Abstract

A high-powered light emitting diode (LED) photobiology (phototherapy) device is disclosed in the accompanying specification. The contemplated photobiology (phototherapy) device may be used in the treatment of various aesthetic and medical or other conditions. The phototherapy device may include a number of select LEDs for emitting a desired range or ranges of wavelengths of high intensity light for use in treatment. Additionally, the phototherapy treatment includes one or more methods for providing a treatment appropriate to the condition desired to be treated. The phototherapy device provides for a variety of high power light settings, intensity levels, and selectable time intervals for providing treatment.

Claims

1. A portable high-powered light emitting diode photobiology device for use in human and/or animal phototherapy applications and treatments of biological tissues, said device comprising:

a plurality of light emitting diodes;

a plurality of optics, each optic associated with one of said light emitting diodes;

a user control area providing indicators and switches by which a user may select and confirm desired treatment parameters;

a housing substantially enclosing and retaining said light emitting diodes, optics and user control area;

an optical face substantially integrated with said housing to provide a smooth surface toward the area of treatment.

2. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein said plurality of light emitting diodes comprises red diodes, near infrared diodes and amber diodes each having a rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive.

3. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light emitting diodes comprises a amber diode emitting light at 590 nm with a rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive.

4. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light emitting diodes comprises a red diode emitting light at 660 nm with a rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive.

5. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light emitting diodes comprises a near infrared diode emitting light at 850 nm with a rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive.

6. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light emitting diodes comprises a blue diode emitting light at 415 nm with a rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive.

7. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein at least one of said plurality of light emitting diodes comprises a green diode emitting light at 525 nm with a rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive.

8. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein said optics include a diffuser for improving uniform dispersion of light.

9. The portable photobiology device of claim 8, wherein said diffuser is adjacent or integral with said optical face.

The portable photobiology device of claim 1, wherein said user control area further comprises indicators to provide a user with device and control status, a power switch, a timer switch, an OK switch for confirmation of settings, first and second switches for selecting of desired light source, and a plurality of indicator lights.

11. The portable photobiology device of claim 1, further comprising a rechargeable battery and battery charger to enable cordless use.

12. A photobiology method for treating wounds and bruised tissue, comprising:

providing at least one high-powered light emitting diode having an emitted light frequency of 660 nm and a power output rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive;

providing a diffuser for diffusing and evening light emitted from said at least one high-powered light emitting diode;

positioning said diffuser parallel to and within four inches of the area to be treated; and

exposing the area to be treated to said light emitted for a period of time from 30 seconds to five minutes daily.

13. A photobiology method for treating pain and muscle strain, comprising:

providing at least one of a first high-powered light emitting diode having an emitted light frequency of 660 nm and a second high-powered light emitting diode having an emitted light frequency of 850 nm, each having a power output rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive;

providing a diffuser for diffusing and evening light emitted from said at least one of said first and second high-powered light emitting diode;

positioning said diffuser parallel to and within four inches of the area to be treated; and

exposing the area to be treated to said light emitted for a period of time from one to six minutes a day.

14. A photobiology method for facial toning and rejuvenation, comprising;

providing at least one high-powered light emitting diode having an emitted light frequency of 590 nm and a power output rating of between 1 and 10 watts, inclusive;

providing a diffuser for diffusing and evening light emitted from said at least one high-powered light emitting diode;

positioning said diffuser parallel to and within four inches of the area to be treated; and

exposing the area to be treated to said light emitted for a period of time from one to five minutes per session.
