1. A method for illuminating an interior of a vehicle with a modular area illumination system, the modular area illumination system comprising:
- a system controller; and
a plurality of an intelligent light module groups, each comprising;
one or more light modules, each of which comprises a plurality of discrete illumination sources;
a power supply; and
an intelligent module group controller comprising;
a) circuitry that controls the illumination levels of the illumination sources; and
b) an interface for receiving information;
the method comprising;
initializing each of the module groups to assign a unique address to respective module groups;
sending a command, by the system controller, directly or indirectly, to each module group, the command being associated with a color and illumination value; and
receiving the command, by a module group, and adjusting a color and illumination of the illumination sources to the associated color.

A method and associated illumination system are provided for illuminating an interior of a vehicle with a modular area illumination system, the modular area illumination system comprising: a system controller; and a plurality of an intelligent light module groups, each comprising: one or more light modules, each of which comprises a plurality of discrete illumination sources; a power supply; and an intelligent module group controller comprising: a) circuitry that controls the illumination levels of the illumination sources; and b) an interface for sending and receiving information; the method comprising: initializing each of the module groups to assign a unique address to respective module groups; sending a command, by the system controller, directly or indirectly, to each module group, the command being associated with a color and illumination value and setting; and receiving the command, by a module group, and adjusting a color and illumination of the illumination sources to the associated color.
