Abstract

Embodiments include systems and methods that use video compression techniques when browsing web pages referencing static image data or video content. In non-limiting examples, this can include using modern video compression techniques when browsing web pages referencing compressed static image data to obtain increased efficiency in transmission and/or rendering of the static image data on a browser at a client device. In an embodiment, a system includes a browser that browses a received web page having a content identifier and an associated video compression data signature. The browser includes a decoder that decodes compressed video content associated with the content identifier in accordance with a type of video compression identified by the video compression data signature to obtain static image data.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a computing device having a browser, a web page having a content identifier, the content identifier having an associated video compression data signature;

identifying the video compression data signature; and

decoding compressed video content associated with the content identifier based on the identified video compression data signature to obtain static image data.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

rendering the obtained static image data for display in a browser window in association with content corresponding to the received web page.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the content identifier and the associated video compression data signature are included in a URL of an image tag in the received web page.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the content identifier is a video content identifier.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the video compression data signature identifies a type of video compression more efficient than a type of static image compression.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the video compression data signature identifies a type of video compression selected from the group of VP8, H264, and VC1 video compression.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the type of static image compression comprises a type of compression selected from the group of JPEG, GIF, and PNG static image compression.

8. The method of claim 1, content identifier is a static content identifier.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

requesting the content from a remote site over a network; and

receiving the compressed video content from the remote site over the network prior to the decoding.

10. The method of claim 2, wherein the recognizing, decoding, and rendering are performed by the browser at the computing device.

11. A method comprising:

receiving, at a first computing device having a browser, a content identifier, the content identifier having an associated video compression data signature;

requesting content associated with the content identifier;

receiving, in response to requesting the content, image content as compressed video content, wherein the compressed video content is a compression of the requested content; and

decoding the received compressed video content based on the video compression data signature to obtain static image data.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

rendering the obtained static image data for display in the browser.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the rendering comprises rendering the obtained static image data in association with content of a web page for display in the browser, wherein the content identifier is received with the web page.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the content identifier and the associated video compression data signature are included in a URL of an HTML image tag.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the video compression data signature identifies a type of video compression.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the compressed video content is more efficiently compressed than the static image data compressed using a static image compression.

17. The method of claim 11, wherein

the compressed video content comprises the image content compressed with a type of video compression selected from the group of VP8, H264, and VC1 video compression, and

the requested content, prior to the video compression, comprises the image content compressed with a type of static image compression selected from the group of JPEG, GIF and PNG static image compression.

18. A system comprising:

a browser, configured to operate on a first computing device and browse a received web page having a content identifier, the content identifier having an associated video compression data signature,

the browser further being configured to request content associated with the content identifier and receive compressed video content that is a video compression of the requested content; and

wherein the browser includes a decoder that decodes the received compressed video content based on the video compression data signature associated with the compressed video content, to obtain static image data.

19. The system of claim 18, wherein the decoder is configured to decode the received compressed video content more efficiently than the requested content compressed using a static image compression, as the requested content was stored prior to the video compression.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the browser is further configured to render the obtained static image data as one of a thumbnail, a photo and an advertisement banner.
