Abstract

A patient support surface including a cover defining an interior region, a layer of three dimensional material, located at the interior region, and an air circulation device disposed adjacent the layer of three dimensional material. The patient support surface includes at least one of a percussion device and a vibration device, located at the interior region.

Claims

1. A patient support surface having a head end and a foot end, comprising:

a cover defining an enclosed interior region, the enclosed interior region comprising;

a support layer, and

at least one elevation device comprising at least one inflatable compartment having a first portion, a second portion spaced from the first portion, and an airflow barrier defined in the compartment and located approximately half way between the first and second portions, the air flow barrier being arranged to permit one of the first and second portions to be inflated while the other of the first and second portions is at least partially deflated to provide angular elevation of the compartment relative to the horizontal, and to permit the first and second portions to be inflated at substantially the same time to provide vertical elevation.

2. The patient support surface of claim 1, wherein the at least one elevation device is inflatable to provide an elevation of up to about thirty degrees relative to the horizontal.

The patient support surface of claim 1, wherein the at least one elevation device comprises a first hinge point adjacent the first portion, a second hinge point adjacent the second portion and spaced from the first portion, and the at least one compartment is inflatable to provide angular elevation with either the first hinge point or the second hinge point as the vertex.

The patient support surface of claim 1, wherein the support layer comprises at least one inflatable bladder located underneath the first portion of the elevation device, and the at least one inflatable bladder is selectively deflatable while the second portion of the elevation device is inflated to provide angular elevation of greater than thirty degrees relative to the horizontal.

5. The patient support surface of claim 1, comprising a measuring device configured to measure the degree of elevation provided by the elevation device.

6. The patient support surface of claim 1, comprising at least one of a percussion device and a vibration device.

7. A control unit for a patient support surface, the control unit comprising:

a housing defining an enclosed interior region,

a first coupler supported by the housing and configured to operably couple the control unit to an airway clearance system, and

a second coupler supported by the housing and spaced from the first coupler, the second coupler being configured to operably couple the control unit to an enclosed interior region of the patient support surface.

8. The control unit of claim 7, wherein the airway clearance system includes a high frequency chest wall oscillation device.

9. The control unit of claim 7, wherein the airway clearance system is wearable by a person when the person is not supported by the patient support surface.

10. The control unit of claim 7, comprising a user interface coupled to the housing by a swivel connector.

11. The control unit of claim 7, comprising a user interface supported by the housing, wherein the user interface is configured to display information relating to the airway clearance system and information relating to the patient support surface.

12. The control unit of claim 7, comprising a holder supported by the housing, wherein the holder is configured to support a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) device.

13. The control unit of claim 7, comprising a user interface supported by the housing, wherein the user interface is configured to display information relating to a pressure relief feature of the patient support surface and settings for a chest wall oscillation device.

14. The control unit of claim 7, comprising a user interface supported by the housing, wherein the user interface supports user controls for the airway clearance system.

15. A control unit for a patient support surface, comprising:

a housing defining an enclosed interior region, and

a user interface supported by the housing and configured to selectively activate at least one of a pressure relief mode, a rotation mode, a percussion mode, and a vibration mode of the patient support surface and an airway clearance system mode for an airway clearance system.

16. The control unit of claim 15, wherein the user interface is configured to display an airway clearance screen if the airway clearance mode is selected.

17. The control unit of claim 16, wherein the airway clearance screen comprises user controls for selecting pulse frequency, intensity and time duration parameters for airway clearance therapy.

18. The control unit of claim 15, wherein the user interface comprises a user control to configure an alert relating to airway clearance therapy.

19. The control unit of claim 15, configured to activate airway clearance therapy, monitor airway clearance therapy and generate an alarm relating to airway clearance therapy if an amount of time has elapsed since the last airway clearance therapy.

20. The control unit of claim 15, wherein the user interface is configured to display a history of airway clearance therapy.
