Abstract

A method and system in accordance with the present invention presents a new packet structure and an improved method for detecting the packet. The method and system comprise adding an additional field to the packet structure to allow for a sufficient time to process a very high throughput (VHT) signal field; and enabling the detection of the VHT signal field of the packet structure. The VHT signal field is distinguishable from other signal fields and the VHT signal field allows for a backward compatibility with other devices.

Claims

1. A method of communicating packets of different formats in a transmitter, the method comprising:

adding an additional field to a packet structure to allow for a sufficient time to process a very high throughput (VHT) signal field; and

enabling the detection of the VHT signal field of the packet structure, wherein the VHT signal field is distinguishable from other signal fields;

wherein, the VHT signal field allows for a backward compatibility with other devices.

2. The method of claim 1 whereby the transmitter transmits at least one signal field symbol and is capable of transmitting a plurality of 802.11 signal fields, the plurality of 802.11 signal fields including the VHT signal field.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the VHT signal field comprises 90 degree rotated binary phase shift keying (BPSK) subcarriers.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the BPSK rotation is on alternating subcarriers.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the additional field comprises an additional short training field.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the additional field includes an additional VHT signal field.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the additional VHT signal field includes additional user specific information.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the additional VHT signal field includes a user MAC address, or similar identifying information that indicates the intended client for an incoming packet.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein the additional VHT signal field includes source address information to allow a particular client to discriminate between packets.

10. A system for communicating packets of different formats in a transmitter, the transmitter comprising a signal field, the system comprising:

means for adding an additional field to a packet structure to allow for a sufficient time to process a very high throughput (VHT) signal field;

means for enabling the detection of a VHT signal field wherein the VHT signal field is distinguishable from other signal fields; and

wherein the VHT signal field allows for a backward compatibility other devices.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the additional field comprises an additional short training field.

12. The system of claim 10 wherein the additional field comprises an additional VHT signal field.

13. The system of claim 12 wherein the additional VHT signal field includes additional user specific information.

14. The system of claim 12 wherein the additional VHT signal field includes a user MAC address, or equivalent identifying information, that indicates the intended client for an incoming packet.

15. The system of claim 12 wherein the additional VHT signal field includes source address information to allow a particular client to discriminate between packets.
