Abstract

A fastener cartridge can comprise a compressible, collapsible, and/or crushable cartridge body and fasteners embedded within the cartridge body which can be utilized to fasten tissue. In use, the fastener cartridge can be positioned in a first jaw of a surgical fastening device, wherein the first jaw can be positioned opposite a second jaw, or anvil. The anvil can be engaged with the fastener cartridge to compress, collapse, and/or crush the cartridge body and deform, or otherwise deploy, the fasteners contained therein. As the fasteners are deformed or deployed, the fasteners can capture at least a portion of the cartridge body therein along with at least a portion of the tissue being fastened. The staple cartridge can further comprise a support retainer. The support retainer can be detachably connected to the cartridge body such that the cartridge body can be implanted and the support retainer can remain with the first jaw.

Claims

1. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a plurality of staples;

a compressible cartridge body, wherein said staples are positioned within said compressible cartridge body; and

a support pan detachably affixed to said compressible cartridge body.

2. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said support pan comprises a plurality of grooves, and wherein said staples are at least partially positioned within said grooves.

3. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said plurality of staples are arranged in a first row of staples and a second row of staples, and wherein said support pan comprises a wall at least partially extending between said first row of staples and said second row of staples.

4. The staple cartridge of claim 3, wherein said staples are embedded within said compressible cartridge body, and wherein said compressible cartridge body comprises a channel, and wherein said support pan wall is positioned within said channel.

5. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said compressible cartridge body comprises a tissue-contacting surface, wherein said tissue-contacting surface comprises a first color, and wherein said support pan comprises a second color which is different than said first color.

6. The staple cartridge of claim 1, wherein said support pan comprises a drive surface configured to be engaged by a firing mechanism of a surgical stapler.

7. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a plurality of fasteners;

a compressible cartridge body, wherein said fasteners are positioned within said compressible cartridge body; and

a support pan releasably attached to said compressible cartridge body.

8. A staple cartridge, comprising:

a plurality of staples;

an implantable cartridge body, wherein said staples are at least partially positioned within said implantable cartridge body;

a pan, wherein said implantable cartridge body is positioned within said pan; and

a plurality of staple drivers positioned between said pan and said staples.

9. The staple cartridge of claim 8, further comprising a sled configured to be slid along said pan, wherein said sled is configured to engage said staple drivers and said implantable cartridge body and eject said staples and said implantable cartridge body from said pan.

10. The staple cartridge of claim 9, wherein said staple drivers are comprised of a bioabsorbable material, and wherein said sled is configured to eject said staple drivers with said implantable cartridge body and said staples.

11. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said implantable cartridge body is comprised of compressible foam.

12. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said implantable cartridge body is comprised of a hemostatic material.

13. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein each said staple comprises a base and a deformable leg extending from said base, wherein said deformable legs are embedded within said implantable cartridge body, and wherein each said staple driver comprises a trough configured to receive a said base of a staple.

14. The staple cartridge of claim 13, wherein said staple drivers are at least partially embedded within said implantable cartridge body.

15. The staple cartridge of claim 13, wherein said staple drivers are attached to said staple bases.

16. The staple cartridge of claim 8, wherein said implantable cartridge body is collapsible.

17. A fastener cartridge, comprising:

a plurality of fasteners;

an implantable cartridge body, wherein said fasteners are at least partially positioned within said implantable cartridge body;

a retainer, wherein said implantable cartridge body is positioned within said retainer; and

a plurality of fastener drivers positioned between said retainer and said fasteners.

18. The fastener cartridge of claim 17, further comprising a sled configured to be slid along said retainer, wherein said sled is configured to engage said fastener drivers and said implantable cartridge body and eject said fasteners and said implantable cartridge body from said pan.

19. The fastener cartridge of claim 18, wherein said fastener drivers are comprised of a bioabsorbable material, and wherein said sled is configured to eject said fastener drivers with said implantable cartridge body and said fasteners.

20. The fastener cartridge of claim 17, wherein said implantable cartridge body is comprised of compressible foam.
