Abstract

Example methods and apparatus to allocate resources and detect allocated resources in wireless communications are disclosed. A disclosed example method involves receiving a first radio block in a first radio block period and detecting an uplink allocation indicator contained in the first radio block. The uplink allocation indicator does not allocate any uplink radio block in a second radio block period following immediately after the first radio block period. The example method also involves transmitting a second radio block based on the uplink allocation indicator during a third radio block period separated from the first radio block period by at least one radio block period.

Claims

1. A method to detect allocated resources at a mobile station, comprising:

receiving a first radio block in a first radio block period;

detecting an uplink allocation indicator contained in the first radio block, wherein the uplink allocation indicator does not allocate any uplink radio block in a second radio block period following immediately after the first radio block period; and

transmitting a second radio block based on the uplink allocation indicator during a third radio block period separated from the first radio block period by at least one radio block period.

2. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein each of the first and second radio block periods comprises four time division multiple access (TDMA) frames.

3. A method as defined in claim 1 further comprising:

receiving an offset value; and

determining that the third radio block period is separated from the first radio block period by a quantity of radio block periods equal to the offset value.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the uplink allocation indicator is an uplink state flag.

5. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the at least one radio block period is not assigned to the mobile station for transmission by the mobile station.

6. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the first radio block is received from at least one of a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network or an Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) network.

7. A method as defined in claim 1 further comprising, prior to receiving the first radio block in the first radio block period, sending capabilities to a network indicative of resource allocation types compatible with the mobile station.

8. An apparatus to detect allocated resources at a mobile station, comprising:

a processor configured to;

receive a first radio block in a first radio block period;

detect an uplink allocation indicator contained in the first radio block,

wherein the uplink allocation indicator does not allocate any uplink radio block in a second radio block period following immediately after the first radio block period; and

transmit a second radio block based on the uplink allocation indicator during a third radio block period separated from the first radio block period by at least one radio block period.

9. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein each of the first and second radio block periods comprises four time division multiple access (TDMA) frames.

10. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the processor is configured to:

receive an offset value; and

determine that the third radio block period is separated from the first radio block period by a quantity of radio block periods equal to the offset value.

11. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the uplink allocation indicator is an uplink state flag.

12. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the at least one radio block period is not assigned to the mobile station for transmission by the mobile station.

13. An apparatus as defined in claim 8, wherein the processor is configured to receive the first radio block from at least one of a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network or an Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) network.

14. A network device to allocate resources to a mobile station, comprising:

a processor configured to;

transmit a first radio block in a first radio block period,

wherein the first radio block includes an uplink allocation indicator

allocating an uplink radio block to the mobile station, and

wherein the uplink allocation indicator does not allocate any uplink radio block in a second radio block period following immediately after the first radio block period to the mobile station.

15. A network device as defined in claim 14, wherein each of the first and second radio block periods comprises four time division multiple access (TDMA) frames.

16. A network device as defined in claim 14, wherein the processor is configured to send an offset value indicative of a third radio block period that is separated from the first radio block period by a quantity of radio block periods equal to the offset value, wherein the uplink radio block is located in the third radio block period.

17. A network device as defined in claim 14, wherein the uplink allocation indicator is an uplink state flag.

18. A network device as defined in claim 14, wherein the uplink allocation indicator is associated with a first offset value equal to a first quantity of radio block periods for a first mobile station and is associated with a second offset value equal to a second quantity of radio block periods for a second mobile station.

19. A network device as defined in claim 14, wherein the processor operates in at least one of a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network or an Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) network.
