Abstract

Disclosed herein is an optical article having a first optical layer; a second optical layer; and an antistatic layer disposed between the first and second optical layers, the antistatic layer having conducting particles having an aspect ratio greater than about 10. The conducting particles may comprise vanadium oxide particles or carbon nanotubes. The optical article may be a brightness enhancement film, a retro-reflecting film, or a reflective polarizer, and be used in a display device, for example, a liquid crystal display device.

Claims

1. An optical article comprising:

a first optical layer;

a second optical layer; and

an antistatic layer disposed between the first and second optical layers,

the antistatic layer having an average total thickness of about 0.5 nm or less, wherein the antistatic layer comprises vanadium oxide particles having a width of from about 0.02 to about 0.08 μ

m and a length of from about 1.0 to about 4.0 μ

m.

2. The optical article of claim 1, wherein the antistatic layer exhibits a surface resistivity of about 1×

10⁸ ohms/sq or greater.

3. The optical article of claim 1 having a charge decay time of less than about 2 seconds, wherein charge decay time is measured by the time required for static charge of the article to decay to 10% of its initial value.

4. The optical article of claim 1, the first and second optical layers having an adhesion of at least 3 according to ASTM D 3359.

5. The optical article of claim 1, at least one of the first and second optical layers comprising a microstructured surface.

6. The optical article of claim 1, at least one of the first and second optical layers comprising a multilayer optical film, the multilayer optical film comprising alternating layers of at least two different polymeric materials.

7. The optical article of claim 1, the antistatic layer in substantial contact with the first and/or second optical layers.

8. The optical article of claim 1, the antistatic layer consisting essentially of the vanadium oxide particles and a surfactant.

9. The optical article of claim 8, the surfactant comprising a nonionic surfactant.

10. A display device comprising:

a light source;

a display panel; and

the optical article of claim 1 disposed between the light source and the display panel.

11. The display device of claim 10, the display panel comprising a liquid crystal display panel.
