Abstract

A system for controlled delivery of medical fluids to a patient includes an inlet conduit attached to a source of a medical fluid and an outlet conduit connected to the patient. The inlet and outlet conduits are interconnected by a multiple stage control valve assembly and a pair of syringes. The control valve assembly is alternated between a first state wherein the inlet conduit communicates with a first syringe for transmitting fluid from the source to the first syringe, a second state wherein the first syringe communicates with a second syringe and is isolated from the inlet conduit and the outlet for transmitting fluid from the first syringe to the second syringe, and a third state wherein the second syringe communicates with the outlet and is isolated from the inlet and the first syringe for transmitting fluid from the second syringe to the patient through the outlet.

Claims

1. A system for controlled delivery of a medical fluid from a source of such fluid to a patient, said system comprising:

an inlet conduit for being communicably joined to a source of the medical fluid;

an outlet conduit for being communicably joined to the patient;

first and second syringes intermediate said inlet and outlet conduits; and

a control valve assembly interconnecting said inlet, said outlet, and said intermediate first and second syringes, said control valve assembly being alternatable between a first state wherein said inlet conduit communicates with said first syringe for transmitting fluid from the source to said first syringe, a second state wherein said first syringe communicates with said second syringe and is isolated from said inlet and outlet conduits for transmitting fluid from said first syringe to said second syringe, and a third state wherein said second syringe communicates with said outlet conduit and is isolated from said inlet conduit and said first syringe for transmitting fluid from said second syringe to said outlet conduit.

The system of claim 1 in which said control valve assembly includes a valve body having aligned inlet and outlet ports that are communicably connectable to said inlet and said outlet conduits respectively, said valve body further including a pair of first and second intermediate ports that extend axially transversely to said inlet and outlet ports and axially transversely to each other, said control valve assembly further including a stopcock element mounted rotatably within said body and including a channel that is selectively alignable with one adjacent pairs of ports from the group consisting of said inlet and first intermediate ports, said first and second intermediate ports and said second intermediate and outlet ports to permit fluid communication between said adjacent pair of ports, each of said first and second intermediate ports being connectable to a respective said syringe.

3. The system of claim 2 in which said channel includes a pair of communicating channel segments that extend axially and at an acute angle to one another.

The system of claim 3 in which, in said first state, said channel segments communicably interconnect said inlet port and said first intermediate port whereby fluid introduced in said inlet conduit is transmitted through said inlet port, said channel and said first intermediate port to said first syringe.

The system of claim 3 in which, in said second state, said stopcock element aligns said channel segments with said first and second intermediate ports respectively to isolate fluid in said first syringe from both said inlet and outlet conduits and for directing fluid from said first syringe through said first intermediate port, said channel and said second intermediate port into said second syringe.

The system of claim 3 in which, in said third state, said stopcock element aligns said channel segments with said second port and said outlet port, respectively to isolate the fluid in said second syringe from said source, said inlet port and said first intermediate port and for transmitting the fluid through said second intermediate port, said channel and said outlet port to said outlet conduit.

7. The system of claim 2 in which said inlet and outlet ports include respective longitudinal axes that are aligned.

8. The system of claim 2 in which said first and second intermediate ports include respective longitudinal axes that form an angle of substantially 60 degrees with one another.

9. The system of claim 2 in which said first intermediate port forms an axial angle of substantially 60 degrees with the longitudinal axes as of said inlet port and wherein the longitudinal axis of said second intermediate port forms an angle of substantially 60 degrees with the longitudinal axis of said outlet port.

10. The system of claim 3 in which said channel segments have respective longitudinal axes that form an angle of substantially 60 degrees.

The system of claim 1 further including a first one-way valve for restricting fluid flow to a single direction from the source of fluid to said control valve assembly and a second one-way valve for restricting the flow of fluid in a single direction from the control valve assembly through the outlet conduit to the patient.

12. The system of claim 1 further including a downstream valve connected to said outlet conduit for at least one of bleeding fluid from said system and administering an additive fluid to the medical fluid transmitted through said outlet conduit.

The system of claim 1 in which said control valve assembly includes a distinct pair of interconnected first and second control valves for respectively interconnecting to said first and second syringes and for respectively interconnecting said first syringe to the fluid source and the second syringe to the patient.

The system of claim 13 in which each of said valves includes three selectively interconnected ports, said first valve having a first port communicably connected to said inlet conduit and a second port communicably connected to said first syringe, said second valve having a first port communicably connected to inlet outlet conduit and a second port communicably connected to said second syringe, said first and second valves having respective third ports that are interconnected to each other.

The system of claim 14 in which each of said valves is a multidirectional valve, said first control valve being selectively operated to deliver fluid from the source to said first syringe and alternatively from said first syringe to said third port of said second control valve, said second control valve being selectively operated to deliver fluid from said first valve to the second syringe and alternatively from said second syringe to the patient through said outlet conduit.

16. The system of claim 2 in which said stopcock element is rotated by an attached lever having a pair of diverging handles that are alignable with respective ports of said valve body to indicate that said respective ports are communicatively connected by said channel of said stopcock element.

17. A method for delivering medical fluid from a source of such fluid to a patient in controlled doses, said method including:

providing inlet and outlet conduits connected respectively to a source of medical fluid and a patient;

providing first and second syringes and a control valve assembly, which are interconnected between the inlet and outlet conduits;

operating the control valve assembly to communicably join the fluid source and the first syringe and transmitting medical fluid from the source to the first syringe;

adjusting the control valve assembly to communicably join the first and second syringes while isolating the first syringe from the source of fluid;

operating the first syringe to transmit medical fluid from the first syringe to the second syringe through the control valve assembly;

adjusting the control valve assembly to communicably join the second syringe to the outlet conduit and to isolate the first syringe and the fluid source from the second syringe; and

operating said second syringe to transmit medical fluid from said second syringe to the patient through the outlet conduit.

19. A valve assembly for controlling transmission of a fluid therethrough, said valve assembly comprising:

a valve body including first, second, third and fourth fluid transmitting ports; and

a stopcock element mounted movably in said valve body, said stopcock element having a fluid transmitting channel extending therethrough, said channel being configured to permit said stopcock element to be moved alternatably in said valve body between a first state wherein said channel communicatively interconnects said first port with said second port and said stopcock element isolates said first port from said third and fourth ports for transmitting fluid from said first port to said second port, a second state wherein said channel communicatively interconnects said second port with said third port and said stopcock isolates said second port from first and fourth ports for transmitting fluid from said second port to said third port, and a third state wherein said channel communicatively interconnects said third port with said fourth port and said stopcock element isolates said third port from said first and second ports for transmitting fluid from third port to said fourth port.

20. The assembly of claim 19 in which said channel includes a pair of channel segments that are axially and communicably joined at an acute angle to one another.

21. The assembly of claim 19 in which said first and said fourth ports respectively comprise inlet and outlet ports that include respective longitudinal axes that are aligned with each other.

22. The assembly of claim 21 in which said second port comprises a first intermediate port disposed between said inlet and outlet ports and said third port comprises a second intermediate port disposed between said first intermediate port and said outlet port.

23. The assembly of claim 22 in which said first and second intermediate ports include respective longitudinal axes that form an angle of substantially 60°

to one another.

24. The assembly of claim 23 in which a longitudinal axis of said first intermediate port forms an angle of substantially 60°

with a longitudinal axis of said inlet port and a longitudinal axis of said third port forms an angle of substantially 60°

with the longitudinal axis of said fourth port.

25. The assembly of claim 20 in which said channel segments have respective longitudinal axes that form an angle of substantially 60°

26. The assembly of claim 19 in which said stopcock element is rotatably movable in said valve body.

27. The assembly of claim 26 in which said stopcock element is rotatable by an attached lever having a pair of diverging handles that are respectively aligned with said channel segments.

28. The assembly of claim 24 in which said channel includes a pair of channel segments that are communicably joined at an axial angle of substantially 60°

to one another, said inlet and first intermediate ports, said first and second intermediate ports and said second intermediate and outlet ports defining respective adjacent pairs of ports, each said adjacent pair of ports being communicably connected to said pair of channel segments in a respective one of said first, second and third states.
