;

defining a maximum value of unacceptable signal reception for the strong channel;

defining a minimum value of acceptable signal reception for the weak channel;

defining a maximum value of unacceptable signal reception for the weak channel;

calculating a first intermediate quantity by taking the square root of the product of the minimum value of acceptable signal reception for the strong channel and the maximum value of unacceptable signal reception for the weak channel;

calculating a second intermediate quantity by taking the square root of the product of the maximum value of unacceptable signal reception for the strong channel and the minimum value of acceptable signal reception for the weak channel; and

defining the figure of merit to be the lesser of the first intermediate quantity and the second intermediate quantity.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein identifying the second group of receivers comprises:

defining integer values M and N, wherein M is less than the window size and N is less than M; and

including a particular receiver from the first group of receivers in the second group of receivers if the last M test quantities are less than the figure of merit and the last N test quantities are decreasing.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein identifying the second group of receivers comprises:

defining integer values M and N, wherein M is less than the window size and N is less than M; and

including the particular receiver from the first group of receivers in the second group of receivers if the last M test quantities are decreasing and the last N test quantities are less than the figure of merit.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein creating the linear signal strength function comprises:

(a) setting a state function based on a test quantity and a figure of merit for a test time instance, the state function including a slope and an intercept;

(b) determining a first error that occurs when a signal quality for a first time instance subsequent to the test time instance is estimated based on the state function;

(c) if the first error is less than an error threshold, incrementing the test time instance to a next subsequent time instance and repeating operation (b) if a subsequent time instance exists;

(d) if the first error is greater than the error threshold, determining a second error that occurs when a signal quality for a second time instance subsequent to the test time instance is estimated based on the state function;

(e) if the second error is less than the error threshold, ignoring the test time instance, incrementing the test time instance to a next subsequent time instance and repeating operation (b) if a subsequent time instance exists;

(f) if the second error is less greater than the error threshold, resetting the state function based on a test quantity and a figure of merit for the first time instance subsequent to the test time instance, incrementing the test time instance to a next subsequent time instance and repeating operation (b) if a subsequent time instance exists; and

(g) defining the linear signal strength function based on the slope and intercept of the state function of the state function resulting from operations (a) through (f).

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the test time instance of operation (a) is the earliest time instance within the window.

16. The method of claim 9, identifying the third group of receivers comprises:

defining a first constant;

calculating a first quantity as the product of the slope and the sum of the first constant;

calculating a second quantity as the sum of the first quantity and the intercept;

defining a second constant; and

calculating a third quantity as product of the second constant and the figure of merit;

wherein the second quantity is less than the third quantity for each receiver selected from the second group of receivers.

17. A system for providing maintenance to a receiver, comprising:

a test quantity module operable to determine a time series of test quantities for a receiver based on signal strength measurements collected at the receiver at plurality of time instances;

a figure of merit module operable to receive a figure of merit for the receiver, the figure of merit indicating an expected signal quality for the receiver; and

a prediction module operable to determine a failure prediction for the receiver based on a linear function computed from the time series of test quantities and the figure of merit.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the prediction module is further operable to:

eliminate the receiver as a candidate for failure prediction if the time series of test quantities is not tending downwards for a predetermined number of time instances; and

eliminate the receiver as a candidate for failure prediction if the time series of test quantities is not below the figure of merit for a predetermined period of time;

wherein the failure prediction module determines a failure prediction for the receiver only if the receiver is not eliminated as a candidate for failure prediction.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the prediction module is further operable to:

apply linear regression to the time series of test quantities to produce the linear function, wherein the linear regression is recursive; and

reject a particular test quantity from the linear regression if the particular test quantity is indicative of a transient condition.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the prediction module is further operable to:

calculate a first error for a linear function based on the particular test condition, the first error corresponding to a predicted signal strength for a first time instance subsequent to a time instance of the particular test quantity;

if the first error is greater than a predetermined error threshold, calculate a second error for the linear function based on the particular test condition, the second error corresponding to a predicted signal strength for a second time instance subsequent to the time instance of the particular test quantity; and

if the second error is less than a predetermined error threshold, determine that the particular test quantity is indicative of a transient condition.
