Abstract

The invention is a computer-implemented method and apparatus that delivers information to a prescriber that is prescribing medication via an electronic prescription system, the information is delivered at the time of entering the prescription and prior to completion of entering the prescription information. The information delivered is responsive to information about the prescriber, the patient, and/or other relevant conditions from any or all of a number of sources. The information delivered to the prescriber may include drug interaction information, warnings, legally required statements, potential alternative medications, advertisements, coupons, etc. The data to which the specific information delivered to the prescriber is responsive may include prescriber information, such as the location, age, gender, medical specialty, practice size, geographic location etc, information about the patient, such as age, gender, insurance information, location, previous medical history, height, weight, etc. The data also may include information not specific to the prescriber or patient per se, such as local or national laws, current local weather, local allergen counts, etc. The data may be collected from various sources, including the prescriber'"'"'s medical records database, insurance carrier databases, public information available over the internet or from other sources, purchased information such as subscription lists, weather, pollution, and allergy information, etc.

Claims

12-1. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

selecting a second particular message to be transmitted to the patient as a function of the personal data; and

transmitting the second particular message to the patient.

14. A computer program product embodied on computer readable media readable by a computing device for transmitting a customized message to a prescriber responsive to entry of prescription information into an electronic prescription system, the product comprising:

first computer readable program code for receiving from a prescriber'"'"'s client device via a communication network an electronic prescription, the electronic prescription information including at least a patient identity and the prescriber'"'"'s identity;

second computer readable program code for parsing the electronic prescription information to extract at least one of the patient identity and the prescriber identity;

third computer readable program code for querying at least one electronic database with at least one of the patient identity and the prescriber identity for personal data about at least one of the patient and the prescriber;

fourth computer readable program code for selecting a particular message to be transmitted to the prescriber'"'"'s client device as a function of the personal data; and

fifth computer readable program code for transmitting the particular message to the client device via the communication network.

15. The computer program product of claim 14 further comprising:

sixth computer readable program code for determining from the electronic prescription information received from the client device the software and hardware platforms of the client device; and

seventh computer readable program code for selecting a format of the particular message as a function of the determined software and hardware platforms of the client device.

16. The computer program product of claim 14 further comprising:

eighth computer readable program code for generating an electronic prescription responsive to the electronic prescription information;

wherein the fifth computer readable program code transmits the particular message to the client device prior to the generation of the electronic prescription.

17. The computer program product of claim 14 further comprising:

ninth computer readable program code for extracting the prescriber personal information and the patient personal information from practice management systems of prescribers.

18. The computer program product of claim 17 further comprising:

tenth computer readable program code for storing the prescriber personal information and the patient personal information extracted from the practice management systems of prescribers.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 further comprising:

eleventh computer readable program code for storing a plurality of potential messages for transmitting to prescribers; and

wherein the fourth computer readable program code comprises computer readable code for selecting the particular message from the plurality of stored potential messages.

20. The computer program product of claim 14 wherein the received electronic prescription information further comprises a medication being prescribed and wherein the fourth computer readable code selects the particular message further as a function of the medication being prescribed.
