Abstract

A method and associated illumination system are provided for illuminating an interior of a vehicle with a modular area illumination system, the modular area illumination system comprising: a system controller; and a plurality of an intelligent light module groups, each comprising: one or more light modules, each of which comprises a plurality of discrete illumination sources; a power supply; and an intelligent module group controller comprising: a) circuitry that controls the illumination levels of the illumination sources; and b) an interface for sending and receiving information; the method comprising: initializing each of the module groups to assign a unique address to respective module groups; sending a command, by the system controller, directly or indirectly, to each module group, the command being associated with a color and illumination value and setting; and receiving the command, by a module group, and adjusting a color and illumination of the illumination sources to the associated color.

Claims

1. A method for illuminating an interior of a vehicle with a modular area illumination system, the modular area illumination system comprising:

a system controller; and

a plurality of an intelligent light module groups, each comprising;

one or more light modules, each of which comprises a plurality of discrete illumination sources;

a power supply; and

an intelligent module group controller comprising;

a) circuitry that controls the illumination levels of the illumination sources; and

b) an interface for receiving information;

the method comprising;

initializing each of the module groups to assign a unique address to respective module groups;

sending a command, by the system controller, directly or indirectly, to each module group, the command being associated with a color and illumination value; and

receiving the command, by a module group, and adjusting a color and illumination of the illumination sources to the associated color.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein modules within a module group are individually addressable.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the initialization of the module groups comprises:

assigning a first address to a first module group by the system controller; and

assigning an n^th address to an n^th module group by an n-1^th module group that has already been assigned its address.

4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the interface of the module groups is an RS-485 interface, and assigning of the addresses utilizes the RS-485 protocol.

5. The method according to claim 4, wherein the interface of the module groups further comprises a token line, and the token line is utilized to indicate that an RS-485 message is intended for a specific module group.

6. The method according to claim 1, further comprising:

providing each module group with a color point table comprising a set of records with information related to driving the illumination sources to produce a predefined set of color points.

7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the information related to driving comprises information about adjusting duty cycles of a power signal sent to the illumination sources.

8. The method according to claim 6, further comprising:

providing each module group with a scene table comprising a set of records that relate scenes to color points; and

transmitting consistent scene information from the system controller, directly or indirectly, to each module group;

inputting the scene data by the module group and obtaining a related color point from the scene table; and

driving the illumination sources with the module group controller to produce the related color point.

9. The method according to claim 8, further comprising:

compensating the driving of the illumination sources based on illumination source calibration data associated with the modules or module groups.

10. The method according to claim 8, further comprising:

compensating the driving of the illumination sources based on temperature data measured at the modules or module groups.

11. The method according to claim 8, further comprising:

compensating the driving of the illumination sources based on age data associated with the modules or module groups.

12. The method according to claim 8, further comprising:

compensating the driving of the illumination sources based on illumination source calibration data, temperature data, and age data associated with the modules or

13. The method according to claim 8, further comprising:

selecting scene data manually on an attendant control panel; and

sending the selected scene data to the module groups.

14. The method according to claim 8, further comprising:

automatically sending a sequence of scenes, directly or indirectly, to the module groups from the system controller according to a predefined script based on timing or external event information.

15. The method according to claim 8, further comprising:

providing a gradual transition from a first scene to a second scene.

16. The method according to claim 15, wherein the gradual transition from the first scene to the second scene is based on a sequential series of color points.

17. The method according to claim 6, wherein:

the illumination system comprises a plurality of lighting regions;

each lighting region comprises one or more module groups; and

a first color point associated with a scene in a first lighting region is different from a second color point associated with the scene in a second lighting region.

18. A modular area illumination system, the modular area illumination system comprising:

a system controller; and

a plurality of an intelligent light module groups, each comprising;

one or more light modules, each of which comprises a plurality of discrete illumination sources;

a power supply; and

an intelligent module group controller comprising;

a) circuitry that controls the illumination levels of the illumination sources; and

b) an interface for receiving information;

an initialization module of the system controller for;

beginning the assignment of a unique address to respective module groups; and

sending a command, directly or indirectly, to each module group, the command being associated with a color and illumination value; and

an initialization module of the module group controller for receiving the command and adjusting a color and illumination of the illumination sources to the associated color.

19. The illumination system according to claim 18, wherein module groups comprise a unique address.

20. The illumination system according to claim 18, wherein the interface of the module groups comprise two inputs:

a data input via which addressing information and commands are provided, and a token input for indicating that communications present on the data input are intended for that module group.

21. The illumination system according to claim 20, wherein the data input of the module groups is an RS-485 interface.

22. The illumination system according to claim 18, wherein each module group further comprises:

a color point table comprising a set of records with information related to driving the illumination sources to produce a predefined set of color points.

23. The illumination system according to claim 22, wherein the information related to driving comprises information about adjusting duty cycles of a power signal sent by the power supply to the illumination sources.

24. The illumination system according to claim 22, wherein each module group further comprises:

a scene table comprising a set of records that relate scenes to color points;

an algorithm running on the module group controller that receives scene information provided directly or indirectly from the system controller, obtains a related color point from the scene table, and drives, in combination with the power supply, the illumination sources so they are at the related color point.

25. The illumination system according to claim 24, wherein each module group further comprises:

calibration data tables obtained from a prior calibration process; and

algorithms for adjusting driving the power supply based on calibration data within the data tables. compensating the driving of the illumination sources based on illumination source calibration data.

26. The illumination system according to claim 24, wherein the scene table comprises:

a first section for storing end-user non-alterable pre-programmed scenes; and

a second section for storing end-user alterable reprogrammable scenes.

27. The illumination system according to claim 24, wherein a user-alterable portion of the scene table is editable by an algorithm in the system controller for assigning color points to scenes and accessible via an attendant control panel attached to the system controller.

28. The illumination system according to claim 18, wherein a module group, upon power up, waits a predefined period of time to receive a scene message, and then displays a default color and intensity if no scene message was received during the predefined period of time.
