Abstract

The present invention relates to portable systems and devices, and corresponding methods, for detecting bioagents. In particular, the present invention provides systems, devices, and methods that utilize one or more of a sample preparation component, sample analysis component employing broad range primers, and sample detection component.

Claims

1. A portable system or device comprising:

a) a first chamber configured for isolation of nucleic acid molecule from a sample;

b) a second chamber configured for analysis of isolated nucleic acid, the first and second chambers in liquid communication with one another;

c) a third chamber configured for receiving a removable reagent cartridge, said third chamber in liquid communication with each of said first and second chambers;

d) a user interface for receiving processing instruction from a user;

e) a display; and

f) a processor configured to display an identity of a bioagent on said display.

2. The system or device of claim 1, further comprising a reagent cartridge in said third chamber.

3. The system or device of claim 2, wherein said reagent cartridge comprises broad range primers.

4. The system or device of claim 2, wherein said reagent cartridge comprises reagents for nucleic acid amplification.

5. The system or device of claim 2, wherein said reagent cartridge comprises reagents for nucleic acid sequencing.

6. The system or device of claim 1, wherein said first chamber comprises a SCODA gel.

7. The system or device of claim 1, wherein said device is configured to generate an electric field for SCODA separation of nucleic acid molecules.

8. The system or device of claim 1, further comprising a database of target nucleic acid sequences or base compositions for identifying an unknown target nucleic acid processed by said system or device.

9. The system or device of claim 1, further comprising a fourth chamber configured to detect nucleic acid, wherein said fourth chamber is in fluid communication with said second chamber.

10. A method for detecting a target nucleic acid comprising:

a) providing the system or device of claim 1;

b) introducing a reagent cartridge into said third chamber;

b) introducing a sample into said first chamber;

c) purifying nucleic acid in said first chamber;

d) transferring purified nucleic acid to said second chamber;

e) analyzing nucleic acid in said second chamber; and

f) detecting the presence or absence or identity of said target nucleic acid; and

g) displaying the presence or absence or identity of said target nucleic acid.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said sample is a biological sample.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein said sample is an environmental sample.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein said target nucleic acid is from an infectious disease organism.

14. A kit comprising a plurality of reagent cartridges configured to occupy said third chamber of said system or device of claim 1.

15. The kit of claim 14, further comprising the system or device of claim 1.
