Abstract

An apparatus used in the medical industry such as an Incentive Spirometer, in order to increase transpulmonary pressure and respiratory volumes, to improve inspiratory muscle performance and re-establish the normal pulmonary hyperinflation, through the employment of electronic technology, providing audible, simulated, verbal, human sounding words, that assist, guide and prompt, increasing patient usage. In one embodiment, the Incentive Spirometer uses a capacitive sensing circuit preferably mounted to the side of the apparatus'"'"'s housing for sensing movement of the float within the tube wall and for obtaining a measurement or reading of the patient'"'"'s performance with the Incentive Spirometer.

Claims

1. An Incentive Spirometer assembly, comprising:

an Incentive Spirometer device having a housing, a float member disposed within said housing, the float member moving within the housing based on use of the Incentive Spirometer by a patient;

an electronic assembly attached to the housing of said Incentive Spirometer approximate to said float member without contacting said float member, said electronic assembly sensing movement of said float member within the housing;

a speaker in communication with the electronic assembly; and

a power source in communication with said electronic assembly

wherein said electronic assembly is programmed to automatically prompt a user at a predetermined time period to begin using the Incentive Spirometer by transmitting a verbal prompting voice message to the speaker.

2. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 1 wherein upon use of the Incentive Spirometer by the user the float member moves within said housing and said electronic assembly is programmed to read said float member movement.

3. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 2 wherein said electronic assembly, said speaker and said power source are housed within a cartridge.

4. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 3 wherein said cartridge is externally secured to a side of the housing of said Incentive Spirometer.

5. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 2 wherein said electronic assembly is programmed to convert the float member movement to a measurement value and to verbally indicating to the user the measurement value through the speaker.

6. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 1 wherein said electronic assembly comprising a microcontroller unit and an audio storage unit, said audio storage unit having at least one stored verbal voice message for prompting the user to use the Incentive Spirometer device;

wherein said microcontroller unit is programmed to direct the audio storage unit to automatically send a first verbal voice message to the speaker in order to prompt use of the Incentive Spirometer device by the user.

The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 6 wherein said microcontroller unit continues to automatically direct the audio storage unit to send the first verbal voice message or another verbal voice message to the speaker on a spaced apart continuous basis until said microcontroller unit determines that the user has initiated a sustained maximal inspiration (SMI) procedure utilizing the Incentive Spirometer device.

The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 6 wherein after the user has used the Incentive Spirometer said microcontroller unit is programmed to wait for a predetermined time period before automatically directing said audio storage unit to repeat a prompting procedure of the user by sending the initial verbal prompting voice message to the user for prompting the user to perform another sustained maximal inspiration (SMI) procedure;

wherein the user is automatically encouraged to perform multiple sustained maximal inspiration (SMI) procedures at predetermined intervals utilizing the Incentive Spirometer device during a single day period as therapeutically required.

9. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 6 wherein said microcontroller unit is programmed to not send any verbal messages during predefined time periods or during certain conditions.

10. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 9 wherein the certain conditions is level of darkness or light in a room in which the Incentive Spirometer device is located to provide the user with a sleep period without disturbance from said means for automatically prompting.

11. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 2 wherein said electronic assembly having at least one capacitive sensor and said float member having a conductive material which permits said capacitive sensor to read or otherwise determine movement of said float member based on the movement of the conductive material provided with the float member.

12. The Incentive Spirometer of claim 1 wherein said power source is a rechargeable battery.

The Incentive Spirometer of claim 6 wherein said electronic assembly further comprising a an audio response unit which generates a verbal voice message upon receipt of a signal from said microcontroller unit that is sent to the speaker to verbally indicate to the user a volumetric or flowrate measurement reading from the user'"'"'s use of the Incentive Spirometer.

14. The Incentive Spirometer of claim 13 wherein a verbal functional voice message appropriate for the measurement reading is also sent to the speaker.

15. The Incentive Spirometer of claim 11 wherein said conductive material is a metal coating provided on at least a portion of said float member.

16. An Incentive Spirometer assembly, comprising:

an Incentive Spirometer device having a housing, a float member disposed within said housing, the float member moving within the housing based on use of the Incentive Spirometer by a patient, said float member provided with a conductive material;

an electronic assembly attached to the housing of said Incentive Spirometer approximate to said float member without contacting said float member, said electronic assembly having a microcontroller unit, an audio storage unit, at least one capacitive sensor and an audio response unit;

said audio storage unit having at least one stored verbal voice message for prompting the user to use the Incentive Spirometer device;

a speaker in communication with the electronic assembly; and

a power source in communication with said electronic assembly

wherein said microcontroller unit is programmed to automatically direct the audio storage unit to automatically send a first verbal voice message to the speaker to prompt the user at a predetermined time period to begin using the Incentive Spirometer

wherein movement of said float member within the housing of said Incentive Spirometer is read or sensed by at least one of said at least one capacitive sensors;

wherein said audio response unit generates a verbal voice message upon receipt of a signal from said microcontroller unit that is sent to the speaker to verbally indicate to the user a volumetric or flowrate measurement reading from the user'"'"'s use of the Incentive Spirometer.

17. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 16 wherein said electronic assembly, said speaker and said power source are housed within a cartridge that is externally secured to a side of the housing of said Incentive Spirometer.

18. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 17 wherein said cartridge is permanently secured to the housing of said Incentive Spirometer.

19. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 16 wherein said microcontroller unit continues to automatically direct the audio storage unit to send the first verbal voice message or another verbal voice message to the speaker on a spaced apart continuous basis until said microcontroller unit determines that the user has initiated a sustained maximal inspiration (SMI) procedure utilizing the Incentive Spirometer device.

20. The Incentive Spirometer assembly of claim 16 wherein said microcontroller unit is programmed to not send any verbal messages during predefined time periods or during certain conditions.
