Abstract

A method and system for converting data message formats in a message server is provided. The message server receives a first data message including origin format information from a first user. The message server then sends the first data message including origin format information to a second user. The message server receives a second data message from a second user, the second data message including the origin format. The second data message is converted to the origin format if the first user is unable to receive the second data message. The message server then sends the converted second data message to the first user.

Claims

1. A method for converting data message formats at a message server, comprising:

receiving a first data message including an origin format from a first user;

sending the first data message including the origin format to a second user;

receiving a second data message including the origin format from the second user;

converting the second data message to the origin format if the first user is unable to receive the second data message; and

sending the converted second data message to the first user.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the origin format is stored in a message header of the first data message.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the origin format is stored in a message header of the second data message.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the origin format is stored at the message server.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the origin format is absent from the second message if the second data message cannot be converted to the origin format.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising modifying the origin format.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising converting the first data message to a data format defined by the second user.

8. A data message format conversion system, comprising:

means for receiving a first data message including an origin format from a first user;

means for sending the first data message including the origin format to a second user;

means for receiving a second data message including the origin format from the second user;

converting the second data message to the origin format if the first user is unable to receive the second data message; and

means for sending the converted second data message to the first user.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the origin format is stored in a message header of the first data message.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the origin format is contained in a message header of the second data message.

11. The system of claim 8, wherein the origin format is stored at the message server.

12. The system of claim 8, wherein the origin format is absent from the second message if the second data message cannot be converted to the origin format.

13. The system of claim 8, further comprising means for modifying the origin format.

14. The system of claim 8, further comprising means for converting the first data message to a data format defined by the second user.

15. A computer readable medium storing computer program instructions which, when executed on a processor, define the steps of:

receiving a first data message including an origin format from a first user;

sending the first data message including the origin format to a second user;

receiving a second data message including the origin format from the second user;

converting the second data message to the origin format if the first user is unable to receive the second data message; and

sending the converted second data message to the first user.

16. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the origin format is stored in a message header of the first data message.

17. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the origin format is stored in a message header of the second data message.

18. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the origin format is stored at the message server.

19. The computer readable medium of claim 15, wherein the origin format is absent from the second message if the second data message cannot be converted to the origin format.

20. The computer readable medium of claim 15, further comprising modifying the origin format.
