Abstract

A system and method of conference messaging between Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) telephony devices and Wide Area Network (WAN) devices is where a conference messaging session with WAN devices is initiated by at least one Telephony Control Point (TCP) via a session request which includes session information, media capabilities of at least one TCP, a list of WAN devices, and a subject of the conference messaging session. The conference messaging session is then established between the at least one TCP and the WAN devices by a Telephony Server (TS) in an UPnP telephony based home network based on the session request.

Claims

1. A method of conference messaging between at least one Telephony Control Point (TCP) of a Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) telephony based home network and a plurality of a Wide Area Network (WAN) devices, comprising:

initiating a conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices by at least one TCP via a session request; and

establishing the conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices by a Telephony Server (TS) in the UPnP telephony based home network based on the session request.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the session request includes session information, media capabilities of the at least one TCP, a list of WAN devices, and a subject of the conference messaging session.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein initiating the conference messaging session comprises:

generating a session request associated with the conference messaging session; and

forwarding the session request to the TS.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein establishing the conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices by the TS comprises:

initiating the conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices based on the session request via the WAN; and

enabling the conference messaging between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices based on the media capabilities of the at least one TCP.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein initiating the conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices based on the session request comprises:

receiving the session request from the at least one TCP;

retrieving a list of WAN devices, media capabilities of the at least one TCP, and session information from the received session request;

determining whether the session request is associated with a conference messaging session based on the session information;

if so, forwarding a conference initiate request to each of the plurality of WAN devices in the session request; and

if not, terminating the session with the at least one TCP.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein forwarding the conference initiate request to each of the plurality of WAN devices in the session request comprises:

generating the conference initiate request for establishing the conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices, wherein the conference initiate request includes a unique conference session identifier, media capabilities, session subject and the like; and

sending the generated conference initiate request to each of the plurality of WAN devices in the session request.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein sending the generated conference initiate request comprises:

receiving a confirmation message in response to the conference initiate request from the plurality of WAN devices; and

processing and forwarding the confirmation associated with successful initiation of the conference messaging session to the at least one TCP based on the media capabilities.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein enabling the conference messaging between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices based on the media capabilities comprises:

enabling exchange of a plurality of instant messages between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices during the conference messaging session based on the media capabilities of the at least one TCP.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein enabling the conference messaging between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices based on the media capabilities further comprises:

receiving one or more instant messages from the plurality of WAN devices by the TS during the conference messaging session; and

processing and forwarding the one or more instant messages by the TS based on the media capabilities of the at least one TCP during the conference messaging session such that the one or more instant messages are displayed on a display of the TCP in a compatible format.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating a modify session request by the at least one TCP during the ongoing conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices, wherein the modify session request includes subject information, media capabilities, at least one WAN device to be added/removed into/from the conference messaging session;

retrieving information from the modify session request received from the TCP by the TS;

communicating the modify session information to the plurality of WAN devices;

adding or removing at least one WAN device from the ongoing conference messaging session based on the modify session request; and

notifying the at least one TCP and other active WAN devices of the conference messaging session regarding the addition and removal of the at least one WAN device.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating a transfer session request by the at least one TCP during the ongoing conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices;

retrieving session identifier information from the transfer session request received from the at least one TCP by the TS; and

marking an ongoing conference messaging session status as parked; and

notifying the ongoing conference messaging session status to associated one or more TCPs and the plurality of WAN devices connected to the TS.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

receiving a resume conference messaging session request from one of the associated one or more TCPs; and

resuming the ongoing conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices by the TS based on the resume conference messaging session request received from said one of the TCPs, wherein the status of session is changed to running upon resuming the ongoing conference messaging session.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating a join session request by at least one TCP;

retrieving session identifier information from the join session request received from the at least one TCP by the TS;

determining whether the retrieved session identifier matches with an session identifier in a session identifier list;

if so, allowing the at least one TCP to join the conference messaging session based on the join session request;

if not, then determining whether the TS is connected to the WAN;

if so, allowing the at least one TCP to join the conference messaging session based on the join session request; and

if not, terminating the join session request received from the at least one TCP.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein enabling conference messaging between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices comprises:

providing dynamic session information associated with the ongoing conference messaging information to the at least one TCP, wherein the dynamic information includes user leaving session information, user joining session information, and any changes in the subject of conference session.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising updating information associated with the conference messaging session by the at least one TCP or one of the WAN devices when the conference messaging is ongoing.

27. The system of claim 15, further comprising a telephony client device (TC) connected to the TS for media related handling and providing input and output of the TCP during the conference messaging session.

16. A Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) telephony based home network system comprising:

at least one Telephony Control Point (TCP) for initiating a conference messaging session with a plurality of Wide Area Network (WAN) devices via a session request; and

a Telephony Server (TS) connected to the TCP for establishing the conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices based on the session request.

17. The system of claim 16, wherein the session request includes session information, media capabilities of the at least one TCP, a list of WAN devices, and a session subject.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the at least one TCP initiates the conference messaging session by generating a session request associated with the conference messaging session, and forwarding the session request to the TS.

The system of claim 18, wherein the TS establishes the conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices by initiating the conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices based on the session request via the WAN, and enabling conference messaging between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices based on the media capabilities of the at least one TCP.

The system of claim 19, wherein the TS initiates the conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices by retrieving a list of WAN devices, media capabilities of the at least one TCP, and session information from the session request, determining whether the session request is associated with a conference messaging session based on the session information, and forwarding a conference initiate request to each of the plurality of WAN devices in the session request based on the determination.

The system of claim 20, wherein the TS forwards a conference initiate request to each of the plurality of WAN devices in the session request by generating the conference initiate request for establishing the conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices, wherein the conference initiate request includes a unique conference session identifier, media capabilities of the at least one TCP, a session subject and the like, and by sending the generated conference initiate request to each of the plurality of WAN devices in the session request.

The system of claim 21, wherein the TS enables conference messaging between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices by processing and forwarding one or more instant messages based on the media capabilities of the at least one TCP during the conference messaging session such that the one or more instant messages are displayed on a display of the at least one TCP in a compatible format.

23. The system of claim 16, wherein the TS adds or removes WAN devices from the conference messaging session during the ongoing conference messaging session upon receiving a modify session request from the at least one TCP.

24. The system of claim 16, wherein the TS enables transfer of the ongoing conference messaging session from one TCP to another TCP.

25. The system of claim 18, wherein the TS enables the at least one TCP to join ongoing conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices.

26. The system of claim 16, wherein the TS provides dynamic session information associated with the ongoing conference messaging session to the at least one TCP upon occurrence of an event.

28. The system of claim 16, further comprising a telephony client device (TC) connected to the TS for media related handling and providing input and output of the TCP during the conference messaging session.

29. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having instructions, that when executed by at least one of Telephony Control Point (TCP) and Telephony Server (TS), causes the Telephony Control Point (TCP) and the Telephony Server (TS) to perform a method comprising:

initiating a conference messaging session with the plurality of Wide Area Network (WAN) devices by at least one TCP via a session request; and

establishing the conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices by a TS in the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) telephony based home network based on the session request.

30. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the session request includes session information, media capabilities of the at least one TCP, a list of WAN devices, and a subject of the conference messaging session

31. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 30, wherein initiating the conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices comprises:

receiving the session request from the at least one TCP;

retrieving a list of WAN devices, media capabilities of the at least one TCP, and session information from the received session request;

determining whether the session request is associated with a conference messaging session based on the session information;

if so, forwarding a conference initiate request to each of the plurality of WAN devices in the session request; and

if not, terminating the session with the at least one TCP.

32. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the instructions further comprise:

generating a modify session request by the at least one TCP during the ongoing conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices, wherein the modify session request includes subject information, media capabilities, at least one WAN device to be added/removed into/from the conference messaging session;

retrieving information from the modify session request received from the TCP by the TS;

communicating the modify session information to the plurality of WAN devices;

adding or removing at least one WAN device from the ongoing conference messaging session based on the modify session request; and

notifying the at least one TCP and other active WAN devices of the conference messaging session regarding the addition and removal of the at least one WAN device.

33. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the instructions further comprise:

generating a transfer session request by the at least one TCP during the ongoing conference messaging session between the at least one TCP and the plurality of WAN devices;

retrieving session identifier information from the transfer session request received from the at least one TCP by the TS; and

marking an ongoing conference messaging session status as parked; and

notifying the ongoing conference messaging session status to associated one or more TCPs and the plurality of WAN devices connected to the TS.

34. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the instructions further comprise:

receiving a resume conference messaging session request from one of the associated one or more TCPs; and

resuming the ongoing conference messaging session with the plurality of WAN devices by the TS based on the resume conference messaging session request received from said one of the TCPs, wherein the status of session is changed to running upon resuming the ongoing conference messaging session.

35. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the instructions further comprise:

generating a join session request by at least one TCP;

retrieving session identifier information from the join session request received from the at least one TCP by the TS;

determining whether the retrieved session identifier matches with an session identifier in a session identifier list;

if so, allowing the at least one TCP to join the conference messaging session based on the join session request;

if not, then determining whether the TS is connected to the WAN;

if so, allowing the at least one TCP to join the conference messaging session based on the join session request; and

if not, terminating the join session request received from the at least one TCP.

36. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein enabling conference messaging between the at least one TCP and one or more of the plurality of WAN devices comprises:

providing dynamic session information associated with the ongoing conference messaging information to the at least one TCP, wherein the dynamic information includes user leaving session information, user joining session information, and any changes in the subject of conference session.

37. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 29, wherein the instructions further comprise:

updating information associated with the conference messaging session by the at least one TCP or one of the WAN devices when the conference messaging is ongoing.
