Abstract

The invention is compositions and methods for treating lung diseases and conditions using mesenchymal stem cells. The preferred stem cells are those derived from a human umbilical cord, or from bone marrow.

12. A method for treating a lung condition comprising the steps of administering a composition comprising:

a regenerative mesenchymal stem cell threshold of human mesenchymal stem cells derived from bone marrow or from umbilical cord blood;

a surfactant;

a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier;

one or more stem cell metabolites; and

one or more bioactive factors

to a patient in need thereof; and

contacting one or more lung cells with said composition.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the lung condition is selected from the group consisting of BPD, emphysema, and alveolar damage.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the patient is a premature newborn.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein administering comprises a method of administration selected from the group consisting of intratracheal, aerosol, and nebulized.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of wetting agents, surface tension depressants, detergents, dispersing agents, and emulsifiers.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of surfactant protein A, surfactant protein B, surfactant protein C, surfactant protein D, mixtures and combinations thereof.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is selected from the group consisting of phosphate buffer solution (PBS), albumin, sterile saline solution, and perfluorocarbone.

19. The method of claim 12, wherein the bioactive factor is a member of the TGF-beta superfamily.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein the bioactive factor is selected from the group consisting of BMP-2, BMP-3, BMP-4, BMP-6 and BMP-7.
