Abstract

A method and an apparatus for sending a signal on a contentious feedback channel for a downlink shared service and for estimating a number of wireless transmit/receive units (WTRUs) are disclosed. When a transmission criterion associated with a physical random access feedback channel (P-RAFCH) is satisfied, a physical resource is randomly selected among a plurality of physical resources assigned for the P-RAFCH and a pre-configured signal is sent using the selected physical resource. A Node-B receives the pre-configured signal from a plurality of WTRUs and calculates a number of the WTRUs based on a number of used physical resources. The transmission criterion is at least one of successful reception of a data packet on a downlink physical channel, successful reception of a data block on a data service, reception of a signaling command, occurrence of a measurement event, and failure to receive a transmission after a specified number of times.

Claims

1. A long term evolution (LTE) wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) comprising:

circuitry configured to transmit using a physical uplink channel on a condition that at least one of a set of criteria is met;

wherein one of the set of criteria is successful reception of downlink data;

wherein the physical uplink channel is used to send feedback information during transmission time intervals (TTIs) that the WTRU is not allocated resources for transmitting dedicated data to a wireless network;

wherein the circuitry is further configured to transmit acknowledgement feedback information on a first frequency resource associated with the physical uplink channel and to transmit channel quality indicator (CQI) feedback on a second frequency resource associated with the physical uplink channel;

wherein the first and second frequency resources are different;

wherein the physical uplink channel utilizes a reserved plurality of subcarriers.

2. The LTE WTRU of claim 1 wherein the first frequency resource and the second frequency resource are different subcarriers.

3. The LTE WTRU of claim 1 wherein the acknowledgement feedback information is a NACK.

4. The LTE WTRU of claim 1 wherein the circuitry is further configured to transmit feedback information on the physical uplink channel using on-off keying.

5. The LTE WTRU of claim 1 wherein the circuitry is further configured to utilize a threshold to determine a number of streams to report channel quality indicator information.

6. The LTE WTRU of claim 1 wherein the circuitry is further configured to receive power commands on a downlink control channel and to set a transmission power level for the physical uplink channel in response to the received power commands.

7. The LTE WTRU of claim 1 wherein the circuitry is further configured to not utilize a power ramp-up mechanism to transmit using the physical uplink channel.

8. The LTE WTRU of claim 7 wherein the circuitry is further configured to receive in a system information block (SIB) an offset value from the wireless network and transmit using the physical uplink channel at a transmission power level based on the offset value.

9. The LTE WTRU of claim 1 wherein the circuitry is further configured to not receive an acknowledgement in response to feedback information transmitted using the physical uplink channel.

10. A method comprising:

transmitting by a long term evolution (LTE) wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) feedback information on a physical uplink channel on a condition that at least one of a set of criteria is met;

wherein one of the set of criteria is successful reception of downlink data;

wherein the physical uplink channel is used to send feedback information during transmission time intervals (TTIs) that the WTRU is not allocated resources for transmitting dedicated data to a wireless network;

wherein acknowledgement feedback information is transmitted on a first frequency resource associated with the physical uplink channel and channel quality indicator feedback is transmitted on a second frequency resource associated with the physical uplink channel;

wherein the first and second frequency resources are different;

wherein the physical uplink channel utilizes a reserved plurality of subcarriers.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the first frequency resource and the second frequency resource are different subcarriers.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the acknowledgement feedback information is a NACK.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein transmitting feedback information on the physical uplink channel uses at least on-off keying.

14. The method of claim 10 further comprising determining a number of streams to report channel quality indicator information using a threshold.

15. The method of claim 10 further comprising receiving by the WTRU power commands on a downlink control channel and setting by the WTRU a transmission power level for the physical uplink channel in response to the received power commands.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein the WTRU does not utilize a power ramp-up mechanism to transmit using the physical uplink channel.

17. The method of claim 16 further comprising receiving by the WTRU an offset value from the wireless network and transmitting by the WTRU using the physical uplink channel at a transmission power level based on the offset value.

18. The method of claim 10 wherein the WTRU does not receive an acknowledgement in response to the feedback information transmitted using the physical uplink channel.

19. A long term evolution (LTE) wireless network node comprising:

circuitry configured to transmit a system information block (SIB) including information associated with a physical uplink channel;

wherein the physical uplink channel utilizes a reserved plurality of subcarriers;

wherein the physical uplink channel for use by a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) to send feedback information during transmission time intervals (TTIs) that the WTRU is not allocated resources for transmitting dedicated data to the wireless network node;

wherein the circuitry is further configured to receive acknowledgement feedback information from the WTRU on a first frequency resource associated with the physical uplink channel and to receive channel quality indicator feedback from the WTRU on a second frequency resource associated with the physical uplink channel;

wherein the first and second frequency resources are different.

20. The LTE wireless network node of claim 19 wherein the first frequency resource and the second frequency resource are different subcarriers.
