Abstract

A system for storing and dispensing discrete doses of pharmaceuticals includes: a housing with an internal cavity having a front wall with first and second windows; multiple storage locations positioned within the housing; and a carrier assembly positioned and movable within the housing. The carrier assembly is configured to receive a pharmaceutical dose package loaded into either the first or second window and convey the pharmaceutical dose package to one of the storage locations for storage therein, and is further configured to retrieve a pharmaceutical dose package from one of the storage locations and return the pharmaceutical dose package to the first or second window for dispensing therefrom.

Claims

1. A system for storing and dispensing discrete doses of pharmaceuticals, comprising:

a housing with an internal cavity having a front wall with first and second windows;

multiple storage locations positioned within the housing; and

a carrier assembly positioned and movable within the housing, the carrier assembly configured to receive a pharmaceutical dose package loaded into either the first or second window and convey the pharmaceutical dose package to one of the storage locations for storage therein, and further configured to retrieve a pharmaceutical dose package from one of the storage locations and return the pharmaceutical dose package to the first or second window for dispensing therefrom.

2. The system defined in claim 1, further comprising a plurality of bins, each of the bins configured to reside in one of the storage locations and be conveyed by the carrier assembly between the storage location and the first or second window as the bin holds the pharmaceutical dose package.

3. The system defined in claim 2, wherein the bins are configured to extend partially forwardly of the first or second window, but to be captured by the first or second window to prevent removal of the bins from the housing through the first or second window.

4. The system defined in claim 1, wherein the second window is of a different size than the first window.

5. The system defined in claim 4, wherein the multiple storage locations comprise first and second sets of storage locations, the first set of storage locations being configured to store a package of a different size than the second set of storage locations.

The system defined in claim 5, further comprising a plurality of bins divided into first and second sets of bins, wherein the first set of bins is sized and configured to reside in one of the first set of storage locations and be conveyed by the carrier assembly between the first storage location and the first window, and wherein the second set of bins is sized and configured to reside in one of the second set of storage locations and be conveyed by the carrier assembly between the second storage location and the second window.

28. The system defined in claim 1, wherein the system includes a housing having a door, and further comprising a security unit configured to provide an alert if the door is open.

29. The system defined in claim 1, wherein the system includes a housing having a door, and further comprising a camera within the housing positioned to capture an image when the door is opened.

7. A system for storing and dispensing discrete doses of pharmaceuticals, comprising:

a housing with an internal cavity having a front wall with a window;

multiple storage locations positioned within the housing;

a carrier assembly positioned and movable within the housing; and

a plurality of bins, each of the bins configured to reside in one of the storage locations;

the carrier assembly configured to receive a bin that contains a pharmaceutical dose package loaded into the window and convey the bin and pharmaceutical dose package to one of the storage locations for storage therein, and further configured to retrieve a bin that contains a pharmaceutical dose package from one of the storage locations and convey the bin and pharmaceutical dose package to the window for dispensing therefrom.

8. The system defined in claim 7, wherein the bins are configured to extend partially forwardly of the window, but to be captured by the window to prevent removal of the bins from the housing through the window.

9. The system defined in claim 7, wherein the window is a first window, and further comprising a second window in the front wall, the second window being of a different size than the first window.

10. The system defined in claim 9, wherein the multiple storage locations comprise first and second sets of storage locations, the first set of storage locations being configured to store a package of a different size than the second set of storage locations.

11. The system defined in claim 10, further comprising a plurality of bins divided into first and second sets of bins, wherein the first set of bins is sized and configured to reside in one of the first set of storage locations and be conveyed by the carrier assembly between the first storage location and the first window, and wherein the second set of bins is sized and configured to reside in one of the second set of storage locations and be conveyed by the carrier assembly between the second storage location and the second window.

12. A carrier assembly for a storage and dispensing apparatus, comprising:

a base;

a pair of jaws, the jaws having facing contact surfaces that are substantially parallel to each other;

a first drive unit coupled to the jaws and the base configured to reciprocally drive the jaws toward and away from each other; and

a second drive unit coupled to the jaws, the first drive unit and the second drive unit configured to convey the jaws in either direction substantially parallel to the contact surfaces.

13. The carrier assembly defined in claim 12, further comprising a vertical rail to which the base is slidably mounted.

14. The carrier assembly defined in claim 12, wherein the jaws are mounted on blocks driven by the first drive unit.

15. The carrier assembly defined in claim 14, wherein the first drive unit is mounted on a carriage driven by the second drive unit.

16. The carrier assembly defined in claim 12, further comprising a bar code scanner mounted to the base to detect a bar code on a object positioned in the jaws.

17. The carrier assembly defined in claim 12, further comprising sensors in the jaws that detect the presence of an object positioned between the jaws.

18. A bin for receiving, storing and dispensing a pharmaceutical dose package, comprising:

a box having first and second opposed, generally parallel side walls spanned by a floor and a rear wall;

wherein the front end of the box is open; and

wherein the first side wall includes an open-ended slot.

19. The bin defined in claim 18, further comprising a pharmaceutical dose package stored in the box.

20. The bin defined in claim 18, wherein the pharmaceutical dose package is a blister pack having an upstanding blister, and wherein the blister is positioned within the open-ended slot.

21. The bin defined in claim 19, wherein the pharmaceutical dose package includes a bar code that is readable through one of the side walls of the bin.

22. The bin defined in claim 18, wherein a flange extending toward the second side wall lines at least a portion of the slot.

23. The bin defined in claim 18, wherein the slot extends at an oblique angle relative to the floor.

24. The bin defined in claim 18, wherein the slot is flared outwardly at its open end.

25. A carousel assembly, comprising:

first and second sprockets;

an endless member having a radially inward surface that engages the first and second sprockets, the endless member defining a generally oblong path; and

a plurality of support members attached to the radially inward surface of the endless member and extending generally perpendicular to a plane defined by the oblong path;

wherein the first sprocket has a plurality of perimeter pockets, the perimeter pockets being sized and configured to receive the support members as they travel along the oblong path.

26. The carousel assembly defined in claim 25, wherein each of the support members includes a first bearing surface located above the endless member, and wherein the first bearing surface contacts a second bearing surface located above and adjacent the perimeter pockets of the first sprocket.

27. The carousel assembly defined in claim 25, further comprising two parallel rails positioned below straight portions of the oblong path, and wherein the support members include wheels that engage the rails.
